I want to go on some longer weekend rides.
I know that there is a thread for this but I was hoping to see if some of the slower, unfitter cyclists are interested - obviously we would be riding at more manageable speeds.
You fast savage bods (Greg66, Jon, Bass, Prince, ITB) are always more than wellcome, though my intention is for a ride more suited to 15-17mph as oppose to 20-25mph.
See below for details of forthcoming rides
The rides and dates are as follows:
9th August Surrey Route(Including optional pub stop @ the Cricketers) 42 miles, 1497 feet
Meeting point: Coffee shop near the Roehampton Gate Entrance
Meeting time: 9.45am
Ride leader: Il Principe
(TBC) 16 August Dulwich Paragon, 32 miles, 2020 feet climb
Meeting Point: Dulwich Park entrance, across the road from the picture gallery
Meeting Time: TBC
Ride leader: TBA
30th August Roger's Route, 49 miles, 965 feet
Meeting point: TBC
Meeting time: TBC
Ride leader: TBA

Now you're talkin' my language... Throw in a nap somewhere near the midpoint and I'm in0

<sigh> if only.... my commute speed is basically 16-18mph so that would be ideal for me.Chunky Cyclists need your love too! :-)

Once again, damn you all for being at the other end of the UK!
I'd love to do that. It's one of the main reasons my weekend rides are on my lonesome, because I can plod along at 15mph and enjoy it, as opposed to pushing myself to doing 22mph throughout and end up doing 5mph on every hill because I'm knackered.
Oh well.
Thankfully I've found a forum thing in aberdeen where they have 20-30 milers for pootlers, so I'll probably latch onto them at some point, then work my way up the size and speeds as I see fit. (they go up to 100+ rides for those that go at lightspeed apparently...)
Have a look about, there may be a too-unfit-to-push-it club down there0 -
Wait... Is that 15-17mph figure a rolling average, true average or a typical cruising speed? If it's a true average then it may still be too fast for me.0

Huh? Argh!!! Maths!!!!
I pedal my bike and generally pedal at a speed between 15-17mph, unless uphill, where I could slow too the point of going backwards....
I'm not sure what my average would be. Presumably if we slow pokes ride together, then eventually we will improve and become faster...
Just looking for people around my ability, which is fast for a commuter, slow as a weekend/long distance rider.Food Chain number = 4

Ok, phew... That sounds similar to me then... Count me back in again.0

And just to clear things up:
True average = the clock begins ticking when you set off and doesn't stop until you reach the destination.
Rolling average = as above, but the clock stops when you're stationary (or below a certain speed, say 1-2mph).
Typical cruising speed = the speed you most often see when you look down at your computer halfway down a long, straight piece of road with no interruptions on a reasonably still day when you're not racing (ie putting in your normal effort).0 -
I could be in as I have been meaning to get out on the bike at the weekend for ages. I am thinking Sunday mornings would work best for me. My commuting averages are in the 15-17mph range, but I thought that was fast?0

Fixed your post to fit my thoughts0 -

This would be my prefered means of measurement.
Over longer distances I'm slower, A LOT SLOWER, especially where hills are involved! 16st ain't easy to climb with.
So if we did a long distance weekend ride (where there are no traffic lights) I think I would feel more comfortable pedalling around the 15mph - 17mph department - with the view of going as fast as the slowest person (not leaving a man behind) as oppose to the view of keeping up with the fastest.
Sounds like you're on board Jamie, are you going to Richmond Park this Saturday?
Any other takers, Sewinman, Shoulder of Orion?Food Chain number = 4

sure sounds fun, while i do go on the odd club run etc i'm fairly slow though at least in SE england i'm fairly unstopable ie i'm not that stressed going up winterfold/whitedown. though rather slow up them.
edit i also know the lanes around the north downs quite well, and pub/cafes0 -
OK lets make a list of those interested and then possibly throw in some dates, times, where to meet and a route.DonDaddyD - Laurence

My thoughts are Sunday, I can do any Sunday from the 26 July am happy to meet up anywhere in South London, though outside DeVer in Norbury or somewhere in Wimbldon are my obvious choices.
Not sure about routes - am open to suggestions (I've never down more than 40 miles or so in one sitting).Food Chain number = 4

On the rare chace I'm free and your riding near me, I wouldn't mind coming along.0

South London is good but Wimbledon is not ideal... but as it was your idea why not meet up in your neck of the woods for the first run out and if and when we go again then we meet nearer someone else's place?
Wimbledon is about 12miles from me, so I wouldn't want the actual ride to be more than about 40 miles as I will need to get there and back = about 64 miles or roughly 4 hours using your 16mph average. That would certainly do it for me (at least to start with).
Last Sunday in July or first Sunday in August work for me.0 -

Tsk tsk! but yes there's clearly not enough cycling social going on ATM, i'm out of the game for a couple of days I seem to have picked up an injury either on the plane or whilst nailing the most miles in one single week, last week.
Just updated the stats to include the last couple of weeks, taking it easy for a few days nowRule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

I'm in Croydon and happy to meet up outside De Ver or in Wombledon.
My longest ever ride is also in the 40s (45 I think, but it was back before I broke my elbows so seems like a world away) hence my requesting some kind of midpoint stop-off for a bit of rest.
I could do this weekend. Sun 26th is probably not possible for me and neither is 9th August but others should be ok.0 -
I'm interested.

be sure to post details of the proposed route well in advance now, we would want to accidentally bump into you all and say bag half the SCR scalps in one go now would we....?

Meeting at a central station, getting a train out to Kent/Sussex/Hampshire and then doing a traffic free ride is fun. But it does take more than a morning.0 -

You planning on growing a beard and turning up on a folder with a couple of panniers full of breeze blocks just for the points? :twisted:0 -

I had thought of something like that but see above.
I would be up for 4-5 hours on a Sunday morning for now. I can make it last week of July or first week of August or maybe both but not this w/end.0 -

Thats pretty interesting, I've just moved to Aberdeen and was a bit daunted by some of the clubs up here that seem to be run almost like military operations (I am sure they are fine but the websites look very competitive).
20-30 miles just dawdling once a week or so sounds ideal.0 -
If I turn up, you lot are screwed RE points (they both fold). Anywhere within reasonable journey distance of me, I'd at least be interested.Dahon Speed Pro TT; Trek Portland
