  • Ive not posted for a while but ive lost 2 stone in the last 2.5 months witch im happy with although it seems to be slowing now.

My question is does anyone here in the upper reaches of weight ie 20stone + ride a full sus bike as i seem to be finding myself looking at them more and more theres nothing wrong with my current bike (Voodoo Bokor) but i find it a bit harsh on the downhill.

Should i stick to HT till i get a bit lighter or should i go full sus now ?

    Thanks

  • Hi,
I have had a bad couple of weeks and although I have not gained weight, I have not lost any even though diet wise I was quite bad.

I started my new routine this morning which is:

    30 mins cross trainer

    30 mins treadmill

Weights on legs, lots of reps and sets, to quite heavy. 550lbs leg press and 200lbs squats.

I will do the same cardio everytime I train, alternating the starting exercise.

However, tommorow it will be shoulders

    Day three, Back

    Day 4 Chest

    Day 5 arms

    Every session finished with abdominals.

Each muscle area to be worked very heavy and hard.

Days 6 and 7 are rest days.

  • Hi all

Well, I am still not back on my bike yet, gonna take it into my LBS for repair.

I have, however, lost 3lbs this week so am sooo happy.

I also joined my local gym on their gym, swim and classes membership. I have done 45 mins swimming, 30 mins dance mat and 45 mins aquafit this week and I am feeling so chuffed and can not get enough exercise. I feel very happy too, it has seemed to lift my low mood of late.

Tonight is ladies swim night. The fab thing is friends are coming with me to some of the sessions in support of what I am doing.

Well done all of you, Keep it up xxx

    ta daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    I'm back.

'The Boy' is 6 weeks old tomorrow and I have no idea where that time has gone. I'm also restricted as my laptop is away for repair so this is a flying visit to check in and say hi. I've read all the postings since I was last here and want to say welcome to the noobs and well done to everyone. I'm hoping to start getting out on the bike again and if things at home allow, join my local CTC club riders on a trip up to Langsett in a couple of weeks. I also have thge 36 mile event for the British Heart Foundation on 1st November so I really need to get out and get my legs moving again.

Keep up the good work and I hope to be back soon.

Rob - txt me, we'll do lunch

Craig - Thanks for your message, reading your post I would advise starting with something a little shorter than 40 miles and building up, setting your sights too high too soon will only result in the type of injuries you describe and that will keep you off the bike. Good fitting padded shorts are an absolute must too.

Hit me up if you fancy getting out sometime but I'm not sure how long it's going to be before I'm up for an excursion.

sorry, it had to be done.

Is anyone else here other than Ian?

I'm hoping to join my local CTC club riders on Sunday for a trip up to Langsett. Looking forward to it but as I've only been out once in over 2 months I'm thinking I'm gonna hurt on Monday

Still here, 11 lb off in total now but more important feeling a whole lot fitter. Last week went on a ride with one of the lads from the 5 Rise Lock ride and he couldn't believe the improvement and had to ask ME to slow the pace down a bit which felt good.
The padded shorts are a god send and can't recommend them enough to anyone else suffering in that area. A touch of slat in the water and bananas to snack on seem to keep the cramp away too.

Enjoy your ride at Langsett, hopefully not too painful
  • i've managed to achieve my primary goal 2 weeks earlier than the deadline I set
dropping from 16st 6lbs to 14st 7lbs in just under 3 months. I was struggling to find any loss recently so this week I just went further on my riders than ever before (on average) and managed 180 miles between sunday and friday and that has made the difference.

I'm now setting myself a new target of 13.7 over the winter and hopefully will be around the 13st mark in time for next seasons racing.

good luck to all of you, and keep at it, dont give in

Back in January 2007 I was pushing 22 stone, I managed to get down to 16.5 stone by Christmas 2008 but since then I have stayed at between 16-17 stone. I'm now really struggling to shift any more weight.

The doctor would like to see me down below 15 stone and i'd love to achieve that goal but its incredibly difficult now for some reason.

