well done mate, it's stories like this that really stick a boot up your backside lol

I've done my eight miles for the third time today, wind was a lot stronger than the first two times but I did it in the same time and without using the granny ring so I'm pretty happy with myself too! Don't know whether to do it every day as I have so far or just every other day.

The other thing is I'm getting really bad sore throats, I think it's from my mouth being so dry while riding (I do take a drink bottle but I'm a bit wobbly when I'm taking it out of its cage so I only dare get a drink on the quiet roads - I'm waiting for my hydration pack (free with a mag subscription) but it's going to be another month probably before it comes. Did anyone else get this when they first started?

    Cheers 8)

never suffered with a dry throat only realy wen its warm or once of the bike but drink alot of water now any way so it dont realy do it now.

    cheers for the cheers ppl.
  • @BFG - sweet - keep it up mate

@Hitby - anyone else get the hydration pack or the sore throat? If sore throat - well I used to get a very dry throat and always stopped to have a drink and drank about 1litre an hour. But as I kept at it I needed less to drink and never had any further probs with a dry throat. So try drinking more or go to the docs if its actual pain.

as for me ... The new saddle arrived today.... yeahhhh!
But my seatpost clamp broke yesterday..... booooh!
The metal teeth are basically gone and the seat suddenly went vertical on my ride yesterday!

I seem to be losing more £ than lb just now!

Invest in a Thompson Elite seatpost. A bit pricey but you'll never break it!!!!!

cheers mate - did see that on the reviews on this site and was tempted. But changed my mind to a V cheap race face offering on the basis that a) I half expect some idiot to nick the seatpost for a laugh at some point and b) I've got another £100-200 of parts that are due or past due replacing and am beginning to think i should just keep this bike ticking over and save up for a new better whole bike.

I use a Azonic Hot seat with Ti rails, took a while to get used to but is much better than the full kevlar flite Ti i had with 0% padding. Never seen the spoon but im going to have a look see now.
Wont be doing any riding for a while with 2 suspected wrist fractures (scaphoid) :( I've already done the scaphoid in my right wrist a few years back and now my gp suspects i have done it again along with the right one.
BMX parks aren't very forgiving if your a big lad and land horizontally lol.

As you know, I stopped cycling while the weather is bad and went to the gym. I have been trying out some of the classes.

Today I did 30 mins of the treadmill with an incline. When I input my details it said I had burnt 645 Cals

I then had 15 mins rest to cool down and went into a yoga class.

Yoga, should be called Indian Torture for stiff fat blokes :) Comedy moment, fat bloke sweating profusely in a Yoga class that is moving at a snails pace.

  • @Briar - lol @ the torture - going back for more?

Well the seatpost arrived along with a tub of waterproof grease and some HARIBO!!! :D

So the saddle is up, the bike has been thoroughly cleaned, WD40'd and oiled. The brakes retightened, gears re-indexed and now I'm ready to test ride it tomorrow.

Hoping to get as far as the lbs for a replacement brake cable and going to order a new chain as mine is a bit too long now.

I really didnt realise thered be so much upkeep to these bikes!

I've not posted for a while, but thought I better log in, my dieting hasn't been great but I've managed to maintain my weight so it's not all doom and gloom.
I've somehow this week though been talked into entering a local sprint triathlon 400m pool swim, 28k bike ride on road and finishing with a 6k run. I can do all the individual events without any real trouble so I guess it's just a case of fitting them together now. I'm quite competetive when I get going so I'm now getting nervous as to whether I can do it and I'd be gutted if I finished last. Stepping up my training from this week and there's six weeks till race day, hopefully my weight won't still be 20.5 stones then or I might struggle!!!!!!

    Hi,
Oh yes I did another Indian torture lesson yesterday. However seeing as the class is mostly populated by fit young ladies it gives me an incentive to contort into otherwise unimaginable positions for a 41 year old male :)

I am terrible with diets so I have started to use something called USN diet fuel. Its a powder you get in strawberry, chocolate or vanilla. I can highly reccomend the strawberry flavour.

If I mixed it as per instructions then you mix it wilth water and each shake is 170 cals.

However I mix it with 400mls of fully skimmed milk and it takes me to about 300 cals per shake.

I have one in the morning. I go train and have one in the afternoon. It has stuff in it that kills your appetite.

Then I have my usual fairly large evening meal. As I am at the gym most days and roughly burn 1000cals according to the machines. When I get on the scales on Monday I had better have lost some weight.

