Anyone who was riding within 3 miles of me at the weekend will no doubt be delighted to hear that while the rear wheel is at the shop being put back together (again), I have changed the brake pads.

The leading edge of the inner pad was very nearly almost level with the backplate but the outer pad is still almost as thick as the new ones I have replaced them with.

    Is this normal.....?
    Nope.
If they're hydraulic one of the pistons is probably sticking or the caliper isn't centred correctly. They should wear pretty much evenly.

If they're mechanical they want adjusting.

Ibbo is correct there Ches.......while the wheel is being fixed get a piece of metal or similar that is the same thickness as the rotor, put it in between the pads, operate the brake and see if both pads are moving freely at the same rate.....(don't do this without anything in between the pads or you will struggle to get the pads/pistons back into the caliper)

If they are then assume that the caliper wasn't aligned with the rotor or the wheel wasn't aligned within the frame.

Hope you get it sorted bud....

  • Had a great afternoon at Delamere, dragged along one of my mates who bought a £900 Marin a year ago, and this was it's first time off road!! I think he could be converted.

Took on a downhill I've been bottling out on for over a year! Bit of extra confidence gained from last week at Llandegla.

Had a play in the skills area as well which was empty, reckon Phoebian would love the downhill course, short but sweet.

All in all a top days riding.

  • Haven't met Roo yet so I'll take your word for it. Still makes sense, downhill good, uphill bad. Sayin that I must be the only person to have gone down that downhill course with their brakes on all the way, if I'd had a camera it would have been like slowmo! Long live XC!

How's the riding at Delamere? Worth a 90 mile drive?

Yea, have to agree with Caz, Its one big green ride basically, full of families today on the main routes, which is good, kids getting into riding etc, it does have technical/scary bits tho, northshore/big jumps/short steep downhills etc, but the're off the beaten track, it's only 15 mins away from me and well worth a visit on a sunny day if you're close. I'll take some photo's next time I'm there.
