Everything is brand new. Need to double check the hanger ain't bent, but I don't think it is.

The process is exactly the same as it is for SRAM but I tend to find Shimano is much less 'linear' in it's response to adjustments; nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, miles too far, nothing, nothing.......

It must be "linear" else the shifters wouldn't work. And, certainly, the adjuster screw thread is linear. Does suggest to me that something isn't right in the system - sounds like something is sticky somewhere. Worth investigating before driving yourself insane

This isn't just this install, it's my issue with Shimano in general. Maybe it's just more sensitive than SRAM.

I'll have a proper go at it this evening. I've spent long enough adjusting the front mech that I'm just going to take it off and start again. Rear is shifting fine, it's just that nothing happens on the first click so it only shifts up to 9.

The rear cable tension is too loose. Yes, the adjustment is quite fine - you don't want to be adjusting it by more than one increment at a time but the process is pretty simple - apply tension until it starts getting noisy (half trying to shift) then back off slightly. The front is simpler still - mostly just Hi/Lo screw adjustment.

That's the first thing I tried; pull the cable through with pliers to get good tension. When that didn't work I called it a night.

As I say, it's exactly the same process as SRAM, which I've set up countless times across four bikes so I know how to do it, I just find Shimano more troublesome.

Turns out my rear mech is a little bent after my crash. 100 miles of almost-shifting on Sunday nearly put me in a secure ward. Have been trying to straighten it, but without much success. Am I wasting time I could have better spent simply going and getting a new one? CRC are doing 105 mechs cheaper than the Tiagra one I'd be replacing.

Sounds like the shifter isn't at the start of its available range - make sure you've clicked it all the way down whilst pulling the cable through at the other end, then set it all up from scratch.

Barely bike-fettling, but my car boot was failing to open on request; traced it to wires in the loom from body to bootlid being broken or close to broken (4 out of 6 were). Reconnecting them has improved matters 100%, so I can now get the bike in & out of the boot, which I couldn't at least once when I was out watching the TdF.

After a huge effort to tidy the cave, I had room to do stuff, first time in eons. Cue fettling marathon...

Switched seatpost on Colnago back to the original one.
Swapped headstem with the one off the single speed.
Put previous 'Nago seapost in the SS
    De-stickered Fulcrum 1 wheelset.
Replaced rigid fork in Storck MTB with a Rock Shox SID XX.... lovely
Back to proper dirt tyres on the Storck, and swapped bars for flatter carbon one.
Proper clean and adjustments to Pinarello. Still a faint occasional clonk somewhere in the drivetrain.... grrrr
Tidied tools drawers and sorted the spare parts inventory... wondered how on earth I ended up with that many spare seatpost and stems???

I bought a cheap third hand cable puller thingy the other day. Heavily discounted through work, with extra discount as some sort of promo they were doing. Never felt the need before but it was so cheap it seemed rude not to. You are more than welcome to borrow it and see if it helps.

I've got a 'third hand' in the tool drawer, but I've never actually used it. Never felt the need to before.

I still say the shifter isn't at its start, which is the most likely reason for the above. Doesn't matter how tight you pull the wire if it's starting in second gear.

I think we should have a poll about people with creaks. I have one, its really making the commute horrible and entirely unpleasant.

I am stripping and retightening every moving part on the bike tomorrow as well as fitting a new chain and a pair of BB7's that turned up.

If that doesn't resolve the creaking. I'm throwing it in the canal

Yup - if it pulls no tension on the first click no matter what you do, it most certainly is. Either that or it's a 9-speed shifter

i have nothing to fettle, its so bad i re-spaced an old 7 speed wheel to fit my ribble.

Rewrapped bar tape and regreased all my cup and cone wheel bearings

I need a project, perhaps i could tweak my shifter position on the R5, seeing as yesterday I changed the spacer from weaved to plain carbon to match the frameset

    On the MTB:

Bled and aligned both brakes, not much better so probably needs pads.
Replaced FSA bash guard with a 44t ring and sorted the shifting out. This was was more faffy than it sounds.
Getting a saddle for Mrs Ini tomorrow and recommendations, as far as my measuring went she'll need a 155-160mm
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

    Went out to garage.
    Put bike on stand.
    Put on blue gloves.
    Poured glass of wine.
    Drank wine.
    Poured another glass of wine.
Locked up garage and went back to sofa with remaining bottle of wine.

Fail. Should have been beer unless the gloves were to hide the fingerprints from the OH.

Quality which could only be improved if you left the blue gloves on whilst drinking wine

Asprilla gets my vote for top fettler in the SCR awards at the Xmas bash.
  • Swapped seat to son 1's bike, fitted seat to Mrs ini's MTB, changed front brake pads to EBCs, Avid Juicy now stops but the rear is still noisy. Tightened seat on Son 2's bike.

    Peugeot 525;
re-wrapped my poor bar tape effort, cleaned & greased seat post while fitting the commuter light setup. Yesterday attached spd-sl 105's, failed at fettling my brakes :?

    Charge Plug Freestyler rebuild;
New token bb fitted, new fireeye iris x headset wrestled into place, fork crown fitted and fork attached with lots of lovely parktools grease(much nicer to work with than the weldtite stuff i'd had previously), cranks fitted, stem & bars fitted before finally popping the wheels on for a bit of satisfaction before retiring to a well earnt shower

EDIT- forgot, new deity sp collar & charge chopstick seatpost also in place :)
have to remove the Halo Fix-T bling as it was crushing the rubber seal on the bearings.. :?

Built up a friends' Felt Z95, suprisingly quite easy for a boxed bike. All he has to do now is grease the seatpost and put his R540 pedals on once he's got the clipless thing sorted. Everybody he's told he's gone clipless have told him that at some point he'll topple over, it's a rite of passage.

The bike didnt make it to the canal,

I stripped it down to the frame, everything off, except the shifters. I greased and lubed everything that moved. fitted new BB7's (revelation), fitted new cables (front requires more fettle) and put everything back together. Blisfull peacfull ride in this morning with the only noise coming fro, the clicky freehub.

    Happy bunny.

    Fettled the disc brakes,

Still not right but i think that is down to an out of true rotor.

More fettle required on the front derailuer as well, it is not shifting the full way up to the big ring.

  • Tiniest amount of fettling as the CX prepares for its sportive outing. Rack off, extra bottle cage on, pump mount on, saddle bag on, gps mount on. I even lubed the chain. left it muddy though.

Studiously ignored the slightly out of true front disc which makes interesting vibrations and noises under heavy braking. As I have done for the past thousand or so miles...

Love it. :-) I'm going to have to change my fettling routine now to match this also.