I ride XC every Wednesday and Sunday, between 10-15 miles each time. I play football once a week for an hour or so, and I try to walk for an hour on the evenings i'm not doing anything. I also watch what I eat, although I no longer follow the Weightwatchers plan as religiously as I used to.

My current goal is to get below 16 stone for Chrstmas 2009!

Have you tried doing fairly long runs at a fat burning pace Steelo? I'm not saying that it 'would' work for you, but it could be what kick starts your weigth loss again. With your football and XC rides you might be spending a lot more time doing aerobic training rather than fat burning. The walking that you're doing is probably burning fat off more than the footy and biking, but you may need to up it to some fairly low paced running.

I am currently trying to get back to the weight that i was as a smoker (12st or just under). I was 14st 10lbs about a month ago, i am now 13st 8lbs. I have cut a lot of bread out of my diet, but kept it at a sustainable level. The main change i have made is by putting 3 extra runs a week into my training schedule. I don't go mad, but it seems to be working for me. I run a fair bit anyway, but adding about 15 miles per week seems to be giving me the results that i'm after.
Forget your heart, it's your bank i wanna break, it's just yer money i'm after baby...

    OK here goes..

38 years old and 18st atm. Had a year of no exercise at all after dislocating my foot (putting it back on myself was fun!) and a spiral fracture of my tibula which is now sporting a plate and six pins (got some help for that bit :D).

Have recently bought an MTB and have a road bike coming in January 2010.

I aim to get below 16st as I've never been below 14st since my early 20's even when road training 35 miles a day. So with age I am being more realistic and target 16st. Once there if I think I can do more I will.

I work in an office so don't get much exercise through my work and having 2 young children also reduces the time available for training.

I've started to be more concious of my diet which is pretty good, but do like a glass of wine in the evenings so that has to be the easiest calorie adjustment to make.

Training in the evenings is difficult on the MTB so I will get a Turbo trainer when the road bike arrives.

So for now I am aiming to get out both Sat and Sundays every weekend and really begin to push the regime in the New Year when I have the facilities and evenings become lighter.

Overall I want to be able to join the several groups rides in North Wales, but for now will spend as much time as I can at Coed Llandegla work on my pace and wieght loss.

    :)

  • good work Damon - i'm 38 and in march was 18st 8lb. by changing my diet and using herbalife shakes, the gym once a week and getting back on my bike after a number of years i'm now down to 15st 9lb - want to be 15st by xmas which is my 'ideal' wieght but the clocks ticking........ to be honest ive found it gets easier as time goes on, and the results are now visible and people comment on the change which is a real boost.. the downside is that none of my old bike gear fits

  • so is biking better than the gym?
  • you need to do both to get the most out of any gain / loss you expect to make. however i know i would rather be out on the bike than spinning an excersise bike at the gym...... :)

Fat loss is 80% diet, 20% exercise. Nail down the nutrition and you're off to a flying start.

Weighing less will certianly help you ride faster, but I'd say more saddle time is the main thing you need to get faster on a bike.

Set your goals, work hard, you'll get it. Kick some ass fella.
  • grrr it is nigh impossible to loose weight at uni im now pushing 16st and im only 5ft 9
help me motivate myself to loose weight

  • Can I join the fat club too :D

Now bang on 17st or 108kg.

Now, while I've never been this heavy, the weight has been creeping up on me. It's been a case of "oooh another couple of pounds, that won't matter". Well, now they've all added up and most of my clothes are tight and my gut is very uncomfortable.

So as of 01/01/10 the diet and exercise regime starts.

Pre 23/8 I was doing about 30 miles a week on the bike and 7.5km in the pool. On that date I had a mishap and landed on my (still sore) ribs.

So, for the forthcoming year, the plan is 4000 miles on the bike, 325,000 metres in the pool, some running (no target to be set till April as I don't know if I can still run:D). These are theoretical numbers based on what I know I can do, but may not be able to due to not being able to get out in which case I have to do sit/press ups, squats/ star jumps/running on the spot etc.

And I'm going to start watching what I eat.

Wish me luck as I'm aiming to be 4 - 5 stone lighter come late summer.

