  • Happy to lead a Surrey Slowcial on the 9th. Leaving RP at 9:30/10 with a pub lunch at the Cricketers.

Do you know what time roughly we would get to a) the cricketers b) to the end point of the ride (wimbledon?). Assuming a 10am depart.

I am supposed to be in Forest Hill at 2pm, I will almost certainly be late but it would be good to know by how much (roughly).

Sorry Lambshoulder - impossible to say. I would normally look to ride a flat route at 20mph plus, but as this is a slowcial we'll be going at the pace of the slowest rider. I'd hope to be at the Cricketers some time between 12 and 1. It's almost bang on 30 miles from RP to the pub, and then 16 or so back to Wimbledon Common or 10 miles back to RP. The route back to Wimble is a little more scenic, the route back to RP just mirrors part of the route out.

Cool makes sense. I will probably stick with the group till lunch and make my own way back from there.

I may turn up for the 9th, depending on if I can be bothered to wake up early enough to make the trip in (it's about 25 miles in, early is proper early for a Saturday), and if I'm not elsewhere riding that weekend :)

Either way, if I'm there, then I'm there. Else I'm not :)

I need to know Shoulder of Lamb's real name - he's a bit suspicious.

The pub stop is "optional"? Are you sure?

It's optional in the sense that I will be stopping for a beer and some lunch!

Others are free to carry on, but they will be bereft of Garmin.

Room for a hybrid(er) on 16th, or would I be too slow/uncomfortable over that distance? :(

Speed isn't an issue Wanda, well, I'll be pedalling my bike at 15 -17mph not sure what that is as an average, slower up hills.

Comfort, well that depends would you feel comfortable around me in my lycra, could you keep your eyes from staring at it..... only you can answer that...

DDD are you actively trying to put people off this ride?

Nice one on the organisation, DDD. See you on the 9th, all being well. I'm looking forward to a pootle!

IP.... did you hear that? A POOTLE.

It's easier said than done though, as I discovered last night... 'we should slow down.'...... 'yes, we're not really pootling'.

CW if you can bear to face the lycra (eww!) you should definitely come along.

ETA: yes speedsters, it's a pootle! I think there are now more fast people than slow on this ride!

I wouldn't worry about slowness, as that's what these rides are all about: pootling along. Comfort is a very personal matter though.

I'm split between bringing the SS and possibly being reduced to walking up the hills, or bringing the hybrid and possibly suffering from seat/bar comfort issues as we get over 10 miles.

The hybrid might be more sensible, to be honest. If I strip off the guards, rack and lock that's ll used for commuting, it might even be slightly less than heavyweight and enable me to do some decent miles. Maybe.
    Bike/Train commuter: Brompton S2L - "Machete"
12mile each way commuter: '11 Boardman CX with guards and rack
For fun: '11 Wilier La Triestina
SS: '07 Kona Smoke with yellow bits

To be fair, I actually find riding more slowly to be less comfortable. I think it's because the power you generate riding faster lifts you off the saddle more so there's less weight pushing down. Plus you're not in the saddle as long before you arrive at your destination :)

But my definition of fast and slow will be very different to another person's (particularly if that other person is Jash) and I'd put myself firmly on the slow side so it sounds like this ride ought to be about right for me.

Yes, well actually I am a vicious serial killer who plans to lure you into quiet country lanes before devouring you all.... So revealing my real name on the internet wouldn't be very clever would it?

Ok, so I'm a complete numpty and forgot that 9th August was actually the date I couldn't do originally but since I've had several days of looking forward to this I'm going to try to re-kerjigger my schedule to allow me to make it but I'll probably still have to bail earlyish (around midday) to make it home in time to meet people.

    Sorry.

Bring the SS, I'll be on the fixie for nearly 100 miles  (35 miles each way just to get to RP, and then however many we manage from RP)

I think this is going to kill me :?

I might be going mountain biking in Wales on the 9th, but if not then I will definately join the run on the 9th from Roehampton Gate.
