Personally speaking, I'd rather leave Cut Gate until later in the year as we have just done a Peaks ride, but that's just my opinion on the matter. All I would ask is that the original idea behind the thread is maintained and that the abilities of ALL riders is taken into consideration when planning your route.
    Thanks.
The Cutgate ride was just thrown in as I saw it on one of the first pages of this thread. Its not a definite date as I/we've got a Peak,2 Lake District and possibly a Yorkshire Dales ride to get in beforehand. If it comes off i'll let you know and anyone wishing to ride along will be more than welcome. We always ride to the slowest rider an tend to ride in a smallish group.I'm only 10mins from langsett so it might even be a short notice thing 8)

all I've done is wash it with Muc Off and soaked the chain in parafin to get the grit out of the rollers. The Dark Peak hills are made primarily of Gritstone and have a reputation for destroying brake pads and transmissions. Make sure the chain is properly clean and use a dedicated chain lubricant. If you're taking the chain off it might be worth taking the cage off the rear mech and cleaning the jockey wheels while it's in bits.

In terms of lube, I also use this.....

    http://www.team-zx1.com/Micro-Lube

on all pivot points and chain links then when the spirit base has dried, I use a proper chain oil as well. I have no specific proof that it lengthens the life of a chain but I feel better doing it and the 3 bottles I bought have lasted me over a year so far and I doubt I've used half of it as it only needs a dab on each chain link.

I hosed it off with a jet wash on the lowest pressure setting then used a really mild snow foam and hosed it again. I then just used WD40 as a short term measure to stop rust forming befoe I do the job properly. It's the grit I am particularly concerned about as I went through that big foot deep several meter long puddle and after that everything felt gritty. I have the finish line lube so that's ok. I just need to decide whether or not to remove the chain (or get a chain cleaning tool) and whether or not to remove the brake pads and clean the calipers before replacing them.

let me throw another destination in the mix, Llandegla, might be worth while setting up a ride here whilst we are deciding where to go and waiting for trails to dry out

I think I've mentioned Llandegla earlier in the thread, but I was hoping to leave it till the end of the Summer, maybe late August time...? Gives me time to try to get my fitness up a bit so I can actually have a go at riding it instead of walking, but if everyone else wants go go earlier..... :)

I'm happy with anywhere providing it's not Scotland or much below Birmingham, our car struggles on long motorway jaunts.

Cheshley :- if you can do sundays ride you can cope with Llandegla, there might be a couple of hills to push up, but i think most of us would be pushing up them anyway, and there wont be nearly as much pushing as on sunday
also there's no reason we cant go twice once now and once later in the year

still don't know the exact date of the new trail opening at cannock, the stories on bikeradar suggest it will be open on the demo day weekend there, which is the 20th i think
chase trails website mainly says Easter, but one of the chase trails team did say in a post on there forum that the date had been revealed on a bikeradar article
i will try and find out more

the other benefit, which i think i might of mentioned is that it gives the places with natural trails time to dry out a bit from the winter, i know that at cannock there will be a fair few trails that i would take you lot down that are probably unridable at the moment. im guessing its the same for other places, except for trail centres like Llandegla which rides pretty well whatever the weather

so when do people want to go
and which trails would they like to do

personally i would do the black followed by the red, but could just as easily do 2 red laps or a red and blue. for those who haven't been don't think the black is way out of your league, its more of a higher grade red, there is nothing there you cannot roll. the main difference is there are more climbs (some can be skipped if you know the shortcuts)

There's a small piece about Cannock Chase on page 28 in the March issue of What Mountain Bike. It says that the demo day is on 21st March, the new "Monkey Trail" will open the day before. The new Monkey Trail will be 12km long and will link into the existing Follow The Dog loop making it 22km total length. The new trail is more technical than the original Follow The Dog with a few black sections - it's a lot more challenging.

point taken about letting the natural stuff recover from the winter. I'm not really fussed when we go (or where), I have a 36 mile BHF ride on 13th March (see my Sig below).

Personally, I know I wouldn't have the confidence to ride Black graded stuff, even the Red route at Dalby has me walking down as well as up!!!!! and I've never even seen any Boadwalk, never mind tried to ride it. My thinking for when I got to Llandegla was Blue followed by Red. I'm sure if others wanted to ride Red/Black, we could split up and meet somewhere later as I think people who are Black run riders would be bored stiff on the Blue!!!!!

I'm planning on doing a Skills course or 2 this year, starting with getting back to basics and then doing an intermediate later on so hopefully confidence levels will increase this year.

normal cannock i would say would be slightly less than Landegla on the Haribo scale (you could be on to a new grading system for trails here)
but the new stuff in the area its in will be a 2 packeter

there are plenty of cafes as well

to be honest if we do cannock i would leave out the original follow the dog trail, and do a mixture of natural and the monkey

Come on guys, we can throw options around till Christmas. Let's have someone with local knowledge pick a time and place and we'll ride it. Cannock looks lovely, Llangegla has options for everyone, Gisburn , Rivington............

I'm sure we'll get to them all eventually but which one first...?
