Hello
I just weighed myself and I have lost 4lbs this week so am down from 15 stone 4 to 15 stone 0. Well chuffed. Have not managed to get my bike back on the road yet so this is due to a combo of healthy eating (ok except for beef monster munch) and my PS2 dance mat. I have also walked miles this week flyer dropping for my business. I think I must have sweated out 3 of the 4 pounds today hehe.
Hoping to get my bike sorted next weekend as I do prefer outdoorsy exercise.
Very motivated to lose this weight as I have a lovely new man plus what I said before about wanting to be chasing my 3 year old around. Ok I draw the line at dancing/singing round a supermarket like she does.
Starting weight 15 stone 4
week 1 lost 4 lbs so now 15 stone 00 -
Hi,
BFG, keep your chin up. Regulate the food intake. Just rmember, you arent burning as many so you dont need as much.
Backtocycling, Set yourself a goal, that you can anchieve, i.e if I lose 1st will do something I desperately want to do etc. It works.
My goal is that at 23st I can use the weights in the gym. I can't wait until Monday mornings weigh in to see if I can go on the weights.
Then I will have to set myself a 22st goal that I have not thought of yet but it will be something that remains at the front of my mind until I achieve it.
Best of luck.

i refuse to weigh in until friday afternoon, this is because i know that i could easily jump up 1 or 2lbs in one day
i've rode 80miles so far this week, i didnt go out tonight as i was feeling tired from work but i'll get another 25 in tomorrow after work and then i'm off friday so I see a 30miler coming if the weathers alright, then weigh during the afternoon
but well done to the two of you and keep your spirits up BFGCrafted in Italy apparantly0 -

not lost any weight for 3-4 weeks now since not being able to ride with the injury.
Dropped calories without thinking about it down to around 1500 a day.
But still no loss on that.
Feeling pretty down...
so nothing really to report but happy to see you guys keeping it going...0 -
Hi,
sorry to hear things are not so good.
If you have a garage or room to put some weights in, is it possible for you to train under a red light?
I did a few spinning classes last week where you train on a special type of exercise bike that has a weighted wheel that you can take presure on and off. You can buy spinning DVD's where you are led through a virtual ride.
I sweated my wotsits off, far more than any bike ride I have ever done. Worthwhile looking at if you cant get out.
Also, been doing research into fat loss. I am not doing myself any favours by holding off the weights. I set myself the goal of no weights until 23st and will stickj to it but from what I have read. If you do heavy weights followed by 45 mnins cardio 3 times a week and straight cardio twice a week for 1 hour the fat will just drop off.
I am really hoping I am 23st on Monday to hit the weights, I can't wait to try the theory out.

According to my muscle and fitness magazines the best way to achieve weight loss is to combine weights with cardio. The normal way of doing things is as you have stated where the priority is gain in muscle. However, when the priority is fat loss there is meant to be a 3:1 advantage in doing cardio before weights.
As for riding an exercise bike.. you are right mate - I could just jump on the exercise bike I have in my house with the blindfold on. (Oh and I've got 10 year old back injury which prevents me from even doing any pressups or situps - awaiting physio...)
I just thought I was on the mend and then .... having to wear a blinfold the majority of the day really does destroy your life. So I'm just really pi55ed off with life at the moment.0 -
Briarquest: dont go for too heavy weights mate, only what you can lift comfortably, something with enough reps to get your heart rate up without knackering up your arms and legs. Just to kick start the metabolism so that your cardio workout is as worthwhile as possible.
how much weight is comfotable is up to you. when I'm on the weights i only lift about 12kg per dumbell and 20kgs on my cross bar. 10-15 reps, 2-3 sets. but if i'm on the turbo in the garage i also try bashing the crap out of my punch bag as that really gets the heart pumping and the sweat pooringCrafted in Italy apparantly0 -
Hi,
I used to quite seriously bodybuild. Which is part of my problem in that the exercise stopped and the food intake increased
I have always been able to go fairly heavy with my weights. I am envisaging a 1hr weights session along the lines of
Legs, Back, Biceps followed by 45 mins cardio.
Next Day
Chest, shoulders, triceps followed by 45 mins cardio
Can't wait for the 2010 range bikes to come out. I want a big 29er and an unlimited pass for Dalby forrest

