I was trying to get an old MTB working for my niece that's over from Italy for the next couple of months. Had to change a couple of cables, lube things up and adjust the bottom bracket. Bottom bracket utterly siezed. Lock ring came off easily, I'm going to try two lock rings tightened against each other and more brute force along with heat.
Whilst struggling with the siezed cup a friend came by with a wobbly bottom bracket that was done and adjusted in less than a minute. Amazing how quick these jobs are when all the right tools are to hand.
Also bought a new MTB frame for my 12 year old son as he keeps growing. We're going to have to stop feeding him.

    1. Replaced the compact on the commuter with a 52/39.
    2. New chain.
    3. Cleaned it.
    4. New front wheel (new rear wheel following soon).

    Heh heh.

I wore the 50 out, so the chain was slipping rather badly. I missed out on some juicy SCR action last night because of it. Can't have that, can we?

Cranks and bottom bracket off the Pompino for a wipe down and tighten-up. Hopefully means "au revoir" to the irritating squeak that developed last week.

Decided to clean the chain as it has rained the last few commutes. Noticed the back wheel was making a nasty grinding noise. Took the hub off and found that water had got into the freehub. Quick trip to the LBS for a 10mm Allen key (or more accurately a full set with the biggest being 10mm), strip off the freehub and rinse it out with gt85. Re-grease of the bearings on that side, re-assembled and it it spins quietly now. :D
It clicks when free-wheeling now. Before it was silent. The free hub must have been gunked up for years supressing the clicks. I suppose I'll get used to it until it gets clogged again.
The clicking is reducing already :D
    Did a 66 miler and it's now back to it's silent state :D .

Adjusted the rear brake when I noticed one side was way closer to the rim than the other.

    Easiest adjustment ever!!

Is this the start of the big ring wars II ...?

Finished my TOBM triple set up, according to the route profile it should be +15,000ft of ascent in 120 miles

I've eaten two big pasta dinners already today, time for a nap before one more pasta meal then bed I think :?

    @wayne - nice. 8) You made 2nd Cat yet?

@ITB - after running a compact for the last year, a 52 feels a little odd, almost as if I'm pushing too big a gear.

@cjcp aye, been a 2nd cat for awhile now
@ITB got the frame at an unbelievable price, still have the bmc (bmc was kind enough to send a new replacement frame) IMG_0289.JPG

Noticed my back wheel was bleeding a bit of slime so I thought I'd best have a look. Found this :-

I know slime inners add weight but when you can carry on riding with things like these stuck in your tyres its worth it.

@Wayne - nice one. 1st Cat next year?

Back on topic: fitted Cateye wireless to the eldest's bike to see what sort of mileage she racks up. PowerTap next maybe. Too much?

@Wayne verrrry nice 8) I saw a couple of those today on the TOBM

@cjcp yeh but a double makes so much more sense for commuting, as for the triple I can say enough what a good idea that was, today's sportive wouldn't have be possible without it that's for sure.

Left home this morning at 6am, over the start line at 9am ish 8hrs 12mins moving time for 123 miles and god only knows how much climbing, I've never ridden such a hard ride.

BRUTAL but beautiful views and roads (mostly).

After ITB cast a scrutineering eye over my fixe and berating me for some short comings, I have respaced my rear hub and sorted my rear wheel. Next stop a trip to my LBS for some new brake blocks.

Trying to fix the annoying squeak when I put the power down I took the crank and bottom bracket off on the Scott, which necessitated buying a BB tool and an 8mm wrench. The latter annoyingly turned out to actually be a 10mm so had to use a crappy 8mm Allen key on my multi-tool and I found I was out of grease and loctite. Tightened the BB cups and apart from one squeak when out of the saddle up Ranmore it behaved itself on the 100-odd km ride thru the hills yesterday and the commute in this morning. Will buy some grease and loctite and redo them some point this week.

Fixies are boring. Very little to go wrong, so very little fettling done recently.
I think I'll redo the bar tape, just to give myself something to do!

I spent some time trying to save the selection of bikes in my Dad's garden from the last 2 years of neglect so my niece and nephew can ride them whilst they're over for the summer.

Oooh. Let us know how you get on. I might be up that way in October (rain!).

I only did the 101 and that seemed "Proper hard" as Cav would put it. Am very jealous of your triple in hindsight. Definitely my plan for next year. Reminds me of the a I bloke half way round who'd snapped his rear gear cable and had just split his chain to set it up as a single-speed. Wonder if he finished?

After an off caused by a bus driver, me gears have been all over the shop.
A little tinkering revealed the hangers slightly twisted, so £25 later, all cables off, completely reset the H/L screws, cables back on, re-adjusted, now working at 99%.
While sorting that i found my downtube barrel adjusters are both siezed solid. Good soak in WD and i'll leave them for a few days before trying to loosen them, don't want to risk shearing them off..which they probably will anyway.

I strip and lube so many parts of the bike on a regular basis...shame i never thought about the barrel adjusters.

Monday - fitted a new (to me) gatorskin (bought from a BR member, thanks :O) ) on the front. Whilst comparing front/rear cos logo is different on rear gatorskin (rear was a folding version), noticed a spoke broken on the rear.

Tuesday - bought spoke (50p), spoke wrench (£10), cassette lock ring tool (£6) and chain whip (£25)... shocked by prices, but Park Tools so should last. Fitted spoke last night, made surprisingly easy by having the right tools to strip the cassette off. Trued wheel - bit fiddly/tiome consuming but otherwise ok. Cleaned cassette up and refitted all. Had to fractionally adjust DR.

  • Was clearing out the garage a bit this morning, and I thought I'd take my old BSO and a couple of the kids' old bikes to the local tip. They have a section where you can pop them and the local bike recyclers pick them up. When I was there I noticed a bike that was the next size up for my youngest, who's been looking a bit big for hers. I figured that as nobody was looking, and I was already dropping three off, I might just sneak off with it.

Got it home and my five-year-old has spent the past four hours watching me as I cleaned, polished, swapped the brakes off her old bike (I'd bought some decent ones for her old bike, it'd be a shame to lose them), replaced cables, trued the wheels, adjusted brakes, mended a puncture, blown up tyres, oiled the chain and adjusted the saddle.

When I was finally done, she was so excited, and is now the proud owner of a very nice black with pink accents "Hello Kitty" bike. She's taken it for a spin, and confirms that it's brilliant. She also says she's desperate to go out again tomorrow. :D

Adding more superglue to the frame of my fave glasses. They might only be a cheap £5.99 pair from Aldi but they fit my face and don't interfere with the helmet straps. If this 2nd repair fails then its bye-bye time :(
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
