A few bits and pieces to ye 'ole R8 this weekend.
EA70 flat bars have now (at long last) been replaced with shiny new EC90 ones. Also fitted Ritchey foam grips as the ESI were worn out.
Replaced the SLX front gear lever with an XT gear one.
This allowed me to move the gear and brake levers further inwards so I can now have proper two finger braking! Wuhoo!0 -
Cycled to work in the morning, locked up the bike, went in to waste some time, went out to roll down to Asda for milkshake and realized that I had a puncture.
No biggie, wheel off, looking at the thread which doesn't exist anymore (ooo!!!ooo) and scratching my head.
Tire (Hutch) sits very firmly on rim as previously failed attempts to use it with sealant made it stick (also true to the innertube inside). I just need to get to the station somehow tonight but as I'm missing about 20% of the thread it will be a little bit like playing russian roulette.
Ranty fettling over until 5pm...0 -
Went back to MTB shifter. No trim function... and no chain rub.
It works. This months-long-fettling might be over...

Gives a gear range of 20-125 gear inches. 8)
Its useful knowing which ones are redundant gears - the biggest 3 sprockets on the outer and smallest 4 sprockets on the granny. That is, all those gears are already available on the middle ring.0 -
Chain slipped off the lowest cassette sprocket twice yesterday so some limit screw adjustment neededRule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Swapped the chain on the fixie after seeing I'd stretched the last one, gave the rest of the bike a bit of a tidy.
Must have a seized link as the chain now rattles noisily as I pedal.
Oh, and the front disc has started rubbing and whistles.
Fettling fail, will have to repeat this evening.0 -

I have a choice take the SS home, strip clean and rebuild in one go or over a week of lunch breaks without the right tools in a dark office basement.

Oh I dunno, based on some recent examples, I'd say that was one of your better ones. :twisted:Open One+ BMC TE29 Seven 622SL On One Scandal Cervelo RS0 -
tarting up the CR1 in anticipation of better weather to come.
New bearings / grease in the hubs, fine tuned to eliminate play, lubricated freehub and fitted new Pro 4 SC tyres.
New cassette, chain and one chainring. Both mechs off for a deep clean. Think the rear may need replacing (jockey wheels knackered, can't get them out because the bolts are rounded, and it's 8 years old and owes me nothing).
Knackered LH shifter replaced by a functioning Ebay bargain. Cables all lubed and recycled; fitted some inline adjusters since the downtube stops won't take them.
BB and headset bearings buttery smooth so left as is.
Just the bars to retape and the rear mech to sort.0 -
Swapped bottom bracket on the Crosslight build I did late last year, turns out I had used the wrong screw to mount the gear cable guide under the BB and it was fouling the plastic inner shell of the bottom bracket (too long!) - made it a bit of a bugger to get the old one out until I clocked what was going on. This would be the issue with installing the chainset before running the wires.
Still, I suppose now that it's sorted (and I'm running a 105 instead of Tiagra BB) I ought absolutely fly.... we shall see.0 -

Had it a while now with a front suspension fork, but took that off to be rebuilt, and fitted a rigid carbon fork instead to make this...
Under 9 kg, so should be a nice bike for just about anything.

Back in February, dhope wrote:Bobbygloss wrote:Update: I think I've killed my bike.
The caliper mounting tab on the frame has snapped off...
Trek judging by the decal - lifetime frame warranty for original owners I think?
Trek, via Spinn bike shop, have indeed honoured the warranty, and I have a fine new upgraded frame. Thanks dhope for the pointer. Fettling fun has been cleaning all the old parts and transferring them across.
Only downsides are that the new frame seems a bit smaller (I had to cut the steerer a bit, and the old gear cables were too long), it takes a BB91 bottom bracket instead of threaded, and it has no mountings for full mudguards.0 -

Never know, they might provide you with a new BB if you ask nicely0 -
The shop is providing the BB91 for free, though they are having to order it. They were also going to do the transfer of parts, but I fancied doing it myself and giving everything a good clean in the process.0

New Shimano BR685 road disc hydraulics, shifters and calipers, for the CX commuter, awesome!0

Fitted an ultegra bb I had from the groupset I bought(not needed for the pf helium) to the icarus as the creaking was getting worse esp when out of the saddle, cleaned the chainset but can't decide if I'm going to change the rings as they look a bit worn;might keep them on and see how they are in a while.
Also had to re-fit the front mech on the cross bike and adjust the rear mech too,all ok but some new cables will be required I think.

This, on BL-R780 brake levers - widely purported to be the best flat bar brake lever available.
You can't get Dura Ace flat bar brake levers, that would be blasphemy. If they existed though I have a feeling they would be all metal.0 -

Changed the Equilibrium from Tiagra to Centaur/Veloce. First time with Campagnolo, will be interesting to see how it goes. Still have the Tiagra brakes and chainset.
Next up will be the CR1, which seems to have suffered a lot of indignity over the winter. It must have been a slightly damp ride the last time I used it as the mechs and cables seem rusted to chuff. I'm so embarrassed.0 -
Bonded a penny washer into the left rear dropout of my PX carbon frame after a seized wheel bearing caused the locknut to scoop a big chunk of the material out. Looks OK actually, fingers crossed the dropout is still strong enough!- - - - - - - - - -

A productive garage session this afternoon.
Removed wheel from Tri-cross turbo bike - removed cassette and soaked it in degreaser.
Retrieved old spare Bontrager wheel from my gf's Trek 1000 that has been sat in the garage roof doing nothing since the pair were replaced a couple of years ago.
Removed 9 spd cassette from an R500 that was knocking about - sank that in degreaser also.
Put the better of the two cassettes on the Bontrager wheel, and put turbo tyre on that - that is now back on the Tri-Cross for turbo duties.
Original Tri cross wheel now re-shod with the Rubino Pro 25mm tyre, and it's original cassette, and ready to go when I want to take the small one out in the trailer for this coming spring/summer.
Got shouted at for using the kitchen scourer to clean my hands (Had thin gloves on but they split) so have just ordered 4l of Swarfega from Amazon!Felt F70 05 (Turbo)
