Bike is in desperate need of a clean, i hope it doesn't rain tomorrow.
Cleaned the drivetrain before resetting the front derailleur, what a pain that was too. :?
Hope to have some more parts for my Force groupset soon so that i can actually start using it! :(

Cleaned, lubed, changed wheels and brake blocks.

Indexed gears, but still not right. Limit screws need adjusting as well but it got dark.

Might sort it in the morning, but that might just tun it into a bigger bag of spanners before the club run.

Swapped brake blocks from carbon specific to normal for tomorrow's club run.

As I was testing the gears, the rear gear cable snapped within the shifter. (Good job that didn't happen the last time I rode it i.e. on the Marmotte.) Had to dig out the bit remaining within the shifter. That was a bit fiddly...

Replaced the gear cable and checked the gears. Seem fine, but will probably be a bunch of @rse under force tomorrow.

The rear brake caliper is sticking, so it's not releasing fully on the non-drive side. Had to wrap insulating tape around the cable and the top of the seat stay and seat tube to maintain the tension so it releases.

Swapped the speedo over from the commuter.

Having spent the last few nights cleaning the drivetrain I've now swapped freewheels on my Singlecross. There is no way the chain can jump what feels like a tooth on the chainring, it has to be the freewheel.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Seviced some very old union pedals so my youngest can ride my MTB. What a fiddley job. 26 tiny bearings each pedal, five of which ended up on the gravel path  Which I amazingly found.
They spin freely now rather than grinding :)

Fitted bars, brakes and levers to my work-in-progress singlespeed.

Also fitted a rack, but that's mostly because it was laying around and this way I have somewhere to put it.

I'm also realising that the issue with building up a bike from spare parts you have lying around is that generally there was a reason you replaced those parts in the first place. Going to need a new bottom bracket and possibly pedals before too long, also the wheels I fitted are on their last legs.

    We'll see how it lasts.

The Roubaix was due some fettling, and it turned it a bit of a strip, clean/degrease and rebuild. Took everything but the bottom bracket off (wow the frame's light without forks, derailleurs or brakes), cleaned everything and did a passable job at my first bar taping effort. Also recabled, then did it again when I realised I'd put the back brake on the right  - thank $deity I did the back first. Shame I'm driving to a customer tomorrow...
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

What a weekend. Gave both of my bikes a bit of love and affection from a bottle of lube. Resurrected another old BSO from my Dad's garden (that's 3) for my sister and her kids to use. Also fixed a couple of things on the car, pulled the washing machine apart to fix a leak, fitted the swing arm to my Bonneville and re-hung a kitchen door at my parents.
Lots of fettling time as I've been sat around re-loading everything onto my PC after changing the hard drive on Friday.
I'm looking forward to a rest at work tomorrow.

Then swapped the one sided pedal cages round as I'd put the left on the right and vice versa.

Note to self - next time when disassembling two objects put the bits in two piles not one so you know what goes with what.

My new Bontager bar tape arrived this morning and I also managed ot blag some Dura Ace cable guides so tonight I retaped the lo-pro bars on my Singlecross and added another gel pad where my hands rest.

Over the weekend I've got to realign one brakeblock, find out why the air won't stay in the tube and lube the rear brake cable which has been getting a little stickier ever since the wet ride back in June.

    Fitted one of these beasts!

    un54.jpg

Last one has lasted about 5 and half years - well, I woudldn't say it's lasted, it's been wobbling for about 5 months. :)

Anyway, spent last weekend trying to remove the old one and didn't have any luck. I was fearful of breaking the frame and/or removing the teeth on the bb-removal tool.

Went to my folks today, still no luck at first.

Then I adopted another recommended approach.

    1. Put bb-removal tool in vice
    2. Put frame ontop
    3. Get someone to hold frame down in tool.
    4. Turn frame with little pinky :)

This has to be the best way to remove a troublesome BB, it turned so damm easy.

The new BB now makes it feel like a new bike :D:D

Fitted new white toupe saddle, went for a short spin only to discover I hadn't tightened the rails enough.

Raised seat post again!!! WTF is going on with that?

In preparation for the end of my holiday this week and going back to work Monday...

I fitted new handelbar tape to the Langster (for the first time ever, wasn't as hard as I was expecting it to be). Plus replaced standard brake blocks for alloy cartridges and salmon Koolstops.

Also, cleaned and lubed drivetrain - so ready to roll.

    :D
  • This mornings fettling will be :-

    1/ Clean down commuter bike
2/ fit new chain and cassette
    3/ clean and regrease headset
4/ fit 2x new marathon plus tyres (and hopefully not have to move mudguards)
5/ adjust brakes to make them work properly again
6/ repack and adjust mountain bike rear wheel bearings
7/ fit new mtb rear tyre

This is what happens when I put things off for too long.

There seems to be a growing trend of people posting what fettling they are going to do rather than done. According to clause 4, paragraph 2, subsection 3a of the fettling thread rules fettling must already have been undertaken, preferably with photographic evidence available should it be required. :)

As per another thread I've replaced the bearings on the headset of my alu road bike. It now has the same number top and bottom and the bottom set are not dry and covered in rust.

Removed the bars from my road bike, removed the bars from my District. Put the bars from road bike on District. Put second hand Shimano Aero brake levers on bars. Wrapped bars with new Fizik tape, voila: District with drop bars :) . Adjusted and lubed rear brake and took it for a spin, pure belt driven single speed bliss.

Swapped the wheels on the Allez, now have R500s on it with Blizzards in red and got the spoke nipple out of the rim of the factory fit wheels with the broken spoke. Peed off with the wheels as I can't get the straight pull spokes, struggled last time I broke one. A new hub this time I think.
