  • Yeah - smoothies make it a lot easier to get in the fruit and veg. I wonder if a frozen strawberry margarita counts as a portion? ;)
    Do veg soups count?

@bfg - Sound like you're ready mate. Good luck!

    Don't confuse smoothies with juice.

A smoothie should include all of the flesh of the fruit, so includes the fibre as well. This will make it lower GL.

Juice, however, doesn't have the fibre so, technically, are not as good for you.

    Hello permission to come aboard

Hi my name is Glynn and i have just come across this forum after looking for weight limits on bikes :? so im a little on the heavy side well maybe little is the wrong word.

Im 28 and 23 stone give or take and 6ft 3 witch untill now i thought was a bit much to be starting to ride again.

But after reading some of your guys posts well all 14 pages of them i feel at ease now.

I used to be a postman when i was younger well when i was 18 so i was covering alot of miles a day on my post bike witch i can tell you is a beast and not for the feignt hearted with its drum brakes.
After a few years of getting bored of the winter weather i changed jobs and lifestyle ie sitting on my ass all day and after a few years of that ive ballooned to my current size i was 15 stone.

I thought enough is enough and ive gotta get back on my bike again.

So here i am looking towards that 15 stone target i havent set myself a time limit just gonna try and enjoy it or should i set myself a time limit ?

Ok last thing because this is a lot of text sorry

I need a good pair of shorts and a top to go riding in does anyone have any suggestions im a 48 waist and 50 something chest ive never measured but i think its about that.

    Thanks

    Glynn

    Hi,
Welcome to the club. I have a 48 inch waist, I can usually hoist myself into most xxxl lycra types and put other shorts on the top.

I got these ones from wiggle.co.uk the other day, they are a little tight on the thighs but otherwise very comfy padding

  • Welcome to the club glynn.

The breaking weight was my first concern as well. I've read how some bikes like the kona hoss are built for larger guys but if you dont have such a bike then you'll probably find - as I do on my heap of junk - that you need a bit more air in your tyres and your front suss is pretty useless. But it does the job well enough to get out there and put in the miles on the cycle tracks and get the weight falling off me which is really what counts.

As for clothes.. personally I've been tryng to avoid buying anything. I've got a pile of decent fast drying gym clothes from my pre-illness days thats my first goal - so only another 2-3 stone to lose until I can get into them. Having said that the arse pain is seriously making me think about some of these shorts over some fast drying regular Nike shorts that I have currently. So I'd probably suggest just buying what you think you need as you are going along.

As for how much and how fast to lose....
Everyones different mate. The healthy advice is to lose 2lb a week. But some weeks you'll lose more and some weeks less. Some people also need to focus on targets and some people get too stressed by them. So just do what works best for you. But just pay attention to your food with a food, exercise and weight log so you can see what works and what doesnt for you. And so you can learn how a packet of salty crisps can make you put on a few lb of water over a few days and make you think you've really messed up somewhere when you havent. Or on the other hand so you dont lie to yourself about how many take aways you've had over the last week!

Just get on your bike, put in the miles, enjoy yourself and watch the weight fall off.

  • I agree with TimesLikethese in that it may be too early to go out and buy expensive cycling gear that will be too big in a few months when it'll be winter anyway. better to get the largest padded underwear you can buy and then cheapo shorts for the summer. I am a 42"-44" waist at the moment and can heartily recommend Altura Winter Cruisers (they also come in Summer flavour without the fleece backing) I don't think they'll fit a 48" waist though. I also use RonHill running tights (they're not actually that tight on the lower leg) for riding and the gym - I think I paid something like £15 for them.

Hi guys thanks for all the advice :D

After a lot of looking around and reading forums and such i found these.

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=9364

Apparantly a xxl is ok for a 48-50 waist even though it says 42-44 i think becuase there elasticated.

But if they dont fit paying £40 for a pair of shorts is a little more motivation to get down to a 42-44 to get into them.

I have another question if thats ok how much water should i be drinking while im out for a ride and whats the best way to carry that, a water bottle (maybe 2) or one of the rucksack hydration things.

    Thanks

if you have a decathlon near you they have cheap lycra shorts, just wear these under a regular pair of shorts..http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/performen-3899272/

  • hydration is different for everyone and dependant on your level of fitness and the weather. Better to have too much with you than too little.

4 weeks ago I was drinking > 1litre water per hour, now I'm drinking half that.
And because of the quantity I was just filling up a couple of 2l bottles of juice up with water, though a water bottle for the bike is preferable so you can just keep on cycling and sip regularly.

You may get find yourself a regular run to do or ride to work. So once you've figured out how much you drink over your regular distance then you can decide which size of camel is best for you. then theres all the gear you may wish to carry - like waterproofs, a days food, bike repair kits and tools, first aid kit, etc. That lot may require you to get the larger size of combined rucksack and drinks container - or just stick to a regular rucksack with a couple of bottles of water in it.

