Very nice indeed, Porly. It's a well-known fact that the cherry red ones go faster.

LOL! True. Mine is a cherry red one too, but camouflaged. I'll hopefully get some pics sorted this week.

I finally managed to get my mitts on one and despite going to 2 shops to check sizing (I am 6ft, 31 inside leg) who said get a 56cm, I feel the bike is too cramped.

I am know thinking I should have got a 58cm.

Is a longer stem worth trying for?

    thanks

I guess you must have a longer upper body than most blokes your size so I would say a 56cm with a longer stem is definitely the answer rather than a 58cm. Apart from anything, your bike will be well cool as it'll look like what the pros use.

I'm just 1/4" under 6ft with a 30" inside leg. 56 is correct size for me. It's supposed to be relaxed geometry that's one of the reasons it's so comfortable so I'd give it a while to get used to it. For what it worth I thought I needed a shorter stem when I first got it, but after a few ride changed my mind, I did bring the hoods up slightly from level though. You could try lowering the stem by taking some spacers out, that might help you stretch out and feel less cramped, or even the other way round if stem is too low. I take it, it's all stock?

Bike is all stock. If I fit a longer stem will I also need new cables etc?

I very much doubt it. I'd guess the stock stem is 100mm so fitting a 110 or 120 shouldn't affect your cables.

First commute today on the Equilibrium, caught a few flies in my mouth as was grinning from ear to ear all the way there taking the long route! Seems very quick off the mark and really stable at high speeds downhill (not wanting to tempt fate...)

Obviously different riding position to my Specialized Tricross which will take some getting used to but first impressions are it feels smaller than I was expecting, it's a 58cm and I'm about 6foot1 with approx 34" inside leg

You're pretty much the same size as me, and I ride a 58. Perfect fit with a 120mm stem and no spacers.

Enjoy it, it's been my best cycle-related purchase by a country mile...

Thinking a saddle bag is the least offensive looking bag I can attach to the Equilibrium to carry a spare inner tube and puncture repair kitesque stuff, any suggestions guys? Also need a small pump to attach to the frame if anyone knows of a decent one!

I use an old drinks bottle - holds a tube, mini tool, tyre levers, CO2 canisters inflater and repair kit

    One of these
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

BBB Aeropack: I have the small, which would just about fit a tube, multi-tool and small p****** repair kit. Really small, neat and well made, attaches really solidly too.
  • I'm looking at getting the Equilibrium frameset for a custom build. I'm 169cm tall and normally ride a 52cm frame, but based on the geometry, it looks like the 54cm model would be the best size for me (VTT and standover height in 54 is about the same as my other 52cm bikes). Can anyone confirm if these frames run slightly small?

Its amazing what a few glasses of red and a handy credit card nearby can achieve......lat night I bought a 2012 frameset.

I've got everything (mainly shimano 105) parts wise in my garage however I need a seat post. I know its 27.2 however anyone recommend a comfortable reasonably light option that won't cost mega bucks?

    Thanks

This is what I have on my Equilibrium, I highly recommend it:

Yes, that's right: a carbon FSA post for £20. It even matches the colour scheme. :D

Edit: Bugger, it's out of stock.

you guys using these as your weekend bikes too....?

I have something similar (Hewitt Chiltern) and currently deciding whether to go ahead with N+1 or just to change up to a ti frame or just MTFU and put the money towards something my wife would approve of - like a house.

I've just built mine up and had a little spin. 1st impressions are:

The frame quality looks pretty good, nice finish very impressed
I have set it up a bit more upright than my carbon bike and its very comfortable
The steel ride is really impressive, just so comfortable
Definitely quite a bit heavier then my CF bike as expected, you definitely feel this however its for rainy weekends and the winter so no problems there.
Full guards fit no problem and very secure, I'm running 25mm 4 seasons
3 pint rack should fit, might try a bit of light touring...maybe

All in very happy, I think the 5th bike has now covered all the bases...hmm apart from a CF HT for XC damn damn damn here I go again.

I don't use mine as a commuter - it's going to be used for everything but racing and commuting - but I have just posted it up in the your road bikes section:

    viewtopic.php?f=40044&t=12842415

Pretty happy with it so far!

Im close to buying one of these I think, fancy a change from my current bike.

I know I need to use deep drop brakes and Im sure I read somewhere that the Planet X CNC ones are compatible?

Also, is it possible to fit a rear rack (utilizing the mudguard eyelets) for some light touring?

There are no rack mounts on the seat stays but there are several solutions for that on the interne. No Reason you can't fit a rack.

Yes, Ive just been doing a bit of searching and it looks like I could use the mudguard mounts and one of those Salsa seat collars with an integrated rack mount.

as for the brakes, Tektro R538's are looking like the best option I think.

Just need to decide on forks

As for the brakes, it depends on your budget. Personally I have the Shimano R450 brakes:

    http://www.shinybikes.com/shimano-r450-57mm-brakes.html

Which work very well indeed, they're Tiagra level so more than decent and quite cheap. The next ones up are the Ultegra level R650s, if you require more bling.

Edit: And the matching fork, naturally?

I hadnt seen those. The tektro ones are black though and possibly a bit cheaper! I'm assuming I definitely need long drop brakes, I currently have some SRAM Rival brakes that have a drop of 49mm, Im assuming these wount be long enough?

    EDIT

Im not going to get the matching fork, I'll probably have a look for something lighter 2nd hand I think. Or I might see if anyone does a nice steel one.

Price for the R450s was the pair! Not bad at all, I thought. Silver looks nice on the Equilibrium, but go with whatever you like. If you want cheap and cheerful, the Miche long-drop brakes are OK, but like the Tektros, they have a tendency to get rusty bolts.
