Refurbed rear derailer is back on, I've got all my gears back! Replaced the outers for the rear. Going to wrap electrical tape over the one that corroded last time, see if I can get more than a year out of it this time.
Moved my rear light after if failed the first time out in the rain.I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0 -
Thanks Des and UE. Bottom bracket changed and all working as intended. I stuck the widest axle* bottom bracket in, adjusted the limit screws and cable tension and it's all hunky dory. You'd have thought the LBS that originally changed the cranks would have known this. Off to the pub shortly to receive payment for doing the job.
* should be spindle I now realise having read up on Sheldon brown's site0 -
I took a Knog Frog off my bike and affixed it to my boy's Spiderman bike this afternoon with no problems whatsoever.

Used said cone spanners to fix the little wobble in front wheel. I was already so used to it that the then bike felt weird this morning for first 10-15 minutes, very odd.

loose bottom bracket cups?
grease pedals?
chain ring bolts?Keeping it classy since '830 -
retensioned fixed chain. Attempted to change brake blocks and managed to round off the tiny hex bolt that holds them in the shoe. Off to shop this lunchtime for new blocks and shoesroad0

grease pedals? - done that and its not them
chain ring bolts? - hmmmm, will have a look at thatLe Cannon [98 Cannondale M400] [FCN: 8]

Having replaced 2 bottom brackets for friends recently mine started making noise yesterday. Sods Law I suppose. Had a quick look last night, tiny bit of play. So I optimistically took the left hand crank off, greased the splines and reassembled everything. Silence this morning, phew.0

Dis-assembled and re-greased the left pedal to see if it stops the click when I pedal hard. Managed to get away without using the pd40 you need to remove the spindle by wrapping kitchen roll round the lock bolt and just used strength of grip 8)
Will find out on Monday if it has cured it or whether I need to look at the bottom bracket.0 -
ooh, good tip on the pedal grip technique as mine needs re-greasing...
Replaced worn triple crank (decathlon brand 'Ounce' jobbie) with new Tiagra double, plus BB, and fitted Dura Ace double front der. Can confirm that shimano 2300 triple STI will happily bond with the DA d/r (use first 2 clicks of STI for the rings, wind in the limit on the d/r and 3rd click no longer accessible) and Tiagra double crankB'Twin Sport 1

Wow. Everyone taken two weeks off?
Just put 6 bike hooks in the wall of my garage. Unfortunately I now have two empty hooks. Oh well, I know the rules - I needed an autumn bike anyway.Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.0 -

careful now its a slippery slope, i ran out of wall space so bought a roof hook ..... 2 years ago, it's still in the box :oops:Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

I spent most of the day assembling my frankenbike project. Just need a seatpost shim and clamp. Also replaced the slipping front shifter on the EPO's bike to get brownie points.0

Fiddled with the cassette on the Kona, but chain still slipping, so need a new one.FCN 2-4.

Trued the rear wheel on the SS, turned 3 spokes one way and two the other and replaced the brake blocks. What I can't understand about the old blocks is that they wore differently on the same wheel, one side was smooth whereas the other still had a little bit of meat left :?I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Had a pre winter tidy of my garage, not sure why I have four brand new front mechs, none of which fit my bikes.
Also looked at my still in the box roof hook, still in the box.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Last weekend on the Tricross:
Replaced bottom bracket.
Replaced cassette - from an 11-32 to a 12-25 at last...
Replaced chain.
Replaced a broken left hand STI 4503 shifter with a 6603.
New bar tape.
Straightened out a slight kink in rear wheel.
This weekend on Tricross:
Tightened bottom bracket beyond doubt that it will come loose as it started knocking/rattling towards the end of last week. Felt solid this morningFCN 2 to 80 -
Replaced the pads in my brake blocks. Lot easier than I thought. The tiny Allen bolt was easy to get out and the old pads just slid out. No need to jam a screwdriver into my hand like I did the last time I did this procedure. Bike tech has obviously moved on since I was 8.0

Are any of them for an MTB? I've nearly finished my frankenbike and whilst the rear mech is a lovely XT unit the front is a crappy Acera. If you have anything appropriate would you want to sell?0 -
Had a busy fettling week, with mixed results.
Sunday:
Washed and lubed both bikes
Re-indexed road bike gears, so I can use bottom gear without the mech brushing against the spokes when out of the saddle
Replaced front brake pads
Replaced a spoke on the MTB rear
Tuesday
Replaced rear pads on road bike
Rear hub on MTB was loose - stripped it and re-greased (I think I'd accidentally slackened one of the hub locknuts when removing the disc to replace the spoke)
Thursday
Fixed a slow puncture on MTB. In the process, I found another broken spoke on the rear, so fixed that. During that, I found that the lower jockey wheel was flopping about, so stripped it. 1100 miles and the sealing plates have completely worn away (it's a BBB one with bearings).
Also found that the front disc was rubbing on the caliper, so took it off to clean up a sticky piston. While it was off, took the fork legs off and found them full of water. During this, the newly repaired front tyre exploded, shredding the tube and removing 6" of the bead, and my eardrums.0 -
New crank and chain on my sons bike, new seat post on mine, no more seat wobble. Gave it a good clean and lubeafter using it to apply a mud tan to my legs.I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0

Re arranged the garage so four of my bikes are now on the walls and all my spare road wheels are hanging from the celling 8)
Degreased the drive trains on the CX, MTB and winter bikes and replaced the missing computer magnet from the MTB.
Put air in all the families bikes, ready for the little ones first cycle to school tomorrow.
Just need to dump the old dishwasher and fit a wall mounted tool board.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.

Full drive train clean and degrease, the lower jockey wheel felt very rough so that was removed taken apart cleaned greased up and refitted.
Also fitted a 18650 powered p7 torch for a bit more oomph on the front along with the rsp flashing led I had there already, luckily I can run it on lowish power tilted down so I don't dazzle but it still makes me a lot more visible.0 -
Fitted a ulta thaser 3.0 LED light to the virage.

Bled the back brake on my MTB. Scoffed at the prices for official kits from bike shops. Bought a 25ml syringe in the chemist for £1 and used LHM in place of Shimano mineral oil, bit of windscreen washer hose from work. Bargaintastic, worked a treat. Now the front feels spongy in comparison.0

LHM off of Citroen Hydractive suspension?I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0

I've left the BSO chained up in some side street for the last 4 days and its still there! Although the rusty chain is now at the point were its setting hard, it did make popping it back on a joy of easy clean roadside fettling this evening.
Back wheel now has almost as much lateral play as forward motion, odd sensation of just about to fall over then Back up.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.

Decided suspension fork was too heavy and swapped it for the rigid with the front tyre nice and squidgy instead. Went to that london and was easily influenced so switched the swoopy bar for the narrow one. Bad idea (plymouth, 40 mph downhills..!) Went with the only as yet untried combination, wide high riser with long stem. Bike now looks like it wants to jump off things going 'wheee!!!'
Am working through how many different ways i can attach lights to myself so i can still take the off-road route home in the evening and wondering if my chances of ending up on crimewatch after being murdered in the spooky woods are higher or lower than those of ending on the travel news after being squished by a bus if i go via the road...0 -

Cleaned the Korma Jake commuter at the weekend and tried to get the gears working a bit better. Cleaned and lubed and still not right. Can't get the indexing right. It either shifts up ok, or down ok. The happy medium where both should work results in neither working. Chain and cassette look a bit tired so sorting that might help.0
