Mud tyres fitted. Then refitted when I realised they need to be fitted in opposite orientations. Sintered brake pads fitted. Burn time tested on NiteRider Pro 600 lumen lights - 5 hours - pretty impressive. Dirt board fitted. Bike loaded into the "team" van. Puffer here I come.
What have I done?! :shock:ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
Well it's 4 months since I built the bike so I guess it's about time I gave that limit screw a turn and a half so I can finally get to the 23.Mud - Genesis Vapour CCX

Weekend bike washed. Bike brackets installed... now have nice installation art in my second room. I.e. two bikes on the wall. What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?0

Massive fettle with my Dahon Jack commuter over the weekend, which I've ridden for two years with just a very occasional clean n lube. It all started with deciding that I had to do something about the brakes before I got myself killed as they had been getting worse & worse and were by now next to useless.
So I change the blocks, all well n good, then noticed the rear tyre had numerous gashes in the sidewall, and is looking horribly misshapen, which explains the strange handling I'd been feeling recently, so get & fit a new tyre.
Then I decide that since I've gone this far I'd better check the chain stretch as I had been getting a faitr bit of slippage recently, the 1% checker tool drops straight trhough with a massive gap, OK, new chain needed too.
Fitted new chain and took it for a test ride, & the chain slip is worse than before - completely unusuable in the most used gears, check the cassette and thats in a bad state too, so buy & fit a new cassette.
Finally try and set up the brake pads optimally and it turns out the rear wheel is a right mess, a couple of broken spokes, worn rims and way out of true all over the place. Had a go at truing it but gave up, and decided on a new wheel (the originals were pretty rubbish anyway), so get and fit a new wheel.
This all got way out of hand, but had the first ride in since today and the bike feels the best it's ever been, and I'm actually enjoying riding it again, well over £100 spent, but it gave me a big smile to ride it in this morning.0 -

Filled a cut in my Gatorskin with superglue. Noticed a bit of glass too late today and had the tick-tick for 200 yds from a bit of glass stuck in the tyre but went no furtherI've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Replaced jagwire outta an inner rear gear cable as the ferrule (outta bit from the end of the cable) had snapped so my shifting was all over the place
i was doing "on the move" adjustments last night on the way home
i now have all my gears again woohoo!!Keeping it classy since '830 -
im a fan of the 'on the move' adjustments too.0

Spent a few hours on Sunday 'fettling' the stock.
Cleaned the drive train and adjusted the rear derailleur on the commuting 'hack'. I now have the full range of gears again and "climbing out of the saddle" is less likely to result in chain slip and subsequent unplannd contact with the saddle .
nb, The headset bearings still need replacing though but that's now a job for spring (as it was last winter  ).
Replaced the batteries in the most used lights.
Bled and topped up the brakes on the MTB (note to self, I really should read up on how to do this properly....! ).
Took a few more bits of the road bike (mudguards, saddle, bottle cages and lights) ready for replacement of the rusty top tube, respray and subsequent rebuild. nb, I really must make up my mind if it's worth getting the frame converted to side instead of centre pull brakes :? .
Found a few more smileys to use .....

i havent got a work stand so making adjustments then turning the pedals a bit doesnt really work for me
but turning a barrel adjuster as your riding along works a treat
I'm always doing that to sweeten the shift up a bit but you have to watch with bikes with less clearance and thick gloves though :oops:0 -
Replaced the freehub on the commuter/baby transporter -- bike's no longer stuck in neutral/ baby won't have to walk the 2 miles to nursery on Monday.
(Side note - 'Cheers' to Merlin Cycles -- I ordered the replacement freehub late Thursday night and received the order Saturday before noon. Very pleased.)0 -
The Look Keo pedals were starting to sound a bit grumbly so I've just had them off and taken them apart to see how they fit together - surprisingly easy to do, once they're off. A good clean, a dollop of grease where it should be and back together and they're good as new. Also took up the tension a bit as they were becoming a bit to easy to clip in & out of.
Top tip, one that I picked up on here is when refitting pedals to the cranks, tighten them only just past loose - just a nip & no more, and use a bit of Copperslip or similar on the threads. These almost fell off as a result of doing that when I fitted them new in September; the first time ever that I haven't resorted to grunting to get pedals off.0 -
gave the bike a darn good clean and tighten the chain, which sounds like it's probably had enough, looks like new chain time soon!0

Fitted brand new and free (bought some 2nd hand brifters and derailers and brakes were part of the sale) Tiagra rear brake caliper to my District. Original caliper was a bit tatty and was sticking a bit. Trimmed the cable outer as well, resulting in a smoother action all together. Unfortunatly the front caliper is a tad to short, and I don't fancy trying to use the tires as a braking surface, so will be selling that one.
Cleaned and adjusted the standard front brake after refitting (this time with some Shimano paste). Proper braking again .0 -
Thought I needed a new BB. Turns out the cranks just needed tightening.Mud - Genesis Vapour CCX

