Jamey, we're starting a 42-mile ride at 10am which involves stopping at a pub about halfway. I think the only way for you to do it that makes sense is ride with the group to the pub and then don't stop and head home by your preferred route. There is no way on god's green earth that we'll get back to Wimbledon before 2.30 at the earliest.

Not sure, have to ask Principe around what time will we be getting back.

Fear not! I'm steering us as clear of many nasty roads and steep climbs as I can, there's one stretch on a busy dual carriageway but it's over v quickly and my bro managed it the other day and he's only ridden a bike properly 3 times since he was a kid.

Wimble it is then! Somewhat perversely the steepest climb of the day will prob be the run up to Wimbledon common...

Haha - make sure it's one of the roads between Worple Road and the Ridgway  Or if we need it a bit easier, Arterberry Road is like a mini Alpe d'Huez with all its hairpins*

If I can avoid working Sunday and can drag my arse out of bed at such an unholy hour I'm there.

Will put the route in the Garmin in case IP can't handle the (modest) pace and disappears off towards the horizon.

Well it's 32 miles to the pub, perhaps you could stick with us til we get there which should be 12 or so, just in time for an early lunch I hope! Have a play around with BikeHike and you can calc some routes home with mileages etc.

There's no going back, bring your tooth brush and count yourself lucky attica not going or you'd be really lost FOREVER :P

I see you're planning to do the Dulwich Paragon ride on the 16th! Is that the regular Saturday ride? If so you don't need a leader, there's always someone to lead it. If it's a nice day there'll be probably about 70 cyclists. They usually split into 3 groups, fast medium and slow. I know the route like the back of my hand, I'd offer to show you all round but I'm at a wedding that day....

I think we need to lower expectations a little: if this really is a sociable ride where everyone cycles together and no one will be under pressure, then there's no way we'll be at the pub at 12, more like 1.

I'm gonna get so mullered in the pub that I'll have to get a cab home!

Joking aside I would expect the itinerary to look like this:

    Meet: 9:45
    Leave: 10:00
    Arrive @ pub: 12:00
    Leave pub: 13:30
    Arrive Wimbledon: 14:30

    All guesswork this of course!

Fiona's right, Jash. I don't average more than 16mph when I go out for spins with my (same speed as me - "fast" would be an exaggeration) mates. On a slowcial, where we're riding at the pace of the slowest rider (and the slowest rider shouldn't feel any pressure to speed up), 11/12mph is a way more realistic average pace.

Biondino - yeah, that's what I was thinking, will prob have to break off before (or at) lunchtime.

Which is a nuisance as I was one of the people specifically requesting a break as I didn't think I'd make it all the way in one go. Might have to train it home, will see.

Oh, fair enough - I was basing figures on 15mph or so.

How many people will be bringing Garmins? It's be nice if I didn't have to be at the front for the whole ride.

Garmin, check. Only a lowly 305 though so it's a monochrome line with no proper mapping.

Perhaps create a route from the pub to Epsom station on your Garmin then? I used to have the 305 and it's ok for navigation one you're zoomed in close enough.

3 hours for 42 miles, that's not THAT slow. If anyone's a complete newb at that sort of distance they may not manage that sort of average... Especially over the last hour after beer!

Did someone say leave Richmond Park at 10am and get to the pub at 1pm? That's like a day.. what are we doing skateboarding?

Joking aside while I did say 'slow ride' I had intended that it was a longish distance ride for the slower folk to improve fitness and put miles in legs. As oppose to the 'keep up' with the fast seasoned cyclists among us.

The intention was to aim to pedal at around 15mph but slower if needs be and if someone is slower. Despite this we should still aim to actually ride... I mean sure, ride at the pace of the slowest rider, but we should still at least try... 3 hours to do 32miles...

I was rubbish compared to everyone else when I went down to Wiltshire and rode alongside Jash, Attica, ITB, Bassjunkie and Linsen. But I left with a sense of achievement having never ridden in a world without traffic lights before let alone that distance. We should at least see this as a means of fitness improvement riding alongside others around the same ability or mindset on speed.

    The OP:
I want to go on some longer weekend rides.

I know that there is a thread for this but I was hoping to see if some of the slower, unfitter cyclists are interested - obviously we would be riding at more manageable speeds.

You fast savage bods (Greg66, Jon, Bass, Prince, ITB) are always more than wellcome, though my intention is for a ride more suited to 15-17mph as oppose to 20-25mph.

Heavens NO! This ride is designed for us slower folk who lack, simply don't like riding with or are unable to ride with the faster riders here.

I just don't want to loose the fitness or aspirational aspect of the ride with the implication of the word 'slow.'

If you don't come I'll feel really sh*tty and an a*sehole...

Sorry if I've upset you. Please still come. I'll let you try my Kharma if you've got SPDsl...

Ummm.... aren't you lot missing the point in the middle of all this banter?

Start at 10, get to the pub whenever. Eat. Drink. Cycle back.

    It's not complicated you know?

Cycling away from City / Town centers is a completely different experience - just get out there and get some miles under your belt. Enjoy yourself and simply not worry about speed. Think of the distance.

    You're right and yer not.

This ride is 42 miles. Richmond Park is 15 miles from home, Wimbledon a little less, so I am looking at ~70 miles all in. Originally the idea was for a morning ride on Sunday AM. 70 miles is a fairly hefty slog as I am sure you can testify. I am supposed to be somewhere at 2pm on Sunday. Also I cannot give up all of every sunday for this, but I could give up most sunday mornings. I am willing to go with the flow this w/end and see what happens, but cannot do so every or even every other w/end.

There seem to be quite a few differing expectations and desires for Sunday's ride. I feel that mine are probably going to spoil a number of people's, so I'm going to withdraw. I think there's a real danger no one will enjoy the ride otherwise.

Why don't you split the ride and meet at the pub for a chinwag and drinks? There are enough people interested that you can have a fast ride and a more sedate ride. As long as someone with a Garmin or something leads the slower ride or knows where they're going. I don't think you're going to make all the people happy all of the time on this.
