Finally gave the Alfine on my mountain bike an oilbath...don't know why I put it off for so long, wasn't as horrendous as I expected0

Switched the brakes blocks from the nice bike to the commuter.
Annoying creak in the BB area on the nice bike. Checked the pedals by swapping pedals. Not them. Soaked the BB cups in oil. Creak gone for now.FCN 2-4.

Put bar tape ona road bike for the first time this week Wasnt as difficult as I thought it was going to be either. There is no secret ingredient...0

Gave the bike a good clean and then replaced the front Tiagra brake blocks with a cartridge set.
Either the new pads are much much better or the back end of the bike's learnt to levitate. :shock:0 -

TT season is over (sigh) so I took the aero bars off the good bike and raised the handlebars. Then took it out for a 40 mile ride to test it.0

Yeah I noticed the title after typing it
Anyhow today I stuck a new bottle holder on the bike today and shortly away to fit my lights back on to the bike as the mornings are a bit darker when I commute to work now.

Cleaned and regreased my gritty bottom bracket. Hopefully that will stop the clunking coming from the front end.Mud - Genesis Vapour CCX

Cleaned and regreased my front hub, rather funny to still find unused lithium grease in there after over 10 years of use. Note to self though. Get proper spanners. Using a monkey wrench and an adjustable spanner don't quite work on wheels... There is a little bit of play in the wheel but not enough to notice in normal use (turns beautifully now though with no grinding). Greased and tighten seatpost and saddle and its wonderful not to have 2 of the normal creaks. Slightly changed saddle horizontalness which felt slightly odd but might keep it to see how it goes. Saddle raised about 1 or 2 mm and feels better too. Chain cleaned and regreased. Front brake tightened. Feels so much better!Le Cannon [98 Cannondale M400] [FCN: 8]

This thread is making me feel bad. Poor bike is suffering lack of loving. But then again so are the car, motorbike and house. Must stop reading forums and do something.0

Finally tackeled the creaking on my Van Nicholas Yukon. It seems the bearings had gone on the Shimano Hollowtech II bottom bracket (after 20 months of commuting 15 miles a day since new). Despising an Evan's mechanics advice that I need to use a torque wrench I changed the cups in around 20 minutes. All for the princely sum of £25. Another mechanical mystery on the bike has been conquered!0

I replaced a spoke!
Sounds trivial, but it's the first time I've touched the spokes in 6 years of commuting. Luckily the wheel was still true so all I needed to do was tighten the new one and job done.
Only problem is the new spoke is silver, and all the others are black...0 -
New cassette (first time fitting one) and chain.
Top tip, allow running in time before going out on a long ride. Indexing went from fine after fitting and during the short test rides around the block to being a pain a day later when I was on a long ride and some miles had been put in. Got it sorted as I went, but wasn't really the right time for it.0 -
Adjusted (corrected) my saddle angle and moved the chainring from the inside to the outside of the spider to increase the clearance between the chainring and the chainstay. Moved the spacers on the rear axle to correct the new chainline.FCN 3: Raleigh Record Ace fixie-to be resurrected sometime in the future

Fitted my new and beautifull polished Ritchey Classic stem to replace the boxy, ugly, black Kona one I used for sizing. Used some of my gf's nail polish remover to remove three of the four ritchey logos, looks better without. Now I only need to polish the handlebars, or get the Ritchey Classic one...0

Treated my Allez to some caresses from Baby wipes in readiness for tomorrows ride to Wales for the ToB, it'll be bad enough walking up Cheddar Gorge but I can't be doing it with a dirty bike.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Fitted new jockey wheels to my old derailer and gave it the once over. Next step is to put it back on and re-do the gear outers now all the bits have turned up.
The ferule above the back wheel has corroded and snapped, contributing to shifting problems, 7 speed cassette with only 5 gears available, temporary derailer doesn't play well with my shifter. Was wondering how to winter proof the ferules any ideas?I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0 -
I added some 3m reflective tape I bought 4 years ago to strategic points on my frame its about 5mm wide and its to be found in the motobike bit of halfords, it's for putting round the rim of wheels on motorbikes, I couldnt do that on mine due to the braking track obviouslt so placed it on the back of the seat stays and on the downtube etc to blend in with the existing graphics, glows nicely when a light is shone on it0

Just fitted my Hope District rear light. Massively bright, pretty much have it pointing at the floor so as not to blind anyone.

New brake blocks on my bike was the easy bit for me. Also had a look at a mates mountain bike as it wouldn't shift onto the granny ring.
He had the cranks and chainwheels replaced by an LBS a couple of years ago. It has never changed onto the granny ring since. I took a look and with the cable slackened off and the low limit screw undone all the way the shifter can't get far enough over.
Tried some other cranks from another MTB and they sit further out and it all works. Unfortunately I can't give him those cranks as they belong to another mates bike waiting for a new bottom bracket.
The other wierd thing was the square hole was in a different position. 1 set with the crank vertical the hole had vertical and horizontal sides. The other with the crank vertical the hole was like a diamond. So you couldn't use the left of one with the right of the other.
Do cranks have varying degrees of offset? Any ideas?0 -
Wrong axle length in the BB. What chainset is it?
Surprised he can't feel it as a difference in foot position if it's that big TBH.- - - - - - - - - -

It's a Suntour chainet. i thought about changing the bottom bracket for a longer axle. But why would the other, unbranded, chainset work ok?
He did get the chainset replaced to fit larger rings. Do road chainsets have different offsets? It's probably about an 8mm difference.0 -
Different chainsets do require different axle lengths. Just take a look at the Shimano UN54 listings on CRC or Wiggle; there are loads of different lengths, and you will have to select one to match the chainset. Have a read: http://sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html- - - - - - - - - -

Square taper? My old SunTour (road) chainset used a proprietary taper for the BB axel, meaning that it wouldn't sit right with a bog-standard Shimano BB, add to that the potential wrong-axel length and you can get quite a difference. Campag BBs would work at a push.0
