Just do it! Saints! Having said that I love SLX cranks to bits and I very much doubt you'd be disapointed with them performance wise. Buy the ones you like the look of best though. Looking good makes you faster and better by 12.2323234 %. Fact.

Also I know you ride Cwmcarn a lot, what tyres do you use there and how are the DH tracks during the winter? Got an uplift day booked there in December times and hoping to start going there on a fairly regular basis (when workload/money allows me to).
  • Ahh dude, whens your uplift day? Might tag along lol!

I run Minion super tacky front and maxxpro rear. The DH has recently been resurfaced (the red anyway) so its a bit of a mix and not really bedded yet.... generally though, its fairly tight packed. In the wet it gets a bit cut up and grimey, but thats what you'd expect!

I've had saints before, and they are the sexyest things ever. Plus it then means I can justify saint brakes, rear mech and shifters... doesn't it?

The uplift days the 21st december. Can't wait for it.

mmm... Saint parts are very nice. Now cave in to peer pressure and buy them!

Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it!
  • Be a man, do the right thing. Buy saint. Be a man.
  • Canyon will be back in my hands today :D

Having to put the cranks etc on hold, report from Canyon is that the wheels have taken a few knocks and have bent a bit lol.
Will be keeping an eye on them, if they go sour on the next uplift I'm going to upgrade :)

Just need a chain device so I can complete the single ring conversion!
  • Chain device bought..

Can't do the 21st! Thats the day I go back to Northern Land! :(
  • Bash guard turned up for operation single ring.

Means I have 3 now lol, but this RF one should be lighter.

  • lol yeah.

Only thing is i'm not looking forward to filing off my granny ring tabs lol!

I'll need a dual ring setup if we ride Snowdon so I'll deffo have to invest in an SLX crankset for that!

Annoyingly though, my brakes have lost all feel again so will have to be re-bled before I can ride :(

snowdon is more of a push up than a ride up, just get a 34t chainring, if you can't pedal up on that, there's no point having a granny ring.

  • I like it.

    Would save about £50-60 lol!

haha definitely, i find on my xc bike, i can pedal up preeeetty much anything on a 36t ring, whack a 33/34t ring on (175mm cranks would be ideal as well), and providing your suspension is fairly pedal friendly, you should be fairly alright.

Snowdon is on for around March it sounds? Can't think of anything I'd rather do, epic riding with a bunch of bumbders

Can be a semi stag do as well as it will be just before the wedding. Don't want any fuss, just a week away riding will suit me perfectly

people don't believe me when i say the elixir 5s are unreliable
  • I would get new brakes, but I need to save for wheels at the mo just in case :(

Got Elixir R's on the Boardman which have been fine so I'm wondering if I'm just boiling the oil on the big bike...

Jimbo - sounds like a plan fella!!!

formulas? Formula still have the 2009 mega dirt cheap in their store, £170 inc postage for f+r brake inc 203mm rotors and adaptors, HUGE step up from my old avids, i'd definitely recommend them!

This is a serious piece of kit.. I've had a e-13 before, but this just feels so much nicer and looks a lot more purposeful!

Was going to start fitting this tonight but my crank extractor has bloody well seized :( stuck it in the freezer to see if I can get it to undo lol.

  • Single ring conversion almost complete... al I have to do is remove the shifter + cable.

Can't beat a bit of late night fettling... was sawing the granny ring tabs off at about 11pm last night lol.

Final product.. guide positions aren't set up as I haven't got the chain on, but its in the right position.

    Nice one!
Time for new cranks i think if you're still using a crank extractor! lol
Tried to get my SLX's on my new build last night but need to take some more off the granny ring tabs, however all of my (my dad's) tools are 180 miles away back in nottingham... LBS it is!

Done. Very very happy. Starting to take shape as a proper gravity machine now!
(Sorry about the crappy phone pic though)

I actually like the cranks after taking them apart and seeing how they work etc. Very very strong and burly setup! Not surprised they weigh quite a bit! If the bolts start undoing I'll start to consider a swap, but I'm more than happy for now!

I just need to sort my brakes out again now. LBS reckon £8 per brake which is spot on if they can get a good bleed!

EDIT: oh and I never changed the bash in the end so I have 2 going up for sale. I decided after a few trial fittings that the original one looked far far better!
  • fox's sold and just got some new Marzocchi 66 RC3 EVO's for £374... lovely jubbly.

    Just need wheels now!
