Normally I wipe my chain down with a paper towel, last evening I used an old oil soaked rag and by 'eck it came up shiny! It's daft little moments when you try something new and it works so much better.Chunky Cyclists need your love too! :-)

Discovered my left crank arm was totally loose last night about a mile into my commute. A reminder that if you didn't fettle it yourself, check all the bolts!0

We had freezing rain this morning. Not hail, a proper ice shower  Weather report on the radio was for cold and dry... :roll:Chunky Cyclists need your love too! :-)

Do some bearing types settle in more than others or is it poor fitting on initial installation? The Kinesis bearings don't need a press, they fall in and sit on a taper in the head tube. Would poor machining mean the bearings move a bit at first?0 -
Fitted new brake blocks to the Galaxy. Previous ones had half a mm to go to the metal. Cutting it a bit fine!
I've previously used Lifeline ones from Wiggle which I've been very happy with, and I'm sure I'll get some more when I get a chance, but in the meantime, I've put some cheapy cheapy cheap ones on there from Wilko's, made by Alhonga, as they're all I had in the spares box. They seem to do the job well enough though.
Fitted new chain to my Dawes 'Easy Street' Hybrid, as the previous one was looking, and feeling a little worse for wear following the winter. I'm not sure it's ever been replaced since I bought the bike back in 1993. The stretch on the chain was comical, and along with a few seized links from leaving it caked in snow, the shifting was dire.
Sadly, unsurprisingly the new chain skipped on the freewheel. I've salvaged another 6 speed freewheel from a spare wheel I've got however, and it's all working again. Total spent on the bike in the last 20 years - under £20.....1938 Hobbs Tandem

Added 4.7 inches ....
to my Charge Plug. Now rolling with 42x15 (73.9"). Next stop, 77.4" if I can find a suitably bling'd 44T. Also fitted new tyres (cheap Vittoria Rubinos 25mm), replacing the ponderous OEM Charge Coaster 32s. And also fitted some full size SKS mudguards. Useful in the wet I suppose, but the Plug now looks decidedly less gangster. :?0 -
Replaced the outer chainring on the Equilibrium with a lovely Stronglight Zicral one. The original Tiagra 4500 one must have done the best part of 22,000 miles and had worn to the point where it had just razor-sharp nobbles rather than teeth. The teeth were so worn that I had to re-adjust the height of the front mech by about 4mm to stop it fouling the new teeth.
Makes the chainset look much better as well.
Strangely the little ring is still brand-new looking.0 -
erm it definitely worth checking your brake blocks every once in a while, my rears are down to the metal :shock:Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

The kaff is up on the workstand.
New chain, new cassette, new 105 deraileur, good wheels back on, Discs trued, bent hanger straightened (hence new deraileur), new cables, Front guard off and new pads. Just need to re-index and it will be ready for Commuting duties again.
The Boardman, needs preping for Sale and the Alur needs re-indexing ready for the summer."If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got."

Cleaned chain and cassette on Ridley. Removed bar tape on all 3 bikes. Re-cased-and-cabled the brakes on the Ridley to re-site the in-line tension-adjusters to the rear. Swapped bars between Storck and Ridley. New cassette, chain, gear cables and casings for the Dolan. Re-taped all 3 sets of bars.
And OMG the change in the rear shifting on the Dolan with new casings, after 3 years and 20,000+ miles! Like a dream now.Dolan Titanium ADX 2016

I've stripped the carradice bagman and mudguards from my CX, new wheels and randonneur pro 2s at 35mm, TRP spyre on the front.
Yes we're in for some bad weather.0 -
Yep, took the guards off mine at the weekend. Still not well enough to ride it so the weather might hold a while longer.0

Oh my what a difference the bike makes, 1/3 rd in I was 2 mph avg faster even with a slight headwind, so much so I took a new twisting longer route, get in!!!Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

The shifting on my trek equipped with 105/ultegra mix is so smooth I kept looking down to check it had shifted, the only difference in that setup to my others are the sealed cables.

 Erm, how *did* you dismount?
Rebuilding the caadx post-RVV tonight. Observations: 105 (5800) is the business, but I need new brakes; the cheap Avid cantis that came stock with the bike are now the clear weakest link (not counting the engine ).0 -
UE, you do realise you have another foot that can be put down in case of emergencies don't you? More impressed that you thought to take a picture before stopping.0

Too good a photo opportunity to miss! I did think about using my other foot eventually, I always unclip with the left so I don't fall into traffic. After years of muscle memory, it's quite difficult to unclip and stop on the wrong side - let alone getting off the bike with a crank arm dangling from your shoe.
I wish I'd seen someone else doing it, must have been hilarious.0 -

Had a cable strip itself inside the housing last week, time to re-do the whole lot. Looking forward to smooth shifting again!
Winter riding can be a real b***h on components.0
