Not a bad price. The rest of my kit is black though, so they've got to be black. Dont really like the red/chrome look, looks a bit "oldie worldie"

Finally got around to posting some pictures of my Equilibrium. The whole project has taken way longer than it should have, but behold!

    Looking good! Very stealth.

PS: What's wrong with red and chrome/alloy?
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

    Thanks guys.

Daviesee, your Colnago is an example of how red and chrome should be done.

    Looks decent in black!

I finished the build of mine this morning, took it out for a spin. Chuffed with it, rides well (probably new bike syndrome)

Combines the best bits of my past road bikes, climbs pretty well and feels reasonably stiff when hammering it (like my old carbon frame I was gonna build back up) but its really smooth, comfy and great downhill like my old cx bike.

Also, if anyones after cheap forks for one, I got a set of these below which are 375 a2c and 45mm rake (the correct size) plus you cant fit fat tyres, fenders and racks: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/700c-1-1-8-IN ... 2a1314f337

Its not particularly light (probably due to the forks!) The build is:

    SRAM Rival
    Hope/Velocity handbuilt wheels
    Conti GP4000s tyres
    SJS forks
    Deda Zero 100 bars
    Ritchey WCS 4axis stem
    Syntace P6 seatpost
    SLR saddle
    Tektro R539 brakes

Still need to tweak the saddle postion, may opt for a post with a bit more layback as its right on the limit of the Syntace. Also, the bars need rotating forwards a bit and the stem is to be lowered and the steerer cut when I get round to it.

Some lovely examples on here, I am torn between an Equlibrium 20 and a TCR composite, very different bikes I know!
From the reviews I have read I gather the Equlibrium is no slouch when you want to give it some, is this true?

What is the largest tire I can fit as I am thinking of changing to Marathon plus 700x28, as I am hoping it will improve the ride on the canal path. Or should I stick to a 700x25? I am not sure if I will be losing too much on the road with a wider tire.

Thanks for any advice. Also has anyone double taped the handlebars for increased comfort?

28's are fine with mudguards. I wouldn't go for Marathon Pluses though as they will ruin the ride of the bike.

It's horses for courses. The Equilibrium, whilst certainly no slouch, would be slightly slower than the TCR, but a world more comfortable and arguably tougher for commuting duties. If you really, really have to be a smidge faster, take the TCR, otherwise the Equilibrium is a great ride.

Like UE says, it depends what you want the bike for. I'm quite impressed that the Giant gives you Ultegra over 105.

It won'tbe used for racing, it will replace my giant OCR which I use for long rides in the hills. Head says genesis, heart says giant!

Well I promise your heart will be very happy with the Equilibrium too. It may be a touch heavier on the ascent of your hills, but the handling on the descents will be incredible, trust me.

The bike is a commuter on canal paths, is there something else as puncture resistant? Also how will the ride be ruined? Thanks

I''d get the Giant, unless you do a custom build on an Equilibrium. I think the full builds that are available look a bit poor spec wise.

The Marathon's are like riding on solid tyres, they're incredibly harsh. You won't get any punctures but they will spoil the smooth ride of the Equilibrium. Depends what the canal paths are like but Continental Gatorskins are pretty well regarded as a good compromise between puncture resistance and riding ok.

Agreed, the Equiibrium is overpriced at RRP, either find somewhere doing a big discount or get a frame and build it up.

    +1

I think you could probably build a killer Equilibrium for the same price as an off-the-peg 20.

Yeah, and for the same price as the Giant you could build an even better one!

I test rode both - frankly you can't lose. They're both excellent.

Neither! I would have chosen the Equilibrium, but my budget was reduced at the last minute by the need to buy a double buggy. Ended up with a Cannondale Synpase 105, which is great, but not as good as either the TCR or Equilibrium.

As it happens I've just ridden the Advanced TCR as I'm looking to upgrade. Very, very quick, but also comfortable enough for a long ride. Clearly, not as plush as steel for all day in the saddle, but the geometry is not so aggressive that your nose lives on the handlebars.

If I had my time and budget again, it would be a very close call. There is something about the Genesis that made me smile when I rode it. If I wanted a bike for commuting and general riding or touring, I'd go for the Genesis. If I wanted something that would push me on to greater endeavours or have any interest in Strava whatsoever, I'd go for the TCR. Right now, that means it would be the TCR for me (interesting that it's a different choice to a year ago).

One quick question to think about - are they both available from the same dealer? I happen to prefer the Giant dealer (even though it's further away from me) over the local Genesis guys. That's always a factor.

    Been there.

Bit off topic......What's the difference between the TCR Advanced and Composite?

Back on topic - I have a TCR Advanced with some frame damage at the seat stay. I'm currently considering the Equilibrium as a replacement frame.

    What else would I need?

    Seatpost
    Saddle
    Stem
    Handlebars and tape
    Bottom Bracket
    Cables
    Brake Calipers?

Obviously the askium wheels can swap straight over. Am I missing anything?

    You need a 27.2mm seatpost.
Your current saddle should work fine, as should your handle bars and stem
    The BB is english threaded
You need deep drop brake calipers
    Cables
    BB Cable guide
    Bar tape
Downtube barrell adjusters (although your TCR will probably have some you can use)

If you go for it I have a pair of Tektro long reach callipers I can let you have if you cover the postage costs. They're off my old Pearson Touche and are in very good condition, but the little centring screw is missing on one of them.

TCR Composite is aluminium (mostly) and the Advanced is carbon.

It didn't seem right to me, so I've just been to check and I'm lying. They are both carbon-based. I guess it's to do with the quality of the Carbon composite. I'm actually going to have to ask a Giant dealer now...!
