    Don't. Like. Change.
    FCN 2-4.

    "It stays down, Daddy."
    "Exactly."
  • New brake blocks or rather swapping from the old roadie since I don't use it. lot better braking!

Sorted out the rattle I was getting from the front bit of the rear crud guard that was hitting the band of the FD and realigned the rear brakes as I had to space it out from the frame slightly to allow the crud to fit with minimal noise
  • Replaced an octalink BB and non-series crankset with Hollowtech II and Deore. New cassette and chain too, amazing how much better the shifting is with a new chain.
  • New chain and rear sprocket on the fixed. Flipped the chain ring as well to even out the wear. Much smoother action this morning

Some Carradice Klickfix Pannier Hooks from the Haribo shop, upgrading my 17yr old Super C bags to suit the 10mm rack I'm using now.

Fitted these to one of the bags over the weekend with no problems though the new hooks were a little loose in the alu channel but with the self tapper screw they are secure though I did have to use three hooks to stop the bag moving back and forth.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Removed and cleaned cassette and both chain rings - replaced inner 36t ring with an ally 34t (some killer climbs on my commute!), replaced chain with new hg73. Gave the rest of the bike a thorough clean and serviced anything that needed it. Bike looks and feels new again, cant wait for Monday!

Stuck some knobb;ies on the old rigid MTB in case the snow is still here on Monday. Also tried to fix the front shifter that was slipping. Cold fingers didn't help, not realising the large nut had a reverse thread helped less.

Replaced the air in one of my tubes, not through choice I might add :( When replacing the air in the tube I found the front v-brake stiff to move by hand but OK when the brake lever is pulled so stripped and lubed that tonight.

  • Swapped suspension and rigid fork back and forth as i can't make my mind up! Same with stem length. I know i don't NEED suspension but i want it, but its heavy, but its fun, but you have to drag it up hills, but its bouncy...

Spring broke on the front disc brake, got a hydraulic off chain reaction for half price so that's going on... Still a v brake on the back so its a bit overkill but hey, new frame is on the list for summer... :D

I washed my Gore jacket last week and lost the plastic tab that goes into the zip base and had the zip open a couple of times so added some cyanoacrylate to it and filed the excess off.

bolted the chain-ring on my fixie back on, tightened the headset, pumped up the tyres ready for a hard, fast and flat 40 miles this morning. Woke up to snow. :x
  • Bought a chain wear indicator on Wednesday. Bought a new chain Friday. Changed an extremely worn out and slipping Shimano chain to a KMC chain on Saturday.

Cleaned and fettled the commuter. Blimey Avid BB7s are easy to tinker with -- thanks meanredspider for the hint to look at the Volagi video on Youtube. Switched over to Marathon Winters as the commutes are likely to by icy.

A silent bike is a thing of beauty. Not that the Winters are silent..
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

Fitted the new chain and cassette to the Kona, all seems to work beautifully now. Can't be sure as I rode the MTB in today.
Fettling with cold fingers is grim, might get some Mechanix gloves or something similar.
  • Resorted to the LBS for the freehub on my Cube Reaction. Seems as though the Sun Ringle Ryde XMB ones are made of cheese as it's failed after less than 1000 miles

Question is, do I have another cheese one fitted or go for broke with a Hope or something similar?

Had a bloke telling me that my Winters were quite noisy, I told him it wasn't the tyres and that I was being chased by a swarm of wasps.

Go for a Hope one. You haven't posted in the 'stuff I bought' thread for a couple of hours. The rate you're going you'll be the next ITB.
I know, I'm just jealous of your new toy

    That's quite understandable :wink::D

Think I will go for the Hope. I like my Cube and I can't see me changing it for a while (if, for no other reason, that I'm still leasing it under the stupid extended CTW scheme - thanks Mr Tax Man  ) I hear that the Hope hubs are very noisy. Might mask the noise of the Ice Spikers...

A friend of mine has a Hope hub on a very nice Cotic Soul. They are quite noisy, but do seem good. They seem to be something people love or hate, bit of a Marmite jobby.
    Why can't I do smileys?

why does it always go wrong when i do my own bike work?

so tonight i stripped and regreased my front hub on my racing 3... it now doesnt run QUITE as smoothly as before but that might be the extra grease in there now however there was a bit left over. as per usual.

Fitted a couple of new chainrings to the Kona and adjusted the front mech. Rode it around tthe block and combined with the chain and cassette I fitted last week the drivetrain is completely silent. And there was no snow to mask anything.
As I was putting my tools away a couple were walking past and the bloke asked if I was a bike mechanic. Part of me thinks I should have asked if he needed anything doing, but it was about-2 and I was cold, so I said no and rushed inside.

Even though I have 6 brand new tubes, I've repaired the 6 that were in need of repair.

Cleaned up the front mech after getting stuck in the big ring. Still way to much play on it so I ordered a new one anyway.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Sorry, changing winter tyres at lunchtime as I'm fed up with the drag and winter's ended, right?

Finally got around to fitting the new Koolstop Tectonic canti pads/cartridges to the Pompino.
Still bedding them in so can't comment on performance so far, but the gold cartridge holders look bling :-)
