    Hi,
I am finding that most of my riding other than my speed circuit is flat. I am considering driving out to other ride areas to find hills to get the necessary burn.

However, I got a little lost on a ride th other night and don't want to repeat it in an area I don't know.

I feel a Garmin coming on.

Are we talking Road or MTB riding mate? I'm also looking for somewhere new to ride and I need to get better at riding uphill :o)

    Hi,
we are talking riding a hybrid on the road. I am thinking of chucking the bike in the back of the van and riding the backroads of the A64 Scarborough road just outside of York. Should give me a bit of a thigh burning sensation.

    Ian
  • If you want a thigh burning sensation you could try 2 things that I've just fixed
1 - lower the seat by 2-3 inches
2 - dont clean your brakes and let them clog up with mud so that they are always on and never spring back open.

I only fixed 1 a couple of weeks ago and 2 tonight! Ooops!

Or alternatively start adding in 1 minute max effort intervals

    Thanks for the welcome :D
TLT. I have done some weights recently and it's not too bad as long as I don't push the deadlifts too much. I do have a bad habit though of not doing my pilates for my back when it feels good (cos it's ok, so I don't need them) and then suffering later for not doing them  Must work on that. I just hope the miles do come fairly easily.

Glynn. As far as I understand physiology, the 10 miles steady will be better for burning fat and the 5 miles hard will be better at building strength and speed. But of course, the more muscle you have the more fat you will burn even at rest, and you will build more muscle with the 5 mile hard ride. The flip side is you will likely need more recovery after the hard ride, so can do less rides in a week! So maybe do one hard ride a week, and as many steady as you can manage without burning yourself out.

And finally, well done to TLT and DW. Hope to join you in the losers circle soon

While slow and steady is better at burning fat during exercise, intense is better at burning fat after exercise, but is harder to maintain for long enough if you're unfit.

The best thing is to build up your base fitness at a slow steady pace to build endurance. This also teaches your body to use more fat as fuel. Once you can cycle for over an hour, then start to introduce intervals which will give you the benefit of intense exercise while allowing you to recover in between.

Google "base training" for more info :)

Ouch. I have friends who live out that way, near Pickering, and that's definately the way to feel the burn!!!! My problem with hills is that I have dodgy knees so I can't put a lot of pressure through the pedals. I end up dropping the gears right down and spinning as much as I can get away with instead of really pushing through. I have planned a route from here up to their house that I intent to try at some point in the summer, it's about 58 miles one-way

    Hi,
sound like a good ride. My knees are not too bad, I do like to push up the hills but there are not many around me so the ones I have got I work hard on.

From what I can work out from the mountain biking forums is that MTB ing is about twice as hard on rough terrain as road cycling. The average MTB ride is 10miles or so. So what I do is 25mile road rides pushing as hard as I can.

Hopefully when I do get a MTB i will be able to make it around Dalby Forrest.

Whats this road bike milarkey ? lol

seriously though if you want to get in to mtb then the best bet is to go for a 2nd hand frame and build up - i got my first bike 2nd hand and i built it up myself (with bro's help) but cost roughly £150

    not bad really

road cycling is better for fitness but mtb is a lot harder - if i were you id try to do 50miles on road to get mad fit for mtb ! just my opinion

Managed to get out on the bike for the first time in a couple of weeks last night. I've got a small tear in my achilles so was a little apprehensive and decided on what is a decent if short (7 miles) route close to home.
Starts of with a good thigh bursting climb just short of 2 miles and I managed to do the whole ride just 10 minutes longer than my fastest time so was very happy to be able to manage it.
My achilles is bloody sore today though, but I start physio this week so hopefully it'll heal a little quicker.

After getting my new scales last week I've not weighed myself since then so can't comment on any weight loss but I'm optimistic for loss.

I am in a simllar boat. When i started dieting I was tipping the scales at 25 st 9lbs. i was natuarlly "papping it" at that revelation.

about 6 months later i am down to 22 st 4lbs. I am pretty proud of my achievement. eating has been key. Not eating crap and eating at right times is a must. cut out chocolate, cheese and bread. Still have the odd sandwich but totally cut back.

I have been using the Wii fit and recently took ownership of Wii active (which despite being gimmicky) works!

Got the trek about 3 weeks ago for my birthday and i've seen a difference already. I am doing all this to be a healthier person + I am getting married in August and want to look better for it and to feel better about myself.

Biking is the way forward and in my youth i enjoyed nothing more than going for a cycle.

Wow this feels like a confessional lol.

All the best to my fellow dieters and keep up the good work!
  • Its not a diet - its just healthy eating and ditching the crap! :D
But seriously - welcome to the club! :D
Grats on the good start and on the upcoming wedding.

    Hi,
I am up for a ride out anytime Cheshley.

The Kielder thing looks a bit painful.

I will have to let you know about that one when I get my MTB and do the hard run at Dalby for the first time.

    Wow that looks awesome.
Can it be done in just 1 year?
A year is a long time to gain the skills... lose the weight and buy a bike that is capable of anything more than old train lines....
Think those 60 mile rides that are mentioned would be the first real test

Now (respectfully) I know that I may not be the most unfit person here but picture the scene..... 2 years ago I decided that I needed to do something about my weight and fitness when I took the stairs to a meeting on the 4th floor at work and couldn't speak when I got there. 7 weeks later I completed a 36 mile sponsored off-road event run by the British Heart Foundation. (I would post the link but their website appears to be down :( )

I will be entering the same event again this year, it is on 1st November and starts at Sherwood Pines in North Nottinghamshire. If anyone wishes to use this event as a goal for this year, feel free to enter and join me. Please bear in mind that November may not be the best time of year to be out on a bike so you need to consider not just if you feel you'll be able to get up on 1st November and ride 36 miles, but if you can do it in (potentially) bad weather. Last time I did it, the weather was kind, not particularly warm but a bright and sunny day. I don't expect to be so lucky a second time.

Give it some thought. If you can't get to Sherwood Pines for this event, the BHF have lots of events through the year all over the country. I'm hoping to coincide a holiday next year with the 70 mile 'around the island' event on the Isle of Wight. There's nothing like knowing you have to get up on a certain date and ride, to get you out on those days when you don't really feel like it...

There's a forum thread on here started yesterday I think which says how bad the red route at Dalby has become. This matches the thought of my mate who lives close to Dalby and says that some parts of it are pretty much unrideable. I'm hoping to get up to Glentress at some point, friends who have been say it's great for riders of ALL abilities, but with Google saying that it's at least a 4 hour drive and our first baby due in 7 weeks, I don't think I'm going to get there any time soon :(

  • Oh you've gone and done it now Cheshley  I've just had a look at the BHF website and there's loads of interesting rides there. I particularly like the look of the London 2 Paris folding bike challenge. Probably not fit enough just yet, but I have the right bike, gear and clothing already, and definately one to look at for 2010. Thanks for the heads-up matey.

    Challenge accepted!!!!

It's a coincidence because on the 5th of Sept' this year I'm doing a Doncaster to Nottingham cycle ride for charity, it's about 54 miles from my house to Chilwell in Nottingham and there are loads of reasons why I'm doing it, some personal, but it's nothing major and I'm just doing my tiny bit before I venture on and do some bigger stuff. So I am definately up for doing this, without a doubt RAWR!!!!
