Both,if you're human 8) If you start from Langsett you have a looong technical climb to start, but the upside is as its an out-and-back you get a fast as you dare descent on the back-leg 8) The downside is you have to do a short but very,(and i can't stress very enough), tough climb(walk) on the way back.
Its only 11.1 miles but packs in 2231ft of ascent/descent.It's one of the "must do"trails.

Unfortunately can't do 28th March due to other commitments and Easter weekend is a def no no unless I fancy my cojones removing but any other weekend is good though.

Are we putting the next ride up for a Poll?

    Rivington Pike or Cannock anyone?

There's the really steep rocky one down to the very northern tip of the Ladybower dams(the mother of all climbs back up).
Then there's just the 5km(with a couple of sharp ups)blast on the way back 8)

It doesn't have to be bad, it just has to be uphill

I've always fancied having a go at CutGate tho, I've walked some of it from Langsett, the first long climb is quite narrow and rocky if I remember correctly, with a steep grassy drop to the right awaiting anyone who gets it wrong  How about the other rutted climb up from North America which joins it further up......?

We go up the BW on 1 side of North America and on the way back down the other,so we use both. But from where the paths meet its an out-and-back.

I'm not bothered where the next one is guys, it needs someone with knowledge of the routes to take it by the scruff of the neck and say when and where tho. You will always get some people who can't make whatever date you decide on so let's 'av it. Personally speaking, I'd rather leave Cut Gate until later in the year as we have just done a Peaks ride, but that's just my opinion on the matter. All I would ask is that the original idea behind the thread is maintained and that the abilities of ALL riders is taken into consideration when planning your route.

    Thanks.

Apologies for this being a bit off topic but what maintenance should I carry out after Sunday's ride? I've washed all the mud of and just sprayed a little WD40 on the chain and gears to prevent rusting in the short term. I guess I should remove the chain and soak it in parafin or similar then lubricate it but what else? I have some powerlinks but haven't broken a chain yet but it doesn't look to hard. If lubricants other than chain lube are required then recommendations would be helpful.

    Thanks

    Dan

(My aches are starting to subside enough for me to think about the next ride now!)

i think you've done enough, you dont really have to take your chain off. if youve given it a good clean then it should be fine, a degreaser is best, but something like muc off or hope bike wash will do then give it a good oil, most oils say clean off with a rag after to remove the excess, but im not sure how important that is

I would get a better oil than WD40 as its not great for bikes, but all i have done is washed my bike down with a little bit of muc off and lubed all the gears and chain with a wet lube like http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=1041 , or something like the GT85 spray would do.

that oil will do fine, but don't use gt85 or wd40 as a lube it will disperse to quickly

all I've done is wash it with Muc Off and soaked the chain in parafin to get the grit out of the rollers. The Dark Peak hills are made primarily of Gritstone and have a reputation for destroying brake pads and transmissions. Make sure the chain is properly clean and use a dedicated chain lubricant. If you're taking the chain off it might be worth taking the cage off the rear mech and cleaning the jockey wheels while it's in bits.

In terms of lube, I also use this.....

    http://www.team-zx1.com/Micro-Lube

on all pivot points and chain links then when the spirit base has dried, I use a proper chain oil as well. I have no specific proof that it lengthens the life of a chain but I feel better doing it and the 3 bottles I bought have lasted me over a year so far and I doubt I've used half of it as it only needs a dab on each chain link.