well waited till after my ride this afternoon to weigh in, did 30 miles with 2 mates averaging 18.5mph so that was good but i was pretty wobbly at the end. had my tea too and let that go down before the weigh in but eventually i did and i came in at 15st 2lbs which is roughly a loss of 3.5lbs since sunday so I'm quite happy with that, especially since i binged on 2 big bags of onion rings mid week instead of a proper evening meal
I'm aiming for getting under 15st next friday, anything more and as punishment I'll be riding around the block 10 times as I want the next 7 days to be the last time I ever weigh over 15st. if i achieve this then I got 7/8lbs to lose with 6 weeks to goCrafted in Italy apparantly0 -
Hello!
I'm a 38 yr old female weighing in at 70kg. At 5ft 6 thats about a stone and a half heavy for me. I have never been into cycling seriously as it quite literally, was a severe pain in the a**, but after I couldn't climb (rock) anymore due to elbows (tendonitis) in January this year, the weight piled on and two weeks ago I said 'sod it, no more!'. So I have been cycling in and out of work (16.2 miles total) every day. Its taking me about 33 mins which is know is slow  Switched to a food combining diet about 2 months ago too. The diet works but I need to do some research into mixing it with cycling. I don't want to reduce my performance ('performance' is an over exaggeration ) by not eating enough or at the right time etc etc etc. I've lost 3kg (had lost 6kg but put 3kg back on because I went on holiday...)
Anyhoo, here I am. I ride a Specialized MTB with skinnies but am in the process of looking for a road bike as oddly, I am now completely addicted!0 -

Hi and welcome good on you for getting into it but i'm compelled to comment about your pace 8 miles in 33mins is by no means slow, especially for someone just starting out and on an MTB! in a few more weeks you'll have knocked off a few mins and with a road bike you can prob knock off another minute. its very addictive, especially when the weight loss is there, just remember if it ever isn't then use the disappointment as motivation for the following week!Crafted in Italy apparantly0 -
HI and thanks! Nice to 'meet' you.
I thought it was hugely slow?!?! 13 ish mph on a bike is apparently no more exerting than walking according to some of the sites I've seen. :?: (I am not disputing what you say, the other sites might be talking carp for all I know..)Perhaps its me though, maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way. Whatever though, good lord, you've just made my night
Oh I am determined to do this. Haven't felt so positive and happy about something since er..well anyway, and this is with a sore ass and legs like lead weights imagine how I'll be when I'm actually fit0 -
Hi Miss,
welcome. That is good going on a MTB remember you are riding a MTB and not a racer.
Well done.

well if you do just over 16 miles riding with total riding time being 1hr 6mins then your average pace is around 4min 5s per mile and you average speed roughly 15mph not 13 and that on a mtb is alright alone, for someone who has only recently started riding is pretty good. ok you should remember that is 2 intervals. so perhaps on your next day off have a crack at a 10mile ride or even 20 if your up to it and just see how long it takes you at a comfortable easy paceCrafted in Italy apparantly0 -
I need to talk to some people about upping the mileage actually. I'm not sure how to go about it but is this the best place to chat or is there an article already in existence. I don't want to push it too much (last night had really sore knees and so didn't ride today at all) but at same time, don't want to stagnate. :?0
-
HI and welcome to the club Miss Assister.
How hard/far to push it is a difficult one to answer because everyone is different in terms of starting point, goals and has their own history of medical issues to take into consideration.
In general, muscle ache you can work through but joint ache you need to be careful with. Bad knees can be a symptom of not haviing your saddle set correctly so I'd check that (see the fat club faq - linked in op of this thread). Otherwise experiment with supplements like fish oil, glucosamine, chondroitin.
Experiment with different types of rides, like a 20 mile loop midweek and a 30 mile ride including lunch on a full day out at the weekend.
Then try hilly 20-30 miles
Then jump to a flat 50 mile ride.
Thats what I did anyway.
If you have a history of knee problems then its best to concentrate on adjusting your cadence so your legs spin faster and you put less pressure on the pedals. Focus on gradually building up your strength in your legs and the muscles surrounding and supporting your knees with increasing distance and minimal exposure to hills.
Be sure to include an easy week every month or so as your body does need rest periods.
Aiming to do 100-150miles a week within the first 3 months of starting is a good goal if you were a couch to start.0 -
Hello
Not sure what kind of ache this was to be honest. The only way to relieve it was by lifting my kneecaps off my knees (digging finger tips in behind kneecap and moving them about) and painkillers. It was pretty agonising for a while in bed. I warm up and cool down as a strict rule (I was also a runner so know to my pain the effects of not..). Today they are fine except for a little ache. Now I did adjust my saddle the previous night as I'd apparently been riding way too low (I thought I had - it was muder sometimes) - following the 109% rule, with a 77cm inside leg I adjusted from centre of pedal axle bit to top of seat to 84cm. Also adjusted seat (front/back) so that when pedal was in full forward position and my foot on it, the imaginary plumb line hung from the bump below knee straight through ball of foot and centre of pedal. I hope thats right! Maybe its just my knees adjusting to new position? I take glucosamine and chrondrotin (as well as a few others) though thats only been two/three weeks as well.
I'm going to take your advice and go long and avoid too many hills (though as I live in Deeside, Scotland, that might be a bit of a problem ). I don't want to bugger myself up from being too keen too quick.
Thanks and thanks for bearing with this questioning newbie :roll:0 -

