bought a second hand bike a few weeks ago

    11-02-2012_12.jpg

It's a bit beaten up having been used by a mate for commuting for 6 years or so. Headset was fooked

    28-01-2012_06.jpg

and so was the bottom bracket (difficult to show a worn BB but the grit gives you an idea of the general state)

    11-02-2012_02.jpg

    Replaced the headset

    04-02-2012_08.jpg

    and the BB

    11-02-2012_07.jpg

tweaked the gears so that they all work now, cleaned the chainset

    28-01-2012_03.jpg

and now have a spare commuter for those days i fancy riding something else.

it has full shimano 105 on it and the frame is my size so i thought it was a deal for £120.

  • Successfully removed pedals from the MTB with a view to fitting the shiny new DMR V12s I've got sitting here. Tried the same job with an allen key yesterday and it was absolutely not happening. Once a proper pedal spanner was applied however, they gave up fairly easily. Mostly.

On my Mongoose nasty weather bike, fit new chain, almost new cassette, and new gear cables. Cleaned & greased headset (really needs a new one). Finally replaced horrible cable discs with hydraulic ones off E bay, this meant replacing the shifter pods. Only now do I realize what a horrible state i'd allowed it to get into!

Stripped down the two single wheel trailers (refuse to own a car!) cleaned, greased, and fitted Schwalbe cruiser tyres as the original tyres were non descript MTB ones. Decided that as it hasn't rained yet this winter it's not going to now so time for some faster road tyres, can't wait to go shopping! :D

up close that saddle and the tape is pretty worn out, after all it's destined to spend it's life waiting outside for me at various wilts/hants stations.

    Poor thing

There's a niche for the ultra lightweight, packs-into-a-matchbox bike left at a station cover, no?

Got to replace the cleat plate on one of my SPDs or replace the pedal with one of the spares I've got and didn't realise I had. The pedals are 15+ years old so not surprising the plate has broke really.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    Degreased and re-oiled my chain.

Replaced front mech, tweaked it till it worked just right... took hours of 'test rides'

Tweaked up my brakes. A controlled rear wheel skid is a great alternative to a bell when approaching pedestrians from behind.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Stripped the whole drivetrain on the Dolan, clean and degreased the lot, cleaned the bike in general, replaced bottom bracket and put new tyres on. Ran out of Swarfega...

Gave the whole thing the full strip & clean down over the weekend. It was due its annual big service even though it's only 6 weeks since I last did it. Reckon I might go for the winter bike this year.

Finally got fed up enough of my left pulling fixie to attempt to cure it.
Respaced the rear hub to ensure the wheel is exactly in the centre.
Changed the BB from a Campag double to a Shimano triple and messed around with the chainrings to ensure a perfectly straight chainline.
Used Sheldon Brown's String Method to check straightness of frame.
    Removed, regreased and replaced headset.

    Absolutely no change whatsoever.
Fliped the rear wheel around and tried using the other side to see if the problem either went away or became a pull to the right. Still no change.

Considering getting a bike mechanic mate to have a good look at it.

Thought about cleaning it, but just not in the mood.

Tonight I've put a larger chainring on the new Stronglight S2000 chainset, removed the old chainset and BB and installed an old BB with the new chainset onto the SS Tricross. I have cleaned up the old chainset and chainrings in preperation for flogging them to the local fixie hipster brigade.

Hmm...Just bought a Cannondale Caad 8 upgraded the wheels to Mavic Aksiums and a close ratio ultegra block, 105 brakes. Put the Tektro brakes from the Caad on my 87 Raleigh special, had the front wheel rebuilt on my Tri-Cross comp, got a new 8 speed block for the Ridgeback Horizon workie hack bike, getting a bit silly really.

Have you checked that the forks are square and the two arms are parallel? (don't know how you would do that, maybe the same string method)

Dusted off (quite literally) the Scott for a ride this morning.

Fitted some green Swisstops, the first time I've bought them, so will be interesting to see how they compare.

After breaking a spoke last week I decided that the Kona Jake needed a post winter service so I cleaned off 4 months of accumulated mud & road grime. Replaced the rear gear cable inner & outer and actually got the thing clamped as per the Shimano service instructions this time . No more quirky rear shifts.

I'm now afraid to ride in the mud. ;)

have bought (recently) and fitted to the 'dale:
    - new Wheels (Fulcrum R7)
    - new (shorter) stem

but after yesterday's appalling weather, I realise that I need
    - new tyres (sigh)
    - Crud roadracers

Have also bought a bucket load of stuff for the old steelie, pending respray

It's just a hill. Get over it.

For those who've had a pro bike fitting you might already have something like this bike fit measurements chart

My original bike whisperer sheet is a bit tatty now so i've transferred the details to one of these, quite handy.
