have you had the chance to ride a hammer schmidt yet..

yes they stupendousley expensive (well over here) and yes they weigh a fair bit compaired to a conventinal crank set..

yes it could be classed as gimiky,,

depending on what kind of riding you do, they are pretty dam good i have ridden one the instant shift is awesome when attacking climbs especially teccy climbs the clearence you get to having no middle chainring... shift pedaling forward backwards or dont pedal..
i don't know if they worth the money ie you have to buy the hs the shifter and bb..

we got ours super cheap in whistler got an amazing deal on it.....

Me lol. Or less sometimes ;-)

What I am saying is if you added a 140mm fork to the Zaskar it would have the same head angle as the P7, but slightly slacker seat angle.
  • hehe...doesn't change tube lengths tho :P

I'm toying with a new fork for the Zaskar - the Rev race 2010. Has the extra over the Tora now that it didn't really have before (for the money).
  • still havent had a bloody reply from rutland about the race :(
  • Right... the build is no taking a bit more shape...

Rev race 2010 have been bought from Rutland... will get photo's up as soon as they arrive.

Now I was some opinions on 2 things.

    1) Cranks.
    I don't know what I want....

XT is a whole lot cheaper than most and light... but its not as "bling"... if only XT cranks came in black

The raceface Deus XC cranks are around the same price and weight AND are black.. but how strong are the Deus cranks/chainrings?

Or do I sacrifce some weight and pay more for some RF atlas double AM cranks?
I would prefer a double crankset if i'm honest, because i'd never use a big ring...never have and never will.

    Help me out here!!!

    2) Wheelset
I'm planning on going to merlin for my wheels but am stuck on what rim to get (as always).
I'm getting hope pro2 hubs with DT comp DB spokes.... but what rims? I keep hearing XM719 around but I have no idea!
  • SLX cranks, almost the same as XT but arguably better looking and a bit cheaper? more money for other bits and bobs?
    Santa Cruz Chameleon
    Orange Alpine 160
  • Agreed on the SLX vs XT - unless it's a racer and you are 10 stone when dripping wet then it's not worth it. It's a heavyish build and you're heavy bloke, so the SLX is well worth it for a few grammes, and look better too. The RF Atlas are plenty strong enough if you want black.

Re: rims. Hope Pro II on 719 is a winning combo, or if you want something burlier go for the 729s.. but I am not much lighter than you at 14.5 stone, and I was fine on them when I had my attack trail.

    Merlin built of course ;)
  • Right. That's fairly similar to my build, with the exception of finishing kit (i've got thomson and easton monkeybars 8) )

If i were building it again i'd go for

stans flow rims on hop hubs
u-turn revelation maxle lite in 150mm
slx double/bash with 24/36 (i have deus cranks for my inbred but i'm not convinced by the spline and bolt arrangement, prefer the shimano pinch bolt style)
slx mechs with xtr shifters (so smooth)
    KMC chain
    thomson/easton finishing
Either raceface deus, FSA orbit II XL or hope headset
    hope bb
I like the elixirs (have cr carbon on the inbred) but would probably go for hope tech V2 with floating rotors
then hope qr and seat clamp (bear in mind it's a rather odd size needed)
I'd still run it tubeless, large tyres are great on these though.
  • The hope seatclamp is thie single biggest POS part on the whole of my NS lmao!

Good point about the SLX though... I'd forgotten about that, totally agree with the slx v xt argument too!

Some good things to think about there, cheers guys :)

+1 for Pro II & 719s - mine have been bombproof and I'm... ahem... a little heavier than 14.5 stone!

    Defo +1 for Merlin too.
  • right... taking on board what you guys have said i'm thinking...

    SLX Chainset + BB.
    XT rear mech
    SLX front Mech
    XT shifters

    Pro2 on 719 wheelset

    Already got a hope headset

Brakes... still in 2 minds here.. will make a decision when the time comes :)
    Samegoes for finishing kit :)

According to sunset mtb, the frame should be here just after xmas hopefully, just depends when Orange release the next batch of frames.

I definately prefer building to my own spec... its much more fun. Plus it makes your bike a little different to others :)
