I'd say around half an hour ish, you wouldn't hold me up m8 my mrs's last time was 40 minutes and she's getting faster so I have to demolish that time or face a lifetime of abuse, my aim? to do it without sweating RAWR!!!!

Half an hour? That's going some. My problem is that as soon as there is the slightest hint of an uphill gradient, my speed drops off hugely. I can't push too hard because I had knee surgery last year and if I try to force the speed I start to get pain again. I'm hoping that as my legs become stronger, this will become less of an issue and I can see the benefits of having someone to push you to ride faster.

I have a few things I need to do tomorrow, but what time were you thinking of getting out?

Sorry mate, tomorrow morning is a non starter for me, moving a bit of furniture from the Parent's back to ours for the nursery. 6pm would be better or pick pretty much any other day.... :)

I'm being monitored by the hospital dietitian every couple of months and weighed by the practice nurse every four weeks. After the advice given by the dietitian I've completely switched my diet around and, believe it or not, have increased the amount I eat everyday and managed to lose 10.5 pounds in the first three weeks.

I've not ridden properly for about ten years now and am seriously overweight at the moment. I can't tell you my exact weight in stones and pounds but in firkins it's two firkin much! In seriousness I didn't ask what my current weight was as I'm more interested in how much is coming off.

The main goal is to lose enough weight to actually get out on the bike again without fear of destroying the wheels! It's hard to believe now that I completed the coast-to-coast solo when I was in my early 20s.

Eating too little is a common trap to fall into. If you eat below your BMR, your body will stop some less crucial functions, like hair and skin renewal, and will burn muscle (if you're not using it) in favour of hanging on to fat which is metabolically less active (takes fewer calories to keep).

It's why I always advocate keeping a food diary for people trying to lose weight. It can show you if you're eating too little as well as too much.

Sounds like you're on your way!

Try and get in some exercise, though, even if it's just walking for 30 minutes a day. People underestimate how good it is for you, and if you are carrying a lot of extra weight, it's an even better workout!

Here here totally agree with that, I put most of my weight gain on a bad diet, eating 1 main meal a day and snacking the rest or binging out when I was hungry, not a good idea to be honest

Just been out and purchased some new scales!
I got a set that work out BMI as well as body fat % and water so hopefully will be able to measure myself regularly, I already feel some difference in my clothing after less than a week so I'm happy :)

That depends entirely on what you're snacking on. There's an argument to say that grazing is a healthier way to eat because it helps avoid blood sugar spikes.

Trick is to eat LITTLE and often and to eat healthy food, not junk.

I like to refer to snacking as eating junk and grazing eating small amounts of healthy food often.

I'm currently walking about 10 to 15 hours a week at the moment. I used to be a WHI walk leader a couple of years ago. Just goes to show how quickly even walking fitness goes. Just finished an eight mile walk this morning and still feel fairly tired after it. This is fourth time I've done the walk in the past few weeks so am hoping to see an improved time at some point.

thought I may as well join the big boned club

Im Ben from near manchester and I'm currently weighing in at 17st 5, was 18st 1 6 weeks ago..

I ride an on one 456 (freshly built up) so will be trying to get out as much as possible...

I will be aiming to do 2-3 am rides (about 10 miles) before I go to work and 2 - 3 evening rides (15 miles) both will be a mix of some road riding and some singletrack/offroad woodland stuff etc. and will hopefully get out once over the weekend for some proper off road fun.

To be honest Ive not really set a goal weight but will let you know when I get there LOL

  • Back from my weekend in Scotland and it would seem that this thread has really taken off :D
It was very difficult to go throughout the weekend without overdoing it on the food and drink. I went up the park with the little 'uns only to find when we came back that the women had been to the chippie for our supper. After weeks of decent, healthy food the fat intake was too much for me.....I couldn't finish my meal and it laid on my stomach throughout the night. Boy did I suffer. It just goes to show what my diet was like before. I would have relished eating this sort of stuff. The rest of the weekend, including the party, was much better. I largely stuck to wine instead of beer and was therefore much less bloated.
(Sorry if this is too much info)
Back to the gym today for an update on my workout and to see if I'd put on any weight. Thankfully I am at the same weight as before I left and can now push on towards my loose-ish target of another 10 kilos lost by late September.
    Start Weight: 128 kilos (20.2 st) (April 17th 2009)
    Current Weight:119 kilos (18.7 st) (June 18th 2009)
Target Weight: 92 kilos (14.5 st) (sometime mid-2010, hopefully sooner)

    Hi everyone,

    Room for a new member?

Used to be an avid cyclist on a road bike but haven't ridden in years and after lots of donut and pastry abuse I've got up to 17 stone. with blood pressure problems and health issues i'm getting back on the bike.

I've not got a road bike any more but have a mountain bike. I've dusted i off, given it a service and got out on it few times in the past couple of weeks and i've lost a few pounds already. I'd like to start doing some of the mad mountain bike trails but my fitness and so forth woulddn't permit at the mo.

I may need to think about swapping the tyres as the nobbly ones aren't too comfy when on the road and there isn't many forests etc near me (Clacton on Sea). Perhaps I'll be able to find some that give me the best of both worlds.

Looking to get down to 14 stone at least.

DW - try some bodyweight exercises. Press ups (3 sets of 10) squats (3 sets of 20) for example. This will give you a different kind of workout and can be done in 10mins in your hotel room...

Funny you should mention it, that's what I've been doing.

I brought a couple "10 minute solution" dvds (amazon do loads) but they won't play on my work laptop

So, I did lunges, pushups, tricep dips and the plank this morning. I need weights for squats as my thighs are too strong for unweighted squats.

  • I am off work for two weeks but have just downloaded an iPod resistance band workout for when I go back to work....all told it should only take about 10-20 minutes to do and I have a cheap set of Everlast bands bought from eBay to stuff into my rucksack. Every little helps.