    Simon
  • Please Sign me up :D

    I am 39yrs old 6ft 4", have just weighed myself 18 1/2 st

After reading all 36 pages you have given me a spur on to get fit for the summer, used to do a bit of swimming and ride a little ( Liverpool St to Soho ) was made redundant :( last March since then have done no exercise.
Weight wise have been as high as 19 1/2 stone and got myself done to 17 1/2 but since last March have been gaining weight every month.
Have just got my 2005 Kona Hoss out of the shed and will give it a clean up :D
So as of the New Year the exercise starts.
Hopefully 3 stone lighter by summer.

Join me up to the Fat Club!!!!

I'm 38, 39 next month and can't remember the last time I did any real exercise. I eat rubbish, drink too much and have a sedentary job. I'm 6' and 17 1/2 stone.

Well, I'm now in the market for a MTB, hope to have one by mid Feb (birthday). I also hope to have lost a stone by then due to diet change. After the first stone is off (the first always comes off quite quickly), I will then need some exercise and NO WAY can I go to a gym - far too boring for me. That's why I'm getting a MTB.

Budget is £750ish to go on easy cross country routes until I get a bit of fitness.

I live in the south cotswolds and friends of mine have bikes so I'm looking forward to this journey.

    Enjoy...

Same problem with me. As for the bike don't be worried by frame strength as any in that price range will take your weight so long as it's not some uber light XC machine. Try and pick a bike with air shocks instead of springs as you will probably have top swap the springs for firmer ones where as air just requires more pressure.

    FAT CLUB LIVES!!!!!!

I thought this thread had died a death but it seems to have picked up some new faces :)

After posting on his thread for a few months, finding a riding buddy and vowing to get out regularly, watch the diet and generally be good, I'm STILL 6ft 5ins and over 17 stone. The good intentions continue with plans for more of the same this year, more trips to the Peak District, an MTB skills course and (hopefully) trips to Llandegla and Glentress.

  • Hi guys,

I'm interested in joining this! Since i stopped riding and playing lots of rugby and I have found I have banged on a few extra pounds (a few is an understatement).

I have bought a bike in an aim to get myself fit and to set a good example for my kids and there mum.

I used to pride myself on my fitness and due to a few different things in my life the above as happened.

    I am currently 18 1/2 and looking to get back to the 15 1/2 / 16 stone i was.

I pick my bike up Monday / Tuesday and will be hoping to do around 12/14 hours of cycling a week with my commute to work and riding with friends on a weekend.

I look forward to following everybody else's progress to keep myself motivated.

  • 1st post for me guys..........................
Had some real medical hurdles to overcome in the last 4 years so its been up hill all the way, back then I was weighing 17st 3lb, one hurdle is never going to go away so its a lifetime battle to maintain some kind of fitness, and can also make it that much harder to achieve my goals..................
Start of 2009 I weighed in at 16st 5lb and my target before the end of the year was to get below 15st, thankfully I acheived my target before December where I weighed in at 14st 11lbs.
At the start of 2010, I weighed in at 15st 02lbs after a few indulgements over xmas  , my target for 2010 is to get below 14st, so this is where the hard work
    begins........
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool that to speak and remove all doubt
  • Application to join the fat club

Ok, I turned 30 last year, I have been starting to get back into riding a bit and I have gone from 17stone to 16lbs 6. I have not done any riding for about 3 weeks due to building up my onone inbred and I can't wait to get out there again. At 6'1" BMI says I should be under 14 stone but I have not been that weight since I was about 12 so my personal initial aim is to get under 15stone and take it from there.

Apart from the normal motivation of being overweight and wanting to feel better etc, I also have set a target of completing a 6 hour endurance rate at Catton Park in May (only complete it, not bothered about where I finish). I plan on doing it for charity to raise money for Addiction (A UK charity helping people who suffer from drug addictions) as my best mate died on New Years eve of an overdose and I had no idea he even had a problem. Hopefully that will keep kicking me up the arse to get out there and ride.

    Cheers

    Matt