As I love weight training I have set myself the goal that I will not go into the weights section until I am 23st. Last Monday I was 24st 6lbs so I have a fair ammount of treadmill work to do.

    Now then gents,

ive been doing the same sort of thing for the last seven months so that i can be ready and looking better for my wedding at end of august. when i started i was just short of 18 stone and up till today i am now 16 stone 3lb. my target was 16st on the button and hopefully i will get there.

the only things i changed was the kebabs and beer intake and it seemed to drop off pretty quick along with hitting on average 100 mile a week on a mountain bike. i ride to work on a full susser and i also keep off road tyres on it just for more resistance (and pain lol).

i tried a couple of runs out with a local mountain bike club as i thought i was reasonable fit for my size and by god did i get a shock!!

it showed me no matter how big i was i was extremely out of shape and needed to carry on doing what i am and i will get my endurance up which will also burn off more calories and that means less fat on me!!!

    ITS HARD BUT FUN!

i love the fact on a sunny day people in hot stuffy cars or buses you can just ride past them in shorts and t-shirt without a care in the world!

    keep it up fella
  • Hi,
I got weighed this morning and I was 24st 1 lbs with 15.6% body fat.

    I have lost 5lbs this week :)

Hi Briarquest - How are you calculating your body fat? I've bought one of those Weightwatcher computerised scale things which tells me

    Current Weight
    17st 10

    Body Fat Weight
    5.8

    Body Fat %
    31.4

    Body Water %
    50.1

    BMI
    31.9

Assuming that it's correct then 15% body fat seems excellent for a bloke your size! Incidentally, I haven't lost any weight at all this week but it is my first week and I do feel fitter. I did 10 miles yesterday and could've carried on :)
  • Hi,
I am using some Salter bodyfat measuring scales. I suppose they are similar to what you have.

Dont worry about not losong any weight. I was exactly the same. In the first few weeks your thigh muscles build up and that sort of knocks any weight loss for six. Just go on your bodyfat measurement.

I need to make a note next time I am on there how much my fat weighs.

I don't think the fat measurement is accurate. I have got some hand held body fat sensors that put me much higher than that.

But bare in mind I am 6'7" and my personal ideal weight is 19st.

However I am just using it as a bench mark.

I increased my training routine today.

I got up, walked the dogs. Had a USN diet shake and went to the gym.

    I did

    5000 Metres rowing

I then had a bash at the gym challenge which is to see how quickly you can row 250m.
I did it is 44.5 secs which puts me 9th fastest in the gym.
The fastest time is 39 secs

I then did 15 mins cross trainer. Level15

    15 mins treadmill 8% gradient 3.5mph

15 mins cross trainer other direction. Level 15

15 mins treadmill mostly on 8% gradient 3.7mph building to 10% then 15% for the last 2 mins.

Finally I did 4 sets of 20 crunches and 3 sets of 10 leg raises.

    Now I am knackered!!!!!!!

However, I am interested to get back on the bike and see if my times have improved.

    @Briarquest

That is a pretty good workout dude, definately one worth adopting, is it your own or on instruction from the gym?
  • Hi,
the workout is my own concoction. I have built up the cross trainer and treadmill work during the last 2 weeks.

I decided this week to add another exercise so I have included the rower.

When I am comfortable doing all three then I will add the stair climber. I like tp ush myself really hard at the end of each exercise. Just like hill work really.

When I am 23st and can do weights then I will do 1hr weight and 1 hour cardio.

I am really enjoying the Yoga and it is highly reccomended. Very hard to do and I cant see myself having tantric sex anytime soon :) Well thats what the Mrs says.

  • Hello all !!

Bin reading through the 'FAT CLUB' forum and decided i would like to join. I think my name is a bit of a give away to the fact that i'm one of the larger blokes pounding the forests, tow paths, single track, streets etc on my bike. I'm what people call 'thick set, big built, carry the weight well' but it still comes down to the fact that i'm a bit of a chunky monkey and could do with losing a bit of timber. My bike has been redundant for 12 months but i've blown the cob webs off it and i'm making the effort to get out and about on it and i'm loving it.

    Start Weight: 19st 7 29/06/09
    Current Weight 18st 8 03/08/09

Don't have a target weight (suppose i should plan myself one to give me that extra incentive) would really like to see a couple of stone come off though.

BFG.....Like your style pal ! Quality idea to think up the fat club.