Isotonic drinks - see the drinks sticky for recipes - will get to your thirst faster, give you energy, and replace your bodies lost salts so you dont kill yourself by flushing your salts out with too much water, or wake up the next morning with cramps.

But the key is basically to just get out there and see how much your body needs and how it responds to your increasing fitness levels and changes in the weather. And as I said - better to have too much and not use it all than too little and seriously dehydrate yourself.

  • Another one to join the club.

I am 35, 6ft tall and 17st with 25.3% bodyfat, and feeling seriously unfit. I have always been a larger chap but used to do a lot of mtb'ing, played rugby and had a reasonable level of fitness. I quit playing rugby 5 years ago, and at the same time dropped off the cycling frequency. I have a fairly active job and still did some training (mostly weights) but hurt my back in a fall 2 years ago and that was the perfect excuse to become very sedentary!!

I now feel I HAVE to do something to get fitter again. I am moving house next week and will be 10 miles from work so thought that might be a reasonable cycle commute. I only came onto this forum to find some advice on a fast road bike for the commute, but found this thread, and am finding it quite inspiring. I'm impressed with you guys and girls and your effort (some of you seem to be doing distances that scare me! ) and some of you are/have started from a worse situation than me which is perfect for helping me kick excuses into touch. So thanks :D

My target is probably about 13st, though I am not so bothered about weight, but would like to be at 10-15% bodyfat and fitter.

    Cheers.

    Welcome

U said that you moved so work is now 10 miles away is that just one way or there and back because 20 mile a day would be an impressive commute well for me anyway

    :D
  • Cheers,
10 miles each way, but fortunately mostly flat :D
After a first spin of the pedals for some time yesterday, I think I will need to work up to it

    Hi,
I am finding that most of my riding other than my speed circuit is flat. I am considering driving out to other ride areas to find hills to get the necessary burn.

However, I got a little lost on a ride th other night and don't want to repeat it in an area I don't know.

I feel a Garmin coming on.

  • Welcome vintage stumpy!
You've definitely hit the nail on the head about reading through this fat club thread in that its..."perfect for helping me kick excuses into touch"

Unfortunately I know what back pain is like and I really need to get back into doing my physio exercises for it. The only advice I can give is to be careful if you go back into doing weights - every time I've tried I expect to be able to do so much more and knock myself back a month with injuries. So I think the best way is cycling to remove the weight and physio exercises to gently strengthen and flex the muscles - at least until theres a lot less stress on the back.

As for the miles - they come quickly. If you've read my earlier posts you'll note that I couldnt even walk for 5 minutes before having to rest soaked in sweat and gasping for breath. 4 weeks later I'm cycling 36 hilly miles on the hottest day of the year around a beautiful loch. So its surprisingly doable! Just stick with it and gradually build yourself up a little every day.

    Good luck.

    Ok quick speedy question

10+ miles steady riding or 5+ miles hard riding hills and such or maybe switch it up a bit maybe do 10 mile one night do 5 hard the next.

I only ask becuase im struggling to figure out what i should be doing

    Thanks

    Glynn
  • Thanks for the welcome :D
TLT. I have done some weights recently and it's not too bad as long as I don't push the deadlifts too much. I do have a bad habit though of not doing my pilates for my back when it feels good (cos it's ok, so I don't need them) and then suffering later for not doing them  Must work on that. I just hope the miles do come fairly easily.

Glynn. As far as I understand physiology, the 10 miles steady will be better for burning fat and the 5 miles hard will be better at building strength and speed. But of course, the more muscle you have the more fat you will burn even at rest, and you will build more muscle with the 5 mile hard ride. The flip side is you will likely need more recovery after the hard ride, so can do less rides in a week! So maybe do one hard ride a week, and as many steady as you can manage without burning yourself out.

And finally, well done to TLT and DW. Hope to join you in the losers circle soon

Ok quick update ive just done my daily commute from work dead on 6 miles in 25 mins witch is 5 mins of my prevoius best (thanks new bike :D )

Its a varied ride little up hill lots of straights and some downhill and i do that 5 days a week.

Then becuase the wife wants to lose some weight we go out after tea and ride another 2-3 miles (to the mother inlaws  )

So here the question is that enough to be doing in the week becuase after all that im not feeling all that tired.

I intend on trying to ride to where the wife works on sataday and sunday witch is a 18 mile round trip so that will be 36 miles over the weekend.

    Thanks

    Glynn
  • cheers guys & gal
    and gz DW ;)

    @Glynn - I had the same dilema.
Basically - mix it up so you dont get bored but aim for the miles for the greatest loss. Try to get up to 100-150miles per week.
Thats what I was originally intending anyway - but ended up just going for increasing speed on my 18mile ride. I've taken an hour off my original time so far.

Right well I've had to take the plunge and buy some of these lycra cycling shorts. Numb bits and a red raw arse and thighs are not my idea of fun! Hopefully this will do the trick - else there is those bel air saddles that have been mentioned before.