Fitted new front mech after original damaged in crash. Nearly got the gear shifting right, but might need a new cable. Also chain probably has seen better days too...
Also fitted koolstop brake blocks to front but having problems with LH block (viewed from front) not moving or releasing correctly. Wonder if thats a sticky cable problem, can't ever seem to get these v-brakes right frst time...Invacare Spectra Plus electric wheelchair, max speed 4mph0 -
What is wrong with me ...
Fitted new red deda handlebars and campag brifters to my steel road bike, then attempted to set up and index front and rear mechs but FAILED big time, i've done this hundreds of times.
Turns out the new down tube cable adjusters were set all the way down - duh!
All i have to do now is fit my new lizard skin red bar tape and its ready to go.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Fitted the shifters on my bike build and hooked up the cables and sorted the routing. Also got one bar taped and the cassette on.
Tyre's, brakes and fettling is all that is let to do.. also tape the the other bar lol0 -
Both bikes scrubbed and chains/casettes cleaned and relubed. Noticed rear brake pads on the Cube missing any grooves so new pads fitted and adjusted.
Carbon leather chainstay protector stuck on the Cube.
Now perusing the interweb for some new white bar tape to replace the dirty red tape that's been slowly unravelling itself.0 -
New KMC 9-speed chain on the commuter... the old Shimano chain was only about 3000 miles old but was almost a link longer it had stretched so much ... then again it was an eBay purchase so maybe wasn't really a Shimano???
What a difference a tight chain makes to the shifting, so much more precise now...Invacare Spectra Plus electric wheelchair, max speed 4mph0 -
Cleaned and lubed the chain and cassette, moved the seat a bit more forward and up a couple of mm (I think I almost have it right)0
-
Solved the problem of the inconsistent rear shifts! Turned out the cable had frayed inside the shifter until it was right about to snap.
Swapped out all of the cables for Jagwire racers. Anodized inner cables? Why not!
Need some new bar tape though!0 -
Fitted a new freewheel to the Tricross as the babymakers ahd a couple of close encounters with the toptube tonight, might just need some light lube in the old one. Will look at it later.
Moved the led lights on my helmet from mounted in the centre to the sides so the lights are now at 2,4,8 & 10 o'clock with straight ahead being 12 o'clock.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0 -
Not bike related, but it is fettling, just on a wifi network.
My girlfriend lets her neighbour use her wifi connection f.o.c. but the neighbour's lodger is supposed to pay a few quid a month but rarely does.
I decided to go into the router to cut off his connection for a while but accidentally disconnected all wifi connections. I plugged the PC into the router and sorted that out and everything returned to normal but the problem with the lodger still existed, so I had another go.
I fiddled with the inner workings of the router again and, despite everything looking right, when I clicked 'apply' the PC was still connected to the router but now the modem (its a combined wifi router/modem) wasn't connected to t'internet. The gf would give me big grief for messing up her internet connection. Slight panic.
More fiddling around and trying this and trying that but still no internet. Rising panic.
I really needed to go online to read some online tutorials on how to reconnect to the internet, but couldn't go online to find out how to go online. Catch 22. More panic.
Without telling her the problem I turned the PC off and left it overnight.
After she left for work I tried again. Turned the PC on and had another fiddle. Still no internet.
Eventually I thought, reboot the router and see what happens. Guess what, reconnection to the internet and it looks like the only connection allowed is my gf's. Not sure if the neighbour will be able to connect or my gf's lodger (both out of the country so I can't check their PCs) but it looks like the neighbour's lodger is no longer connected.

Fitted my new wheels! Arived in a big box on my doorstep yesterday. Wheels have been built by StradaWheels as replacement for the standard wheels that came with the WTF. When the WTF arived just before Christmas I noticed that both wheels weren't true. I contacted David @ Beardedman.co.uk (where I ordered the bike) and he told me to have them trued and send him the bill (I'm located in The Netherlands so not really 'round the corner from him). So after Christmas I went round the lbs to have them trued and was told that the spokes in the rear wheel were to short (about 4mm of thread was showing on each spoke) and that the wheel was spoked 'wrong way round' because of the disc brakes. Emailed David straight away and send pictures the same evening. He told me he would have a new pair of wheels spoked right away as a replacement for the wheels that shipped with the wheels.
These are the replacements. Velocity Blunt SL, XT hubs and Sapim Race spokes. I don't have to tell you that even though I was pretty p1ssed off at first I'm really pleased with how the problem was solved.
After putting on the tires (Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 28x2.0; plush ride but a b1tch to fit on the rims) I adjusted the BB5 brakes, tensioned the chain (needs to be shortend a bit) and checked the rest of the bike I took it for a ride around the block.
Ohh, and yes, this was done in the living room 8) . But only because the 'fettling room' (dining room) was being used by SWMBO so she could study... :oops:0 -
Crud road racer mk2's fitted, had to fettled the rear, bit of sanding to the zip tie bit and had to space out the rear caliper with a smaller diameter washer to allow the guard to sit higher but no rubbing now and the back and front spin freely, don't look to bad to be honest.
I didn't make it easy by leaving the 25c krylions on it, they are on a mid 2000's USPS Alu Trek. Pics to follow tomorrow.0 -
New rear gear cable on the Kona Jake for tomorrow's ride.FCN 2-4.
