Stripped the front & rear mechs off the Allez along with the chainset and BB and bars, stem & STIs. Cleaned up the front mech and fitted it to the Kaffenback along with the chainset and new chainrings and bars and sized up the outers for the Gore extra, extra, extra long brake cables. Still need to get the forks cut before I can finish the brake cable routing and wait for the carbon ahead sapcers to come from the Far East.

Funny crunching noises from the BB of the 'dale last night, caused by knackered bearings.

So I was mostly stripping the old BB out & ordering a new one. Bike out of commission for a couple of days :(

I haven't done the fettling, but the Dolan is going into Lunar Cycles (Kentish Town) early next week to have new Ultra Torque bearings installed. I don't have a bearing puller and don't intend on buying one. It needs a new cassette as well so they are doing that for me as I left my big socket wrench up North!

I can't complain; those bearings have seen 4 years worth of shitty miles.

Usually get about 2500-3000 miles from a chain. Just measured my SRAM 1031 and it's past the 1mm wear point with 1100 miles on the clock...WTF!

I had a 1051 in stock (bought for £14.99), will stick that on and see how that goes. Never had a chain wear out so quick.

Just popped my new Dura-Ace chain on the V - very 8)

Rather shocked by how much the old KMC chain had worn.

Just finished the road bike build with some fizik bar tape. Took it out for a quick spin, quickly noticed that the saddle is in need of significant adjustment, so put the bike away to clear up.

Whilst clearing up I noticed that the gel inserts intended for the drops were still sitting on the table; doh

Must remember not to do the same when I tape my bars, my Specialised gel pads are in the cupboard safe from dirty hands.

New chain and cassette on the commuter.

Not my fettling, but picked up the Kinesis Crosslight from the Bike Fixer today with the fork cut and fitted, with bars on. It looks nice, even if I do say so myself. Had initially bought some silver-rimmed PX wheels for it, but might buy some black-rimmed wheels instead to match pretty much everything else.

CJ, I've got the new wheels I'd bought for the Kona in the garage if you want to try them. Not particularly light, but you can chuck them on to see how they look if you fancy.

Had a look at Boy Snr's bike - the one he managed to lock up at school before Christmas. Discover that:

    - hanger is bent
    - rear mech is a bit off the straight & narrow
    - rear brakes are worn down to the rivets
    - no adjustment left in front or rear brakes
    - back wheel is decidedly out of true with many many loose spokes.

Lord knows what he's been doing on it but it needs a bit of attention. Five quid for a pair of brake blocks and an hour or so sorting out the brakes, rear mech and truing the rear wheel + putting an equal tension into the spokes has it feeling a bit more like the new bike it was 6 months ago. Anyone else ever get the feeling that teenagers shouldn't be allowed to own a bike unless they pay for it out of their pocket money? At least it didn't cost an arm & a leg to get a bunch of wasters at Evans to put it right at some indeterminate date in the future.

Cheers. I was looking at some lightish wheels for it last night. Was getting a bit carries away. Need to get back to you abt the skates, too.

Yep, had to look at my nephews last weekend after he was complaining that it was hard work cycling and discovered that ;-

    - front ns brake block didn't make contact with the rim and was rubbing on the spokes
    - all cables were shot
    - rear brake pads were worn down to the rivets

Upon further investigation and after an hour of futile fettling, discovered that;-

    - front ns brake mount was bent meaning that you couldn't set it parallel to the rim
    - rear wheel was so out of true that it couldn't be put back, especially with the cracks in the rim that I discovered.

End result was me condemning the bike, especially in light of the £40 that was paid for it

Four days and nobody has done any bike related fettling or confessed to any? Changed my new hub from 135OLN to 130OLN to fit the Kaffenback.

Removed rear wheel, cassette and bearings with a hope to revive dead freehub

Don't have 14mm allen key so couldn't remove it anyway and freehub sounds pretty useless. Just whizzes in both directions.

Also I can now feel on the drive side bearing races where the grinding is coming from.
  • Fitted some SKS Chromoplastics mudguards to the Equilibrium. Replacing some lesser SKS Blumels which had cracked, warped and generally were never installed quite right. New ones went on quite easily, really, considering their reputation. They seem more solid too.

Only one more week before I can put the summer wheels on! :D

I cleaned out and regreased the freehub on my aksiums as it was making the death howl on decents, it's now very quiet but feels smoother on freewheel.

Are you trying to make this winter last forever? At least you're far enough away that your foolhardyness may not have too much impact on me.

Less to do with weather, more to do with the clocks changing. I get to ditch the dynamo front wheel and light and replace them with my new wheels. The winter rear wheel is in desperate need of a service, too. Noticed a wobble side-to-side when I was fitting the rear guard.

Cut steerer and setup new Fox forks on the xc

Invested in an icetoolz crown race remover 8)
o my word alot less faff and no swearing :? felt like i'd done something wrong..

Now rock shox to go on a trek frame, then need to rebuild my destroyed homemade headset remover all before the F1 and plan is to commute on the trek while i tart up the ss.
May pickup a road hack next month if possible and donate the trek to my sister who wants to ride xc with the kids, she has spesh hybrid an i've used it to commute at one point so can honestly say they are pointless..

Fitted new Durano tyre to rear of CX after suffering yet another visit with the Conti Hardshell Gatorskin (CHG). Looking at the pattern on the tube I think it was a pinch from the cuts in the tyre, hence changing the tyre.

Just need to think about how to repair the CHG, as it's only done a few 100's of miles.

    -Charge ss maintenance-
Ditched the knackered half-link factory chain, replaced with a kmc s1 after some good old fashioned elbow grease on the freewheel & chainring. Only hoping for a couple of months use, until tart up time 8-) would it be possible to remove this using the special link, to keep as a spare.. sayin that for the price of a pint I'll order a spare :D

I got her very wet today, she was filthy. So I spent ages lovingly fluffing her up. I have applied plenty of lube and I'm now looking forward to getting my helmet out and riding her hard and fast.
