It was finally my turn to take the Fratello in for its service in Condor last Wednesday. When booking it in I mentioned I was after a shorter stem and then with one look at my bike the lad told me it was way too big for me. I knew I was a little overstretched, but as I'm 5'10 and it was a 55... It's not a 55, it's a 58! I was shocked, but Condor sizing was explained to me and I was convinced tweaking it to be a better fit was a bad idea. And so, I'm in the Market for a new frame. A new Fratello is more than I'm willing to pay and besides, I actually suspect the Equilibrium has that touch more aggression I want in my commuter/winter trainer. I'm still not a fan of the red and am thinking of waiting to see what the plans for 2012 are, but I'm pretty certain I'm back on to create a nice Equilibrium.
If you want black why not get a 10 on C2W. It's £899 in Evans so with 20% vat and 40% tax it's £449.50 + fmv at the end but you get 12 months interest free credit too! A new red frame and fork is £419.98 but only complete bikes are available on C2W so only £30 difference. You can then strip and rebuild. Legally you will not be able to sell the bits you take off as it's C2W (at least not until end of hire period), but you would have a load of extra components which would more than make up the £30 difference.....--

Nice idea, but, being self-employed, I'm not eligible for C2W. I've also seen fame and fork sets for way cheaper than £415. Cheers!0 -
Right, sorry for dragging this one up again, but you Genesis riders might be interested in the new t-shirts that they've designed with the Howies mob. Just got an email to say they're available in the redesigned shop right now...

Look quite smart to me.FCN 3 / 40 -
All I want is for them to release a frameset that is not in shiny red. By the looks of their updated website, however, I could be out of luck.0

Both the new grey and blue look very nice. Mind you I'm quite a big fan of the red myself. Think they're still putting the 2012 range up on the website though, so it might be a while.FCN 3 / 40

Give me anything at all over that awful, glossy 'cherry red'.
The Genesis website seems to suggest, Equilibrium 20 = cherry red (again!), Equilibrium 10 = that nice pewter silver, Equilibrium 00 = a perfectly nice blue. We shall see what the frameset only comes as.0 -

Hey, give me pink over that red! It just looks so cheap (and not in the good, slutty way).0 -
Hello fellow equilibrium owners
Just found this thread, seen some good ideas for upgrades
Got myself an Equilibrium 10 about a month ago and loving it, only problem being soft brakes, and the rear wheel going out of true pretty much every other day, oh and the ultra race tyres puncturing at the merest sight of rain
Just noticed Chewy has the 6750 brakes, so that's solved the long drop dilemma i was having, just need to upgrade the wheels now0 -

Want to swap your frame for a shiny, new red one (providing it's a 56 that is)?
If it's any consolation, the wheels and the brakes on the 20 I test rode were a bit duff too. It was most notably the pads though so a cheap upgrade could be made there.0 -
Alas, i bought the 10 for the very reason that i preferred the black frame, not a big fan of the red, doesn't seem to go with things like a nice black frame does, saying that my eye was first drawn to the equilibrium after seeing the red frame.
The new colour of the 2012 10 in the pewter is really really nice, i could be tempted by that0 -

Thank you sir! A man after my own heart! I may be tempted to pick up a 2011 10 in the end of year sales if they drop enough simply for the frame.0 -
Since this seems to be developing into an Equilbirum owners thread, I wondered if I might ask for some advice. My Equilibrium 20 (in the gorgeous cheery red ) came with non-standard rims (DT swiss) fitted with Panaracer Duro tyres. These have now worn through the rubber on the rear (about 2500 miles), so I was looking for something a bit more durable, and also a bit wider than the current 23mm with the Winter in mind.
The obvious choice would be Schwalbe Marathon Plus 25mm or 28mm, but will these fit okay? With SKS mudguards as well? Or should I be considering something else entirely?0 -
25s will fit fine with 'guards, and I'd be surprised if you couldn't manage a 28. Personally I go with Rubino Pro Tech tyres, they're fast, light and tough. Mine last for about 4000 miles on the back, longer on the front. I know that the Marathons are slightly better against that fairy, but I just love the speed of the Rubino.
Good choice on the 20, by the way, red bikes go faster, everyone knows that.0 -
Now you've done it. ;-) I like the sound of the Rubino Pro Tech, but I love the look of the Rubino Pro in RED! Mind you, is it the right shade of red?
So Pro Tech 25/28 or Pro 23 in RED. Decisions, decisions.0 -

