Changed slicks off wife hybrid to a pair of conti speedkings and removed the recently fitted kickstand.
Turned the little-uns SS MTB back into a geared (SRAM) off road MTB fitted with guards and bell, said little un then choose to use her "commuter" ie school bike sans guards etc.
Several hours of prep for 3 very hilly muddy miles in the Savernake forest, told you to take the bike with suspension and mud guards, raises eyes ....Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Been working on the 1980 Raleigh Record Ace. Finally fitted the alloy wheels. The wheels the bike came with were steel rimmed (though, oddly, the hubs are really good Maillards that may be original - but tied to one Raleigh and one Van Schotthorst steel rim) and probably a good 750 grams heavier than alloys. Easy job - put the freewheel tool in a vice, drop the wheel onto the tool and turn the wheel to remove the freewheel. No poncing around with torque wrenches and chain whips etc. Bike now looks much smarter for the new wheels.
Having got the replacement (original RRA Maillard hub, Weinmann rimmed) wheels on with a pair of new Panaracer Pasellas to replace the rock hard Michelin World Tours on the old wheels I then decided to get the brakes working properly (mainly just a case of cleaning everything and greasing the spring contact surfaces) and adjusting the position of the rear brake cable so it doesn't press the left side brake into the rim - that's what the internet doesn't tell you about Weinmann 605s). Aside from refitting and greasing the crank bolts that was it.
The bike now feels vastly better and actually has some braking. Still hard to climb it but a transformation all the same.Faster than a tent.......0 -
I've been gently fettling the Cayo - putting on the new 105 chainset that was "leftover" from my Boardman 105 conversion.
A have a few BB-related conundrums
- do I leave on the FSA crankset or fit the 105 version? I've always found the 105 shift on the Variado sweeter than the FSA version on the Cayo. The only question is which is the lighter - will take the FSA off and weigh.
- should I swap the BB for a Hope stainless/ceramic version? I'm a bit surprised by how much resistance there is in the Ultegra one that's on there - though no play or coarseness. I'd expected it to spin freely but not at all. Reading reviews of the Hope BB, that's not an uncommon experience with Shimano whereas the Hope spins much freer.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
Went out to clean and generally service the commuter, knowing one or two of my friends were liable to turn up looking for assistance. Got the degreaser out and the first friend appeared suffering with compatibility issues with his new chain set. Got his bike in the stand and was starting to remove chainset when friend number 2 arrives on his son's BSO with a non-ratcheting freehub. Instruct friend 1 what to do and inspect BSO. Make tea. Condemn BSO, it's fubared. Everything needs replacing, even the bell. Buy a new bike for £100 and leave it outside for a year with not even a drop of oil and this is the result. Hardly a surprise it's knackered.
Back to friend number 1 and his old Holdsworth. New chainset has insufficient offset, so, work out what bottom bracket he needs then reassemble, minus inner ring as temporary lash up.
Have a beer.
Finally got to start on my bike. Cleaned it, stripped cleaned and greased the front hub. Light fading so called it a day, finish mine tomorrow.0 -
After the John Deer* tractor was delivered on the 23rd I build it up and realised I don't have any grease/chainlube/anti seize. So yesterday I went out and got al that. Took the JD into the dining room (gf at work) and stripped it again. For shits and gigles I took of some of the shiny Ritchey Classic parts from the District and put them on the JD just to see how the silver would look instead of the black :x . I'm now looking for Ritchey parts for sale so I can tart up both bikes. The District has to make do with it's original seatpost/seat/stem for now. I'm not sure if I'm going with a flatbar or a dropbar on the JD anymore. Ritchey do a very pretty 10degree flatbar in silver  and (bb7 aren't in yet) I've been having fun with the flatbar setup as well.
*The green and yeller paint on the WTF remind me of JD0 -
Put the new halo aerorage wheels on the commuter and took it for a test ride. Definitely lighter than the previous ones, steering is faster, quicker up hills and they do a good job of smoothing the road. Very nice

Oh, and replaced the jockey wheels that had about half an inch side to side play with some ceramic ones.0

