this is the problem with top end sram, shimano is definately better value on paper. it could cost 10 quid for a whole groupset and i still wouldnt run it though. (apart from cranks, front mechs and cassettes of course which are the best by far in my experience)

i had to find summat to replace the shimano on my stumpy but couldnt bring myself to pay for xo so fitted x9 which i swear hand on heart feels no different to my xo.

i liked xtr and xt alot, i thought it was very nice but it didnt feel anywhere near as nice as sram did for me.

for value if i was a shimano man, i would fit xt.
  • Well I have t touched my NS gears for over a year. Tweaked to compensate for cable stretch once or twice an that's it... Slick as a mofo!
And I've got a loose/worn jockey wheel lol!

thats still more work than my sram has needed. 8)

im not trying to be awkward, and i apologise for slightly derailing the thread.
  • Haha I don't care tbh... It's all related to how I spend my monies!

Wish there was more variety with gearing :(

Ben, SRAM XO is friggin awesome, looks great but is pricey AND the durability of X0 rear mechs worries me. As I hardly ride the Marin, and only on roads and dry-pack trails not a problem.

If you can affored it - go for it. However, I didn't go down that whole 'Redwin Red... Nugget Gold' route - adds money on already pricy kit, just go traditional carbon X0 and shifters... £240 the lot from CRC and Merlin, and buy an XT/XTR front mech.

    :)
  • Fun :)

Put it together again now i have spacers.... perfect height.. (well maybe lol... gotta sort the forks before I cut the steerer) :D

Ben, when you say 'sort the forks out' what do you mean? You mentioned getting some fork oil etc.... you changing the travel, if so from what - to what?

EDIT: that looks awesome! X0 is the way forward on that matey :lol:

I can't wait until I can take another build on, I miss it!!!!

Roll on Mojo build end 2010 ;)
  • Cheers jay12

Really happy with my saint hubs so I though I'd stick with shimano :)

Saddle should be here soon but I have no seatpost yet... doh! Thomson on its was soon though!

Brakes I think I'm decided. Going to get the white Louise Carbons, sell the rotors and buy some Saint/XT CL rotors.

And gearing is gonna be PIIIIMMMPPP

And i've gotta get red ano KCNC bottle bolts (bleedin £30 for bolts), an E13 dual bash/chainguide and some Red ano KCNC chainring bolts, pedals, chain and cassette!

Not far to go really :)

Aye...wacking a spacer in and dropping it to 140mm (its at 150mm now which is about 10mm too much )

LOL - the Ti Dusters are awesome, save that link you had/print it off..... stunning!!!!

Yep, always wanted a mojo, and after that pic of the naked carbon one the other day, it swung it for me. Frame first, then DT forks and the rest piecemeail when/if I can afford it.

Full XTR (already have a bike with X0) - hope brakes/Pro 3 SP wheelset / thomson finishing kit.

    About £4.5k worth total

    ahaa good shout sheeps!

I had thought the bottle mounts were quite low!

Yep he's right so it looks like Da Mighty Chicken has the wrong mech too

Then you will need this one:

    http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/mountain- ... -mech.html

Hee hee, I actually emailed Orange before I ordered the front mech and they said that both would fit my 17" frame ok, so hopefully all will be well :D

Ben, did you order the Velox Fond De Jante rim cloth from Merlin at the same time as the wheels? As all I can see on their website is this yellow plastic thing? Did you order the yellow thing and get the Velox?

Builds coming on nicely now mate 8)

on crc you have the choice of the fonde de jante rim tape. i bought my custom rear wheel from crc because you have more choice, it's cheaper, you get that fonde de jante rim tape and dt swiss spokes and they came pretty quickly too. oh i think the wheel was about £10 cheaper

Thanks Jay, I'll have a ganders.

I was looking at CRC for the wheels at one point as the wheels will be about £20 cheaper and also 6% cashback through the link in my sig, so another £15-18 off that again BUT, and its a big but (jokes on a postcard to....... ) my hatred of CRC from the treatment I received on my first big order from them has put me off buying anything expensive from them again, and also are their custom wheels put together as well as merlins? Still looking into that one?

hmmm.. mine are really great, no problems at all so far even after a few crashes and heavy landings. also the wheels come with a note saying they trued the wheels about 3 times IIRC. i have never had problems with CRC after about 10 orders and 2 of them being big ones, one with the rear wheel and some bits, and the other with most of the bike bits.

you must have been one of the unlucky ones i guess, as crc don't screw up often.
  • crc are good for wheels... got the tape with my spank wheels but they already have rim tape so i saved it :)

the difference between merln and crc is that crc wheels are machine built and merlin are handbuilt.... hense the price difference.

great looking bike. can't wait to see it finished mate
  • Cheers both :D

Yea the revs are very simple inside, much easier to work with than originally thought! the lowers are sooooooooooooo light. Wish i'd weighed them tbh!

For now i'm sticking with the minions... they're single ply so not too weighty. But eventually i'll get some ignitors on there :P

    jay12
Tell me about it! need it built nooowwww
Might use my Saint brakes until they're sold. Really want magura louise :)

a mix of my Thor forks, the Hs33's on my trials bike, and the one time i has a ride on magura disk brakes, im starting to think that they really are the best at everything! i cant fault any of their kit! so, so good.
the luoise is def a great option, will look epic too. but the forks, while lovverrrly are wrong, need to Thor out a bit!:lol:
    I like bikes and stuff
