Well - I'm starting a formal training plan myself now for the next 6 weeks or so - gearing up for the World Championships. Some TT-specific work in there. Will be interesting to see if my TT times DO come down. Hoping to drop a minute off my best previous....

How easy/hard have you found it adjusting to the new diet?

    Very easy indeed...

And very easy to stick to, it becomes habit forming too which is a bonus. Plus, rather than a 'diet' per se, it's a change in the type and timing of food, that's all.

I've hardly ridden outside, virtually all turbo!

(I only really get an hour or so a session available so the Turbo is the most time efficient way of doing it...)
Hilly ride outside tomorrow ridden on feel. Can't wait! :o

great thread this - good to see how you're making gains.

    2 things for me though:

1 - can you share with us a little more detail on what type of work you're doing please - not expecting the detailed daily plan but more than just "...havent done a 2x20" would be very helpful ;)

    2. your last post above really hammers home the nail for me about the importance of goals - you say you're doing "virtually all turbo" sessions and that is obviously working for you with your goal(s), but would totally miss the point for me. I couldnt even think about adopting that training strategy at this time of the year  Depths of winter then fine but I'm itching to ride today 'cos its hot and sunny!

My racing goals have pretty much finished for the year now so my riding is going to be more free, can't wait to hit the trails on the MTB with my mates and do some unstructured rides... However, I'm still very bound by time constraints, even moreso in the summer holidays :x

My intervals have virtually all been SST but the timings in terms of length and number of intervals and recovery between sessions etc have been different from what I'm used to, i.e. shorter but more of them and he has an excellent 'chain gang simulation' interval session he throws in too!

Doers that include a special voice that tells you how to follow a wheel properly?

Turbo sessions do not really help for endurance work building for 100's and 12hr TT's though, hence why I haven't done any recently, building up for the KCA 12 hr is very important for me.

Going to start doing a few as of next week, just to get some speed back in the legs for other events, still be doing alot of endurance work. I don't have any real issues with time spent on the bike though.

Well, with regards to longer rides, I did a 45 mile hilly loop today I used to do quite often, not done it for ages!

Did it without looking at power or HR, just on feel (not least the batteries have gone on my PT) I ensure I remained seated on all the climbs and took it steady. I was rather shocked.

I knocked just under 35 minutes off my previous best time! My prev best was just over 3hrs, doing it in 2.29 I was chuffed to bits.

My cruising speed seems to have increased loads.

How hilly do you class as hilly? I did what I call a 50 mile hilly loop on Saturday - took me 3hr 25 - I was pleased with that! There was, according to my Garmin, about 4500ft of climbing, including a 2 mile long 15 percenter. This was done, where possible, at endurance pace.

I dont think I could see myself getting under 2:45 :(

I class a hilly ride as one with hills in it.

It's about as hilly as I can get it from my house in the middle of the cheshire plain in a 45 mile loop! Only c.3000ft. But still, over 30 mins improvement is good for me whichever way I look at it. I'll never be a climber...

2 miles at 15% average is a big hill indeed, where the hell's that!? Mow Cop near me is 1 mile at around 13% average and that's a bugger.

I can make a much hillier 45 mile ride if I start nearer the peaks...

heh, well it seems my garmin (and legs) are telling porkies!

Its that climb out of lofhouse. Its a bloody tough one, especially when the sun is beating down. At certain ramps my garmin goes up to 25% - its kind of my nemesis climb as when I started cycling I couldn't get up it at all, and now do it at least one a month, and the TT club I'm in uses it for a hill climb at the end of the season (which I'm not especially looking forward to!)

    Cheers Carley.

I'm always wary of what the Garmin says! It claims the last 25% bit of Mow Cop is at 30% and one called Coalpit Lane from this ride I did on Saturday is 20% most of the way up. It actually averages about 9% with most of the steeper parts being 17%...

How does the max altitude of the climb compare with what OS maps say? Surely if it is getting the max altitude right then it must be calculating the ascent correctly or else the accumlated ascent would be way under or over.

IIRC it adjusts all the data when downloaded e.g. say the Garmin unit shows X amount of climbing, when you download it and it plots it on the map (where the altitude data is confirmed) it can be as much as 10-15% over... The map data overrides the Garmin Altimeter data...

Does that make sense? I'm on a night shift and I go on holiday tomorrow so I'm a bit excited!

Yeah that makes perfect sense. That's altimeters for you with their dependence on air pressure. I get probs with my Polar when I get dramatic weather changes however on most rides it very consistent and peaks are pretty close to what map peaks say they should be.

I'm so excited too I get to stay at home and enjoy the persistent heavy showers and strong wind for next 4 days at least. Not jealous at all. Have a great holiday.

    Disaster :(

Two weeks away, a stone heavier and just been on the turbo to do some sweet spot intervals (note, not even threshold so they are quite manageable!)

Couldn't hold the power at all, in fact, I struggled to hold tempo on the second interval. My right leg (the duff one) felt like it was the first time it had ever turned a pedal!

I think I've farked it for the club 10 mile TT Handicap points champs as I needed a PB on Weds next week.

I genuinely feel like crying and flogging the lot.
