Fettling.= doing something in the hope that it will go ok and be a working item when finished...yup !
well i managed to remove old cassette/chain/crankset and then replaced them while using the usual special tools to do so.chuffed!!? almost, still have to battle with the front mech as when i get to the 6th and 7 th rear gear it grinds a little,,,i think its a case of finetuning as in front mech position,2 screw adjustment and cable tension.
things go 1 way or the other either grind chain on 6/7 gear or adjust for that and it wont change to the small chain ring.....real fun!
oh also put on some barends,...now all i need is a dry day to go ride!! and give it a real test ride to see if anything falls off.
And found that my crank extractor comes apart and has an 8mm hex drive, which i used to tighten my new crank bolts...i do have various allen keys ,,,but an 8mm one? just lucky i realised it .
so you see when you think something is easy and straight forward, the chances are your just kidding yourself :roll:0 -
After finding that I had a nsty grinding/creaking noise coming from the BB yesterday I stripped it down to the bare frame and reassembled the BB with several pints of grease which means a silent BB and now a silent bike which is also partly down to using the better set of wheels.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

I've just pulled my crank out of my BB to confirm that the bearings are dead and sure enough the LH bearing is as rough as a badger's rectum - new BB on the way.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0

This mornings fettling will be :-
1/ Clean down commuter bike
2/ fit new chain and cassette
3/ clean and regrease headset
4/ fit 2x new marathon plus tyres (and hopefully not have to move mudguards)
5/ adjust brakes to make them work properly again
6/ repack and adjust mountain bike rear wheel bearings
7/ fit new mtb rear tyre
This is what happens when I put things off for too long.Twostage wrote:There seems to be a growing trend of people posting what fettling they are going to do rather than done. According to clause 4, paragraph 2, subsection 3a of the fettling thread rules fettling must already have been undertaken, preferably with photographic evidence available should it be required.
As per another thread I've replaced the bearings on the headset of my alu road bike. It now has the same number top and bottom and the bottom set are not dry and covered in rust.
ok hands up
had to replace the chainrings as well hence the delay

finally got round to taking new workstand (Ribble one) out of box and putting weekend bike on it...found holding it on the seat upright rather than the top tube was more convenient.. so good to work at a sensible height, how I managed before without one I don't know... and great to be able to turn bike upside down and clean underneath properly...
cleaned bike, degreased chain (but broke degreaser so need to buy a new one - suggestions?), lubed everything that needed lubing and fitted Garmin cadence sensor.
All ready for club ride tomorrow...Invacare Spectra Plus electric wheelchair, max speed 4mph0 -
Have recently had my first proper fettle! Invested in a workstand and have since taken apart the headset, given it a clean and a regrease and this week have replaced the rear mech.
Ive given it a good old indexing with much reading of the bike radar forums and I can say it was a sucess!! Cheers!!0 -
Built myself a dynamo front wheel. Was quite worried when I got the hub about how notchy it felt. Dynamo hubs have a load of powerful magnets in to make the electricity, which when you're turning the hub means there is a definite notch to get over.
However, now it's built into a wheel and I've given it a test run, I can say that the notchiness isn't a problem when riding, except for a slight vibration through the bars at multiples of 6 mph. The hub itself, is about Ultegra quality, so it rolls very nicely indeed, and with fewer spokes than my old wheel, it actually feels quite light. The light itself hasn't arrived yet, so I can't comment on how it will feel when generating.
I love building wheels, me. 8)0 -

Incidentally the correct term for the stiction caused by the magnets is is 'cogging'.Invacare Spectra Plus electric wheelchair, max speed 4mph0 -

Cogging... I like that, remembered for future use.
The dynamo (a Shimano DH-3N80 ) is rated at 3W, more than enough for a decent LED headlight. It's apparently about 70% efficient, so the draw will be about 5W. This equates to approximately 1 foot of climbing per mile. If you can notice the difference, you're a real princess after all. There is talk on the ninternets that the drag reduces slightly when the ligh's turned on.
Really looking forward to not charging batteries every day. Sticking to battery rear lights for the moment, because I'm a tart and the wires would ruin the look if they stretched to the back. :oops:0 -
Changed the front iner tube. Last patch didn't hold.
Applied a temporary fix to a front cartridge V-Brake pad to secure the pad (metal clip missing) replaced with bent wire.
Re indexed rear deraileur again.
Rode ~28miles without incedent or injury.I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0 -
Refitted rear mudguard (needed some bending as wheel is a bit further back with smaller cog on the fixed).
Unwrapped one side of the bar and rewrapped as the tape was getting loose.
Stuffed shoes with paper...

Attached new dynamo headlight to the new dynamo wheel. Rode in with it on this morning to try it out. Can't say that I noticed much drag from it, whether it was on or off. One thing I do like is the heat sink/glare shield thingy on the roof of the light, couldn't much tell that it was on from above, which bodes well for not getting blinded when it's pitch black.
All good resistance training for the winter.0 -

Went for the B&M IQ Cyo, apparently the same LED and reflector as the one you have, but cheaper construction and slightly less bright, less spendy too. Am liking not having to remove the thing every time I park in the bike shed. Gave it a quick try in the dark last night, it's a different kettle of fish to my torches - instead of the one, bright spot and a load of less bright spill, there's a load of even illumination covering the road.

New BB on my Kona, but having trouble getting pedals off for my nice new green DMR ones to go on. Tried bleding the SLX brakes without sucess, need to try again.... determined to do correctly! Think the pads may be comtaminated also, so will replace them."Encyclopaedia is a fetish for very small bicycles"0

fitting my old HS33 magura on my hardtail, managed to fudge it up....does that count as fettling?Keeping it classy since '830

Half an hour to attach new SKS front mudguard last night. Much cutting of stays had to be done (twice x 4 as I had measured wrong). Bone dry feet during this morning's downpour, but sodden ass. Ran out of time for the rear, which will be attached this evening.0

Can't believe no ones 'fettled' for over a week!
Anyway, today I cleaned about a kilo of crud off the commuter bike, it'll go faster now - even took the wheels off and cleaned inside the SKS'
Also new brake blocks (fronts were non-existent already despite being changed in June) and fitted a Garmin GSC-10 speed/cadence sensor (now got one on both bikes).Invacare Spectra Plus electric wheelchair, max speed 4mph0 -
I plan to fettle tomorrow, got a squeaking saddle/ seat post and the bike needs a clean, degrease and re-lube."If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got."

Had a cracking cycle down from Longniddry to Haddington and back, took it nice and easy on the way down and blasted it back for a laugh, poor wife could not keep up... .
Then I made her stick a jacket on the seat of the car as I was not wanting here muddy trousers messing up my car seats..

I fixed a puncture on my Brompton on Friday. What was fun - those Schwalbe Kojak tyres really don't like to come off. I nipped a finger and it bled for ages (not helped by the fact I'm on Warfarin).0
-
And my bit of fettling aside sticking air in the tyres..... I washed the bike for the first time in a couple of years, I've been using it as my daily but it was only until today I realised after the ride that it would need a clean, just need to get a new bottle holder on and I'm sorted again!

serviced front/rear mech and casette on the wifes commuter to try and get rid of the 'noise' she was hearing, turns out, casette is worn..FCN 120
