Fettled the brakes and fitted a new chain to the commuter. I may also have cleaned it, causing this morning's rain shower. Sorry.

Built the new commuter/winter bike on Friday. Very nice to ride and 48:18 is a much better gear for setting off from junctions and hills, although top end is down a little. Just need to get the rear mudguard back on.

Do you think you could have gotten a longer valve?

I thought the long valve was to help find the label on the tyre.

Repaired the zip on my Gore windstopper jacket after breaking the pull tab mid commute when I stopped at an ATM, managed to locate a key ring in work which done the job. Question is do I buy another Gore jacket?

The old bottom bracket creak started again last night, figured it had been a while since i had stripped and cleaned the drivetrain. Couldn't believe the amount of muck that came off the chain and derailleur pulleys!
Must start cleaning the bike more often i think...

How old is it? My experience of Gore (the company) has been excellent (none better, in fact) and I think (unless it's ancient) you'd get a very sympathetic hearing from them if you gave their customer services a call.

I think nearly 2 years old now, already had the jacket replaced once cause the zip wouldn't mesh up correctly after 4 months.

Forecast to stay above freezing for the next week, so I've taken the spiked tyres off my MTB. They've been on for 1600 miles at an average speed of 13mph :(

Pulled this out of my tyre at 8 miles tonight. The tyre is still fully inflated :)

Just removed a chain that is now soaking in degreaser!

Not quite fettling but after my first 40 miles on the road bike i had a sudden urge to empty two toolboxes into one and claim one for all my bike tools i've accumulated, must be all the fresh air...

Full on wheels out clean in the sunshine, and a strip and regrease on the headset. The equilibrium has suffered over winter with all the grit, and the wheels are wearing fast.....might need some velocity a23s for the summer. ;)

*ETA* Also changed my rear tyre after some 5,000 miles with one vist, but now very square! Another 25c Rubino Pro 2 - no reason to try anything else with that performance!

I can imagine there were bikes doing this all over the country today!

Complete stripdown and rebuild of the bike after a solid soaking in 100 miles of biblical downpour yesterday. Probably the reason the sun for the week has just changed to rain.

    Sorry

Made a couple of minor adjustments to the Kinesis. Gave the old Marin a good clean and lube. Checked over the boys road bike so that's all good for him to ride to school in the morning. Fettling in a tshirt rather than shivering in multiple layers was an absolute joy.

Moved the discs over to the new Mavics with Hope Pro2 hubs
    Ditto tyres and tubes
Ditto rear cassette which was soaked in thinner and is now all shiny again
Stripped crank and cleaned BB out, lubed everything in sight. BB30 cranks are stupidly easy to maintain. Pity I haven't got the tools for the bearing sets themselves, but it's all running very smoothly now.
Stripped front mech and cleaned everything. Made the startling discovery that the angle of the cable for the front mech makes a HUGE difference to how easy it is to change gear (cable it to the inside so it tightens the cable on as you tighten the nut)
Stripped rear derailleur after finding one of the jockey wheels was actually seized. Cleaned and fixed but got replacements on order.
Powerlink on my SRAM 1051 chain is buggered, and the chain felt RAF so I've got a 1091r inbound as a replacement
Stripped and cleaned the BB5s (ish) basically the adjusters were siezed so they got stripped out, cleaned and lubed.

    That was a rough Winter.

  • Another little fettle tonight, correction of pothole modified shifter positioning, rewrap of the tape pending replacement. And fitted my new 105 pedals, because they are shiny.

After having put 150 miles into Kiwi I adjusted the gear and brake cables and tightened the LH crank as it was making funny noises as I pedaled along. Till I ride it again I won't know wether or not I've cured the noise.

I've been commuting this week on my MTB fitted with 700c wheels n tyres.

It's noticeably slower than my road bikes, both of which are out of action with rear wheel issues.

But what I couldn't understand was why other MTB riders were passing me. I'm not too bad at the old SCR action now after five years practice.

I felt the rear wheel was a bit 'draggy' but had put that down to the 28c tyre on there compared to the 23c I usually ride on my road bikes. But no, I noticed this morning that when I spin the wheel it rotates half a wheel's circumference and then stops on the disc brakes. Damn!

Was too late to do anything about it this morning so have just been down to the work car park and re-shimmed the disc brakes to free up the wheel (luckily I keep a selection of spare shims on the 'other' end of the disc brake bolts).

Looking forward to the commute home now!

Do you not do the "loosen caliper bolts, apply brakes, tighten caliper bolts, release brakes" method to get everything aligned? Takes seconds. Or are the discs a bit knackered?!

That only works for post mount. IS mounts require shims to align the caliper to the disk.

But I now buy post mount brakes for my other MTB's cos as you say, this is by far the easiest method.
