Got sick of the duff Sora brake lever gear shifters on my work bike, they've been acting up and I cycled home with two gears the other night, you can't fix them by the side of the road at night so....gone analogue. Put on some old frame shifters ( none SIS) instead so now it should be bullet proof, and shift better funny enough, I'm calling it an upgrade.Glen (work colleague) 'So Tony, those stars in the sky..they're not really small...they're really far away?'

Got an 87 Raleigh 531 handbuilt with a six speed on the back as well, love it. Well, it didn't work out quite how I'd hoped on the way home - cassette too worn so the new chain was skipping in all gears but the very extremes, made for an interesting ride home, I can tell you. Have ordered a new cassette.0 -
Spent a small fortune on Park Tool CBP-3 and 5 to service my Campag Power Torque BB.

Replaced rear wheel on the old steel with my new handbuild mavic askuim sporting a MASSHOOF 12-29 cassette
Replaced chain with KMC X10 and re-indexed rear mech
Replaced my wornout 16T single speed cogs with a new one (hard to get off)
Replaced old shimano M315 pedals on the MTB with crank bros eggbeaters
Adjusted saddle fore/aft on carbon Ribble
Adjusted saddle fore/aft on old steel

I am not cut out to be a fettler
I noticed this week that my brake levers were pulling way way too much so figured a quick adjustment was in order - although since I've never really done any adjustment before, there was no way it was quick. Every time I got the brake lever to where I wanted it to be, I'd spin the wheel and it would either not spin or rub annoyingly at one spot. Fixing those would take the brake lever too loose again. Arrgghghghghghgh! Still - I think it's now OK... the test will be whether I go whizzing through the lights tomorrow morning at VB while desperately squeezing non-responsive brakes.
This is a downside of being single. It would be so much better to hand over to a bloke who likes getting oily hands and mucking about with bits of bikes - and actually knows what they're doing.0 -
You might need to rotate the whole caliper round a bit. Depending on how tight the nut fixing the brake onto the bike is, you might be able to do this by grasping both pieces of the caliper and carefully twisting them round.
Alternatively, if they're dual pivots (i.e. modern road bike caliper brakes), you can adjust the centering of the brake with the adjustment screw on the top of one of the caliper arms.- - - - - - - - - -

I've just fettled a beater of a MTB (trek 800) I picked up for nowt back to life
. Cleaned, de-spidered, lubed, new (cheapo) cables & chain, indexed the gears, swapped the canti brakes for V's & rerouted the cable round the seatpost to make them work properly. I'm stuck on the pedals as they're rusted in solidly but am going to get the heatgun on them tomorrow night.0 -

That's a good idea. The cantis on the old Raleigh I picked up earlier in the year are pretty rubbish thanks to the (no doubt innovative at the time the bike was new) in-frame cable routing. V's would doubtless work better.0 -

fitted itm aero bars, new cables and tape. Decided I didnt like the size of the middle aero bars so untaped, hacksaw off a few inches, taped back up.
Fixed the slight wobble in the front wheel. So, spokes are threaded backwards? I just got one of those multi key spoke nipple tools and started twisting...initially not the desired effect. Still, wheel perfect now.
Family of mice moving in on my chain, chased off with some lube.0 -

After 3 very busy weekends my bikes were suffering with a bit of neglect. So, I gave them some love from a bottle of lube. The front mech on the Jake wasn't quite right. As I'd had to move it when freplacing my chainrings I thought I'd undo everything and start from scratch. Adjusted the position of it so it was just right, re-attached the cable and got it all working absolutely perfectly on the stand.
Rode it in today and it won't go onto the big ring, not even close. How is it you can get them working perfectly on the stand, but with the extra pressure of actual use it's not quite right? I know I should have checked it whilst fettling, but there was a hot cup of tea and slice of cake my daughter had made calling me.0 -

cleaned the drivetrain this weekend (think the sunny sunday was extra motivation to get degreasing in the communal gardens) for the first time since i started commuting six weeks ago. the state of it... felt like a proper neglectful parent.
sadly the nearest jetwash was shut. and neither of the other two sodding garages nearby had decent water either, so the bike itself is still icky... but the chain and gearz are funky fresh.FCN 10 - Crosstrail0 -

Noticed at the weekend that there was a load of sidewards play in one of my SPD's (M520's). Now they're only £20 a pair of so but I thought I'd take one part and see what I could do.
Piece of cake - stripped it down, cleaned everything (f*ck me those 24 ball bearings in each pedal are small!), re-assembled with plenty of grease and adjusted. Now they are perfect again. Might look at sourcing some 3/32" bearings from somewhere and replacing them next time.
Ooh, just found a site that sells the bearings for £11 plus vat and delivery...for 500! Anybody want to buy in with me?0 -
my mate just angle ground my old freehub off the old axle so i could get one piece off it (it then slipped the opposite direction). and then I built a fulcrum racing 3 rear hub from bits scattered around into a working wheel.

I messed about with my son's old bike so his mate can use it. They're doing Bikeability 3 at school tomorrow but his mate got his bike nicked, so got my boys old bike going for his mate to use.
My back brake was maikng a horrible noise, I knew I was going to need pads soon so thought I may have worn down to the cartridge holder. Upon inspection I hadn't, but there was a 3mm chunk of ali from the rim stuck in the brake pad material. Made a horrible noise.
A neighbour asked if I'd look over his (grown) son's old bike for him. It's a Giant CFR, old composite thing. Seems to be carbon fibre tubes bonded into ali lugs as far as I can tell. Fixed a puncture and gave it a general check over. Gear shift seemed a bit stiff, a bit a spray grease seemed to fix that. The group set is Sachs, New Success I think. It's got Camapag wheels and chainrings. It's far too small for me, but I rode it aroud the block a couple of times until I'd got it all working properly. It's a lot lighter than my Kona.0