Hi All
Well I have still not sorted my bike. Thinking of taking it in to a LBS for them to sort it. I did go to Disneyland Paris last week and did huge amounts of walking. The problem being to eat cheapyly it tends to be junk food so I think that counteracted the walking. I am still 15 stone 4 but happy I did not put a single lb on.
Not got the motivation of my lovely new man as that is over but to be honest I want this so much for me and my daughter that I will do this anyhow. I will be yummy mummy material.
Will post when I weigh myself next.

Budge up to make room for a not so little one.
38 year old, 6 footer, 22st 10lbs and sick of being over weight.
I have gone from a very fit and active soldier to a couch potatoe. Half a dozen botched operations in a two week period didn't help over 4 years ago which left me unfit and with lost confidence. I have done some exercise otherwise I would be looking at over 25 stone by now but nothing regular or with any kind of commitment. I got a new bike back in 2007 and got bitten by the cycling bug but work loads and fair weather riding partners the bike was converted to a turbo trainer which gets boring very quickly.
The bike was all cleaned up and serviced this week ready for a trip along the Leeds/Liverpool canal up to Five Rise Locks and back a total of just short of 40 miles. A ride I used to enjoy but this time it was painful experience of arse pain (blistered and swollen) and agonising cramps to contend with for at least half the distance. I came on the site for cramp prevention advice and came across this excellent thread, well done to all just for posting on here even better for doing something about getting rid of the flab. Cheshley congratulations on your baby and keep up the good work for your boy.
I'm available for most weekends and would welcome some additional riding partners around the Yorkshire area anyone up for a blast PM me and I'll look forward to meeting up with you.

Well done to everyone
Well, I've been on the go for a month now. Riding two or three times a week and I've had two weeks off work where I renovated my bathroom so I'll have lost a few pounds there lugging cast iron baths around etc. My new total this morning was 236ib or 16.8 stone so I've lost an entire stone in about a month. I'm made up!
My rides are generally 8 - 13 off road miles but I have done a 25miler which took in a local hill called clay bank and quite a lot of fire trails. I was knackered at the end but what a sense of achievement. Most of all, I absolutely love being out on my bike!
Just getting ready for another trip out over the moors this morning. Best advice I can give to anyone that's just starting to ride is 'Get the right equipment!'. Padded shorts and a decent set of gloves/mitts are an absolute must
Cheers

Well done all & welcome to the club Craig.
Its good reading how everyones still going well.
I've not got such great news...Not been on the bike for a month or so now. Docs even banned me from it. Think I've found a way around it ... just need to get a bit better first.
Good news is that I've not been eating junk food like I used to so I havent put on any weight - tho' stangely despite lowish cals (1600 avg) I havent lost anything either. So for me its purely down to exercise.0 -
Well, I am now down another 4 pounds and so chuffed. I am actually now up to over a stone losses in total from when I started. I saved all my sins from the SW plan to have a crazy girls nite out last night. Note to self, next time I will give the apple VKs a miss. You can not even taste the vodka in them. I also experienced having a sore head with a 4 year old shrieking a lot for the first time. I am experimenting a lot with new healthy meals and my daughter gets involved with the non hot parts and we have a whale of a time.
Going out tomorrow probably to Ashridge on my bike. I am saving up for a better bike tho as its very basic. Also want to get a trailer ??? for my little girl as shes only on a bike with stabilisers herself and I like doing as much as possible with her.
I have have met a fairly local new bloke (not the original one unfortunately that didnt work out) who is wanting to support me with my weight loss by coming out cycling and walking at least once a week so happy days.
Well done to you all, it is brilliant motivation to come on here.

well last weekend i hadnt achieved what I was hoping for as there was minimal to no loss, unsurprising really as I did have a snack binge or two but still dissappointing.
this week I tried to get back into my routine of cutting down and eating better foods, i went on my bike from sunday - friday but only totaled roughly 95miles as i had to settle with the turbo trainer on tuesday/wednesday. but I managed to finally get under the 15st mark as I weighed in at 14st 13lbs. I should still make my target of 14st 7lbs by the 11th October but it's certainly getting harder to drop weight nowCrafted in Italy apparantly0 -
6lb off, cycled just over 80 miles and with no diet but didn't feel as hungry.
Cycle shorts under my regular baggy shorts are a god send after the first ride left me walking funny, just need to invest in some more. Went for the DHB ones as recommended by Briarquest.
Keep it up or should I say keep it off everyone.0