I ride 23's all year round, but I have a CX bike for snow. I personally don't think it makes much difference. Even if the tyres don't start out the right red, they will darken with time and a bit of road grime, so they may become the right red.0 -
Well I was toying with buying an Alfine-hubbed flat-barred bike for the Winter, probably with 28-32mm tyres. If I do that then the red tyres make sense on Libbie.
Had though about a Day One Alfine, but they don't do that flat-barred and I also think that it would be nice to have an alternative bike that's a bit more different.0 -
So word on the street has it that the Equilibrium frameset (as with the full build Equilibrium 20) will be the same god-awful cherry-red for 2012 as it was for 2011 (no offence to those of you with god-awful cherry-red Equilibriums). A bit silly IMHO as it doesn't give much of an incentive to buy the more expensive latest model, but anyway... I've been looking and looking for alternative steel frame options, but keep coming back to the Equilibrium as the perfect compromise.
Condor Fratello - great bike, but I want something with slightly more aggressive geometry.
Condor Acciaio - always liked the look of them, but there are several lukewarm reviews floating around the internet. Not to mention that frame and fork is soon to come in at a cool 750 quid! Oh, and it won't take full mudguards either.
Tokyo Fixed's Wide Open - perfectly nice looking frame (albeit made in China with one of Columbus's lower level steels), but the smallest frame has a toptube of 56.5cm, which is a touch on the long side for what I want.
Charge Juicer – on reflection, meh.
Roberts bespoke build – Would love one, but a little pricey for a commuter/winter trainer (this goes for the lovely Enigma steel frames and countless other ‘boutique’ frame builders’ options too).
And so I come full circle to the incredible-value, highly-reviewed, excellently-proportioned, mudguard-taking Genesis Equilibrium in god-awful cherry-red. But then I had an idea: what if I was to get a respray? Plans are afoot...0 -

Although if using Shimano, most of their road front mechs come in 31.8mm with ashim to make it fit 28.6mm tubes.0 -

Or buy a braze-on mech and a band-clamp, like this one:

That's what I did, means you have a good chance of using the same mech on another bike in the future, if required. It is indeed 28.6 mm on the Equilibrium.0 -
Too late for me as I have bought my frame now (still waiting for it to come back from Colour Tech), but for anyone interested in a 56cm Equilibrium, this has the potential to be a great buy:

It would be wrong to own 2 would it not? Anyway I don't like the cable coming out of the hoods.....--

Anyone with one of these reckon I could get away with 28mm tires (gatorskin or something similar) and guards?0
-
I've got 25c with guards on mine. Looking at it...... Seems like there's still a lot of allowance for going up to 28c. I do think that 28c is overkill though comfort wise. Unless dictated by the expected loads.0
-
I'm pretty certain that I read the Equilibrium could take upto 28mm tyres when researching them. I'm going to use 25s on mine, though.
Bought my frame weeks ago, but it is still at Colour Tech getting resprayed. Hopefully will have it ready soon.0 -
Just like busses: you wait all day for one to knock you off and then three have a go at once - there are suddenly quite a few Equilibriums on Ebay. Too late for me, but I suspect good deals could be had because they will be competing with each other.0

tonye_n wrote:Does anyone know if the new frame (Reynolds 725) is much lighter than the old 2010 frame (Reynolds 520), and by how much?
Yes it is and I have no idea (plenty of articles about it available on the web). If someone is offering you a 520 frame then it would have to be pretty damn cheap to compete with the cost of a new 725.0 -
