stripped everything down, cleaned, re-greased and put back together.

Then enjoyed 30 squeak, creak - free miles! Aaah, satisfaction. Like a good orgasm  !!!!

Went out to fix the slow puncture from the weekend, spotted that the rear tyre had a gash so binned that & fitted a spare, then stripped & rebuilt the garage door lock as it's been getting more & more difficult to get in lately, then realised that the rear wheel wasn't spinning as smoothly as could be so ended up doing a full strip & rebuild of the rear axle, cassette & freehub. It's a bit smoother but probably needs new bearings, but the freehub is so much quieter with some new grease in there. Google Fulcrum Racing 5 freehub noise and it turns out to be a major gripe. A good clean & bit of grease fixes it.

Fixed the rear mudguard to stop the rattling, I love gaffer tape, is there nothing it can't do!

Took off the Antares saddle and fitted an Arione. Hello old friend, I've missed you.

Think the saddle height from the seat post is higher with the Arione though so will have to find my fitting docs and make some measurements tonight.

My handlebars on my old fixie kept twisting alarmingly even though the clamp was as tight as could be. Drank beer, washed can, cut little rectangle from can and scored it a bit, slipped it under the clamp as a nice bodgy shim. worked like a charm. i am macguyver and a tramp combined.
  • Fitted the tarty White Industries freewheel to the Day One last night.

The Shimano shite one was a real pain to get off, and when I did, I could really see what the winter had done to it. There was absolutely no grease in it whatsoever, all that there had been had turned into crusty, white cheese; no wonder it stopped working when the temperature plunged.

The White Industries one, however looks to be a real, quality piece of kit. Well sealed bearings, and an action so smooth that you'd swear that it was made from ITB's legs. I'm glad I paid the extra, but I'm more glad that I bought it from the US, where it was relatively bargain-priced.

+1 for the build quality of White Industries freewheels.

Last night I replaced a noisy 1/8 KMC chain with a SRAM PC7X which runs on glorious stealth mode 8)

I shall be swapping the square profiled Marathon Plus for a more rounder Schwalbe Blizzard later as cornering on the Marathon Plus was 'interesting'

My alu road bike creaks quite a lot when I'm out of the seat. Must get round to fixing it but I know i'll go through frustration so I'm putting it off.

If you're in spd's don't be surprised if its from cleat-pedal interactions and just sounds like a frame creak . Took me ruddy ages to find it. Now I just grease the pedals once/twice a month where they rub.
Realised it must be the handlebar clamp as literally everything else got dismantled when I re-sprayed it. So removed the bars, cleaned all the crud off the clamp and bars and re-assembled. Creaking now gone, just a clicking sound now that I know is the brake cable outers rubbing against the bars under the handlebar tape. I'll sort that next time I redo the tape.

Decided to clean the chain as it has rained the last few commutes. Noticed the back wheel was making a nasty grinding noise. Took the hub off and found that water had got into the freehub. Quick trip to the LBS for a 10mm Allen key (or more accurately a full set with the biggest being 10mm), strip off the freehub and rinse it out with gt85. Re-grease of the bearings on that side, re-assembled and it it spins quietly now. :D

Fixies are boring. Very little to go wrong, so very little fettling done recently.
I think I'll redo the bar tape, just to give myself something to do!

  • Removed all squeaks and creaks (cleats, handlebar clamp, BB area). Amazing what a dab of grease can do.

Cleaned transmission, degreasing my chain with swarfega (not sure if that's a good idea)..

Tuned my bell to concert pitch. OK, maybe not.

LH MMS Dylan pedal creaking so an on-the-bike strip, white lithium grease and rebuild. Sub 10:10 minutes and smooth as butter.

    I *really* need a workstand.
Cleaned and generally fettled the Roubaix on Sunday, when I noticed the headset felt a bit gritty. Dropped the forks out, clean and repack with fresh grease, and much nicer now.

It clicks when free-wheeling now. Before it was silent. The free hub must have been gunked up for years supressing the clicks. I suppose I'll get used to it until it gets clogged again.

After riding in the rain 2 weeks ago I knew that the chain would need some lube and set about cleaning and lubing the chain but I had to move the bike from where I left it and turned the bars to a grindy-grindy sound from the headset which baffles me as I rode with mudguards. None the less 30 mins later the headset had been stripped, caged bearing degreased, dried and refitted along with some grease.

New wheel arrived, so cassette swapped, inner tubs and tyre on new brake blocks and brakes adjusted good to go!

I took the chain off yesterday cleaned and relubed and now the creaking noise which was embarassing has now gone away, it was the rain I rode through on the way home a few days ago that caused it.

Also took the back wheel off and gave the cassette a damn good clean too, tomorrow the chain set will have the same treatment

Yes, forgot to say my spd's do creak but I just put up with it. I assume it is the plastic surround part of the pedal but I could be wrong.

Damn that's some friend you have there, very nice!

As for me I thought it about time I cleaned the Trek after the very wet Magnificat last month, then went out for a shakedown ride.

All was pretty good until about 10 miles then the creaking started

Anywho! when I got home I was ready to strip the entire bike, clean & re-grease then I thought I'd just check the pedals, so one quick spin later whilst wearing trainers I discovered that once again my Look Keo pedals are the source of yet more annoyance.

As I had the cleaning kit out I gave my wifes bike a chainset degrease - wow! she actually have a silver chain

Degreased the drive train on the CR1.

Fitted guards, a B17 and a child seat to the winter bike so I can take my daughter out. Also attached a note to the handlebars reminding me not to roundhouse her to the face the first time I dismount.....

    This genuinely made me 'lol'.

Used my Lidl toolkit for the first time to take apart the cassette along with the jockey wheels (shamefully I didn't realise they were that easy to remove) for a deep clean.

Also managed to fit new bar tape, Fi'zik Microtech (white of oourse), after someone had nicked a hole in the last lot in the works bike rack. Not the best of jobs, but certainly not as bad as I had feared...I'm sure as and when I do it again I'll be better at it!

Must remember to get a new set of Keo cleats today or tomorrow...
