The Canyon bikes thread

Thought I should update, the Grand Canyon has had its first big trip, at first it was bumpy as hell I really questioned WTF had I done going from a full sus to a hardtail, then I remembered the tyres still had factory preset air and that was causing the issue, took some air out the tyres and back to smooth running!
The bike itself is awesome as a hardtail, I would say its the best hardtail ive ever had. The bike climbs surprisingly well for a 29er, it goes downhill amazingly quick and the switchbacks at Cannock no issues, in fact I can get round them quicker and with less hassle than the 26er. Im not turning this into a 26v650v29 debate but as a shorty I was told a 29er would be no good for me.
Well the bike is just what I needed, I had a big off about 5 years ago, this bashed my confidence, yes ive done daft things since, nevis red being one of them but ive never looked comfortable on the bike since the big crash. My mates who I was out with on sunday all they could say was the confidence is back, I was hitting lines ive avoided before ive kept the pace and out paced some of the guys who always are steps ahead felt great being out on the bike. Very happy with the canyon, can't recommend one enough!!0 -
Im Trek
Glad to hear you are back on the bike and enjoying it.
I have had a couple of great trips on my spectral already with Wales at the end of this week for Afan, Cwmcarn and BPW. Should be epic and will post some photos when i get back.
My spectral rides so smooth, i went tubeless straight away and changed the saddle and grips and with the XT Trail wide pedals i can't find a fault with it.
Hope everyone gets what they ordered sooner rather than later.MTB Trek 4300 Disc 1999

i'm still waiting!
I emailed last Thursday, received the standard "we will reply in 24 hours" but still waiting! So I tried phoning Canyon UK on Friday but no answer!
I anticipated a delay but would have liked to be told about it! seeing as i spoke to them during week 17 and everything was on track! :roll:0 -

Try tweeting @canyon_bikes. It was the only way I got an answer from them.0 -
I did! I think I may have seen your tweet about yours and your brothers bike?! that gave me the idea to do it!
Had a reply this afternoon saying that CanyonUK would reply to my email ASAP!0 -
My new Nerve AL 7.0
Took delivery 2 weeks ago. 4 week wait.
Must say I am quite impressed with everything so far from Canyon, from ordering - delivery - riding
Really nice bike to ride compared to my old Merida full sus which got stolen from my garage. Well worth the pennies.0 -
Quick question, but do the new Nerve's suffer from the same frame size "issue" as the Spectrals or are they a bit more accurate in their sizing?0
-
Emailed Canyon for an update on my order (delayed from week 13 to week 21) and got a prompt response to say the the order still looks good and is actually showing as dispatching next week. So subject to anymore last minute delays looks as if all good. Fingers crossed.2015 Nukeproof Mega TR 275 in raw0

Recently looking on the Canyon Spectral AL 6.0/7.0.
But I got some sizing issue about it. As all the review said the bike is one size smaller than others, so I have to take some consideration on it.
I'm 165cm tall and 73.5cm inseam only (short legs...).
My last bike was Giant Anthem 27.5 in XS size, which is 555mm TT with 60mm stem, I dunno the reach of the bike. But I felt little cramp to ride in both trail and short tour on pavement road.
Now considering the Canyon Spectral AL. I found the S size should fit for me, as it has 561mm TT with 60mm stem, and around 400mm reach + 580mm stack (long and low).
But the stand over is so high! It mentioned 771mm!! My inseam is just 735mm!
So is this bike is really high in stand-over?? Or is the stand-over measurement the middle of top tube??
The XS size is really so short in TT I believe...
So any suggestion of the size??
Thanks!0 -

Can't disagree with this, any emails were answered that day (canyon uk) or the next day (canyon de).
Phone calls were always answered and very helpful, with good advice and facts.
So far I have been really impressed.was missing a cable clip on my spectral and canyon sent out 4 that day, u can't get any better than that!!!Cube reaction gtc race 2011 26er, Canyon spectral al 8.0 2014, cube reaction gtc race 2015 29er

The stand over is indeed the middle of the top tube. Remember you also have your heal height to add.0 -
Took my spectral to Cwmcarn today.
It was an awsome day, bit wet but not too cold.
We did the new trail and the bike ate it up with no issues.
I have an XL 29er so some of the tight switch backs were tricky and as I'm new to this kind of riding it was a challenge but incredibly fun.MTB Trek 4300 Disc 1999