Took off the Marathon Winters and replaced with Delta Cruisers. Not great tyres, but they're what I've got. You may thank/blame me for the frosts/ice in January.Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.0

...and just taken those off, nipped to the not-quite-so-LBS for some 'cross tyres. Fitted those instead. Apparently tomorrow's ride might involve a little off-road.Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.0 -

I use them on my Dawes (mainly because they are cheap and gumwall!) - actually, they seem OK to me. They don't last as long as other tyres but then they cost less and still are good for fending off punctures. For a commuting tyre they are fine!Faster than a tent.......0 -

Yeah, fair enough. They've been (touch wood) totally reliable for me too - I'm being unfair by comparing them to 23c race tyres!Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.0 -
i've just spent the day fitting this little pile of stuff to the other halfs tri bike.

I hope your other half apppreciates, and their performance can justify, it (then again you wouldn't have bought it if you didnt think it would, would you? )Invacare Spectra Plus electric wheelchair, max speed 4mph0 -

yeah, all new stuff. i thought the wheel was quite good value at £650, it was a couple of hundred quid cheaper than it rival's.0 -
Fitted a new front tiagra 4500 DR to the commuter. I noticed that it doesn't have the two bolts that used to work loose and make the cage droop down and catch on the big sprocket like on the old 4400 ones.
Yesterday I sorted the indexing problem I'd created on the rear DR when I put the new wheels on. I'd put the cable on the wrong side of the pinch bolt causing it to over index as it went through the gears. Park tools website gave me the clue as to where I'd gone wrong.0 -

What's the Di2 like ?
just pocket change in the bottle, as for the di2, she's not had the chance to ride it in anger yet but it's nice to work with, only gripe was that the front wire harnes is a tad long, there's a lot to hide under the tape.0 -
Did a 23 mile commute with a loaded 3 point rack that should have been a 4 point rack, the rattle at mile 2 was a dead giveaway In replacing the bolt I added a rear light mount on the rack for my MJ818.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Started the Christmas break thinking I had plenty of time to pull my bike apart, give everything a good service then put it all back together. Just thrown it all back together not having done half of it as I have to get to work tomorrow and am about to go to a 50th birthday bash so have run out of time.0

I'm only a 1/3 of the way through today's list of fettling and the heavens open AGAIN but this time with the mother of all hail storms - my road & garden is now white !!! :shock:Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

We had snow on and off since 10pm last night. Couple of inches or so settled - wet, horrid, slushy stuff.
Renewed the pads on the Cube Reaction Race and generally gave it the once-over and cleaned it up. Then went out into the muddy forest and got it filthy!ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
Replaced single chainring on my dad's bike with new triple chainset, plus front mech and new shifter. All seems to work very nicely, should help him up those hills!
Also found the courage to finally drill some holes in the frame of my 'touring' bike (actually a cheap hybrid that's been heavily modified over the years) and whack some rivnuts in there for additional bottle cages. Much happier with having three bottles than one!- - - - - - - - - -

Meh. Was cleaning my bike and noticed a piece has sheared of the front derailleur.
It's lost its springyness and doesn't return now, which means I can't shift down. I didn't notice this for a week...so anyway, I might fit a new one, or just leave it in the big gear forever0 -
Finally cleaned up the 105 drive train (yes complete drive train) ready for sale. Any takers?!What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?0

Commuter cleaned (just in time for this morning's wet roads ) and lubed, brakes adjusted and steering column cut down.0

All I need to do is find out where the slight rubbing sound is comign from from the FD like it's not trimmed even with a straight chain line arghh.0 -

I had knocked the cable adjuster somehow, probably when giving it a good clean and lube, it's fine again now, I have noticed that this ultegra std chain set vs a compact 105 it gets noisier when a bit dirty0 -
The front tyre now matches the rear, both wheels shod with Conti Gatorskins and the rear wheel will be stopped with Swissstop Greens. Test time will be at 21:00I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Well I've done it now; I've just fitted the bike computer I got for Christmas (without the HR monitor, not a good idea with the pacemaker). Spun the wheel a few times and it a) registered movement and b) didn't say I did the speed of light so it appears set up okay. Now I get to find out how slow I actually am :oops:0
