Bearings need adjusting on front wheel so swapped it with a spare and swapped tyre & tube too. Adjusted the brake blocks but neglected the toe-in, suqeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallll

Finally built up the new CX bike. Big thanks to Veronese for digging through his magic box of bits and finding shims for the front mech.

It's not quite a Frankenbike, but it's not far off an agglomeration of old and new parts - only the frame, fork, chainset and wheels are new:

- Crosslight 5T frame
- Pure CX carbon forks
- AL 57 PX wheels

- Ultegra rear mech
- Ultegra shifters
- Ultegra cassette
- 105 front mech

This new model comes without jumping gears. Scaring a rider into moving over through jumping gears at Hillingdon was probably a sign I needed new gear...

A problem I normally solve by tweaking the rear shifter cable. Fixing it by replacing the whole bike? Chapeau!

Unfortunately not this year, I've managed to coincide the Mrs having a premature baby with a job that puts me in Salford for two days each week and I'm starting a new role soon that puts me in Lisbon for a week a month. This means that unless it's for a work reason I have to be home to help bath the kids.

My timing, as usual, is impeccable.

Does indeed look good CJ, sorry I couldn't chat as snarlers were burning on the barby. People don't believe me when I tell them I know where stuff is in my cave, can't imagine why. The mess does keep the Mrs out, that and her fear of the killer door.

Bought a cheap supermarket bike for the purposes of leaving at the other place to get about on. The promised quick assembly - fit the bars, pedals & front wheel and you're away - is a joke. Faults:

Front and rear brakes stick instead of releasing
Wheel bearings are as dry as the driest analogy you can think of and feel like a bag of stones when spinning the wheel on the thumbs.
Seat post is a gnat's too small for the seat tube
Headset bearings are too tight
The rear forks are too narrow to drop the wheel out & back in.

Apart from that it's ok, except for having the nastiest gears I've used in years. And an uncomfortable saddle. And brake levers facing the floor. And frame packing that looks suspiciously like the bike has been already been sold and returned as crap, which it is. I like a challenge...

An hour or so of tinkering to apply grease to bearings & brake pivots, adjust everything so that it runs a bit more smoothly and the brakes release properly, tweak the headset and prise the rear triangles apart a bit and it's rideable. No wonder you never see these things out & about though if that's how they are out of the box. Fark, as we say here, it's sixty quid's worth of junk but it'll do for occasional use and if it's nicked, well... trebles all round. I had to get the proper bike out for a quick spin up the road to remind myself.

I have one of these bikes, after the rear mech exploded mid ride I removed the gears, swapped the saddle, stem and handlebars for drops then duly left it locked up at Paddington to rot

Errrr, why would you do this when it is so easy to get something cheap and respectable from Ebay? £60 can get quite a decent old thing if you don't need it tomorrow.

Been looking on those places but most of them look like like tat and the stuff that does look interesting goes for about the same price anyway. It's also likely that having bought & collected the bike there will be the cost of replacing the brake cables & probably the tubes & tyres etc, sorting out the gears and generally making it rideable - that's what I've had to do with all the other bikes we've ever picked up cheap, they need sorting.

On balance the new but crap option seemed preferable to the punt of getting something for a similar cost that then needs more time & money spending on it. And I prefer not to ride something that that someone else has spent a year or so farting & picking his nose on. Mainly though it's for leaving under a bike cover on a farm for most of the time. It's not going to do any miles.

loads of stuff went on last night!

steerer tube cut on my Look. Stem now slammed. Feels so much more comfortable. and actually Looks better! proper saddle to bar drop now, no idea why i didnt do it sooner!
New cables fitted
New right hand shifter body fitted (swapped the main assembly but kept the paddles as the ratchet had gone)
Crank arms had their pedal spindles swapped from 172.5 to 170, Look zed cranks have all three sizes built into them!


Note, i did almost none of this, but had a hand in some of it and did the pedals myself

New brake / gear cables, new chain and cassette, new bar tape. An commuter ageing bike now runs like new, sweeeet.

Also figured out the creaking was from the rear hub, so running an old wheel for now, and now looking to get that fixed. Hope I don't need a new hub though, else it's gonna cost a bit.

Replacement shoes arrived from Wiggle on Thursday so roughly fitted the cleats and done the sit on bike test. Rode with the shoes today and the cleats are spot on. Pull away from lights etc, stand on pedals and I'm in. Just need to tighten the bolts up.

Prepping the Ribble for hols. Medium cage Veloce rear mech so I can go fast down alps as well as slow up them (Frankencassette 11-29) added, new chain plus Vittoria Open Corsa death tyres. All tested and all OK. Front punctured after test ride and took me longer to get the tyre off the rim than it took to swap derailleurs and index the new one.......
