Today I received a late 80s Campagnolo Record hub and an appropriate 7 speed freewheel.

I eagerly screwed the freewheel on and have now realised I don't have the tool to remove it.

Finally got the bloody Felt finished and ready for the road.

Got to say: the new chain, jockey wheels and loads of lube everywhere (on the bike!) has made the ride REALLY smooth and quick.

I'm usually quick if i'm covered in lube

I do hope the old lbs guru was imparting some of his wisdom when telling me to try the 135mm adjustable stem instead of the 120mm I asked for, as I've just fitted it and still cant get a good position yet :| motherf...

Back to the drawing board for catching this weekends social club run, need longer front brake cable most likely unless i crafty the cable thru the tape mid-way :? and to iron out (to the best of my ability) any positioning issues! Knowing full well that the sooner i get to a club, the quicker i could actually ask someone about my positioning on the bike

sod it, shower & beer time methinks...

If you're lucky you might be able to turn the freewheel by hand enough to get it off the hub.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I've already ordered the Park FR-5 I need to get it off. I figure I'm going to need it sooner or later.

Bought a few of the £4 Lidl chain cleaners and gave it a go. Put too much degreaser in and made a hell of a mess
Seemed to work pretty well though. Roads are just filthy still - two or three days commute and the bike is like it's been ridden in a sandpit

"off t' park", see if i can get this stem setup right for myself..
looks seriously odd with just half the drops taped, can imagine some snobby looks

Why would you 'buy a few' of them? I've got one (just the one!) - a Finish Line one but not dissimilar. It's so far done me getting onto 30,000 miles worth of chain cleaning over three and a half years and I'm pretty fussy about my chains. Just how far do you plan to travel before the next Lidl offer?

seriously not one fittie! how rude, must have been karma as i nearly broke my neck the other day while on the mtb with a friend, had to investigate the most beautiful lycra clad specimen i've ever seen. She was pushing her steed uphill to the car rack but, i digress erm yeh where was i-the stem/bar seem setup good though i only did 10mile.. :|

But I now buy post mount brakes for my other MTB's cos as you say, this is by far the easiest method.
That will by my plan for any future disc braked bikes if possible. My current MTB has IS mounts on both front and rear. :x

not done yet but first thing tomorrow i intend to apply a thin strip of double sided tape to the centre of my challenge forte tyres then stick the zefal tyre liners, fit a tube and reassemble the whole lot.

There no way I can continue riding the dead feeling conti hardshell.

How are the Fortes? I remember you saying they were doing quite well against punctures in your neck of the woods but I take it that's changed?

I've still not got round to ordering the Stradas; other things got in the way.

They're very good but recent rain here has covered all the roads with small bits of flint, those little feckers make their way through anything.

  • Bottom bracket transplant this morning. The old Token one had done amazingly well over the past 8,000 miles it's been in service. Replaced it with a new Hope one. The bearings on the new one are certainly a little stiffer than the old, I'm sure they will loosen up with a few miles, but by God, it feels so smooth and seems to have made the chain set seem less flexy.

Repaired 4 punctured tubes and patched three tyres, cant beat good old fashion vulcanised patching.

I also fitted a set of koolstop pads to the back of the commute, my oh my what a difference those make, i'm going to have to be careful on Monday.

Fit fork and bars back on the repaired frame.

Failed to get pedal off crankset (drive side)

Failed to fit guards - recessed brake but doesn't fit when using a daruma bolt and they don't include an l-shape bracket as standard.

Stripped down the Madone this afternoon. Somehow I managed to get the rear casette completely screwed up when I reassembled it. It looked more like a doughnut than a cone by the time I was done.

Still and all... everything back in the right place and working again.

Re-tightened the loose lock-ring on the rear rotor AGAIN!

If it doesn't stay tightened this time a re-think is required.

  • My new Pompetamine had her first outing yesterday - 34 miles over the South Downs. Even went off-roading!

Put the Brooks saddle on and saddlebag. All good for tomorrow's commute.

Fitted the big cassette and Tiagra rear mech to the turbo Focus Variado. Not used Tiagra before but you can really see the difference in quality between that and 105 (smaller gap between 105 and Ultegra). Put the Toupe saddle from the Volagi on the Variado too as the Volagi has the Toupe Gel on it now (the Variado saddle was inducing some numbness  )

Fettled the Volagi -only 10 days until L2E

Cleaned the Cube - think I'm safe to take the Ice Spikers off (I hope - took the winter tyres off the Alfa Romeo this weekend)

Fitted new charge spoon saddle, I bent the old ones rails last week while skillfully not clipping in and slamming down on the saddle!

Also fitted some new dual pivot brakes, the old ones were only single pivot and pretty rubbish, I'd tried replacing the pads on the old brakes and it didn't really make any difference. So settled down with my tools and a beer on Friday to fit them, rear went on fine ish, front didn't fit, then realised I'd put the front on the back and that my frame (an alu Raleigh, not that old) wouldn't take the recessed bolts! Had a bit of a google then just drilled the holes bigger and all fits nice and perfect now!

Dual pivots are sooooo much easier to adjust!

Err yes...well...the 'proper' bike shop ones run to at least £15 so 3 for £12 seemed like a fair deal and future inflation and all that. I read another thread where someone suggested they were almost disposable type items for taking on trips etc but I now resolve to lovingly look after the first one and give the other two away as pressies :D(I might keep one spare)

I'm in the process of building a new bike ATM. Today I've started on the cabling from the flight deck to the brakes and derailieurs.