Got any photos of the bike ? I don't think anyone else has posted any.0 -

Then I guess I would buy S size then!
XS is too small to me.0 -
Thought i'd chip my 2p's worth regarding sizing - having received my medium spectral earlier this week and having waited 21 weeks was very apprehensive to see if the bike was going to be too small mainly down to the WMB review
My PPS:
Body Height 175,0
Shoulder Width 48
Inseam Length 83,0
Torso Length 71,0
Arm Length 61,0
Body Weight 80,00
After sitting on the bike for the first time my initial impression was this is wrong the cockpit is too cramped - a quick ride up the road and was convinced the top tube was too short and that i need a large. I sat down and started comparing the geometry to my current bike a 2012 giant trance and realised that top tube length was very similar and that the 90mm stem on the trance vs 50mm on the spectral could be why it felt so different
Still not convinced i started comparing the geometry of large and medium spectral's and soon realised that a large was not an option as the 40mm increase in seat tube length would not allow me full use of the dropper post - on my medium the reverb is fully down the seat tube apart from 10-15mm.
After quite few cups of tea and adjustment of the cockpit i took a leap of faith this morning and headed up to hamsterley. All i can say is WOW it only took a section or two suddenly everything just feels so right - climbs well and although not pushing it too much on the downs it feels very composed and balanced and i feel very much in the bike .
Early days i know but i've come to the conclusion that the sizing of the spectral is all based around inseam & seat tube length and that you should take magazine reviews with a pinch of salt - i know we all different shapes and sizes but for me my spectral doesn't feel "ridiculously small for its listed size" or "one size smaller"0 -
Thanks for the input switchback sye, much appreciated. Having just ordered a Spectral 9.0 SL and very similar stats to yourself, it has given me confidence that a medium was the right choice.
3 to 4 weeks hopefully and my 2nd Canyon (repeat customer) will be with me 8)0 -
I just took my Spectral AL 29er to Cwmcarn, Afan and Bike Park Wales.
Absolutely chuffed. It climbed without fault, ate up single track and didn't blink at rocky roots sections. My frame is XL so the tight switchbacks needed some careful balancing going uphill.
Bike Park Wales was my first proper fast descent experience. Loved it. The bike was so sure footed and solid beneath me. Cant wait to go back again and go faster.
Cant believe the difference CTD adjustment makes in riding and the benefits of a dropper post speak for itself. Wouldn't buy another bike without one.
I am 6'7" and weigh 96kg so the spectral XL is just right for me. Its a huge bike with massive wheels but i love it.MTB Trek 4300 Disc 1999

Seen a couple of bike tests now, which have said to switch the front tyre onto the back & the back one to the front on 27.5 spectrals, anyone try'd this? Apparently the front can slide then grip ( had this happen to me 3 times in the one day at Glentress) and this is a good fix, any thoughts welcome.
Might try this tomorrow!!!!Cube reaction gtc race 2011 26er, Canyon spectral al 8.0 2014, cube reaction gtc race 2015 29er

Took my Grand Canyon 6.9 29er to CYB yesterday, was brilliant. I just can't fault the bike at all, I thought the first section of the red all the rocks would be a problem not having a full bounce but nope the HT ploughed straight through, it was fun on the downhills, even managed some air (well as much as I usually get). The bike just feels right, going to struggle to take the speshi full bouncer out now as the canyon has performed so well since I got the bike.0

Spectral 9.9 looks very nice as well.
This may be a dumb question but wouldn't the tyres be the same front and back? What would be the idea behind switching them?Whether you're a king or a little street sweeper, sooner or later you'll dance with the reaper.

Not dumb at all, standing here scratching my head at this!!!! Thought that myself as they look the same front & back, but it has been mentioned in 2 tests now that they had swapped front to back and it was a better option!!! Not sure if they have a different compound or something?
Should I swap or not :roll:Cube reaction gtc race 2011 26er, Canyon spectral al 8.0 2014, cube reaction gtc race 2015 29er

the EX version has got a conti trail king on the front and a conti mountain king on the back, from everything else I've read this is the right way round so take what the magazines say with a pinch on salt. My Spectral 8.0 comes with conti mountain kings F&R but I got a Schwalbe Magic Mary for the front and will use the MK's on the back, the magic mary grips and grips and grips. If your front tyre is washing out maybe you need to let some air out of it or weight the front more in the turns?0
-
I've got a Spectral 8 coming (apparently) is there a reason you went for the Magic Mary or was it just that you had the tyre and it's better than the MK?
I've had conti verticals on a bike before and they were pretty good. The Nobby Nics I have on my anthem are ok but not confidence inspiring on the front.Whether you're a king or a little street sweeper, sooner or later you'll dance with the reaper.

I have just ordered my first Canyon on Tuesday. I deliberated for days over which model. Looked at Nerve, Nerve 29, Nerve 27.5, Spectral 29 but finally decided on Spectral al 6.0. I was about to go for the 7.0 but glanced at the 6.0 and couldnt believe how good the spec was. Its plebty enough for what I need. I have been riding an On one carbon 456 hardtail for a couple of years but fancy a change to full suspension.
Now I'm just sweating over delivery. I am going to Keswick for an annual weekend away and would love it to be with me for then. Thats in 3 weeks time. On the website it says CW 26/5 - 31/5. Anyone think I 've got a chance?0 -
I ordered a Grand Canyon CF SL 6.9 on May 5th. Just minutes after I arrived at work this morning I got a text saying the bike had been delivered. It's going to be a long day.0
