I have a jacket by Gore, I can't recall exactly which one but he may find that to get the length in the arms, he's going up sizes in the body in which case he'll look silly. Tell him to eat more pies and then the XXL jackets will fit all round1998 Marin Hawk Hill

lol - yep thats exactly the problem!
And talking of problem clothes my shorts (which dont have a belt) and my jeans (when I forget my belt) just fall off me now if I dont hold them up. So some evidence (other than the scales and my fitness levels) that something has changed since jumping back on the bike.
Oh and I lost 4.2lb this week probably because I've changed my training from trying to go faster to going further.0 -

I was toying with the idea of buying that frame and a complete second bike. Srip the parts off the other bike and add them to that frame. Then sell the unusued frame and bits that I did not use.
My thinking behind that is that it is cheaper to buy a complete bike than all the individual bits. Then when those bits ware out and I have more money to upgrade each part to the best I can afford to match the frame.

Personally I think that's a bit of a gamble. What's the chances of buying a bike with the bits you want and selling a frame on after?
I'd stick to finding something suitable from new or buying the frame and buying new parts for it.1998 Marin Hawk Hill

I toyed with idea of building up a new bike. I soon gave it up when my friend who runs the LBS informed me that I would get a hell of a lot more for my money if a bought a new bike, than if I assembled a bespoke one – This is one of my tight circle of proper friends, so I know that he’s not out for the sale! He also informed me to stay away from the 'entry level' models as the parts/mechs wear disproportionately.
I still fancy the idea of building my own though. Some exotica frame and then really nice XT and other bits (not carbon you understand, don’t trust it J)0 -
Hi,
that is the same as all the advice I get. Apparently because of the deals that the bike manufacturers get, it is cheaper to buy the complete bike.
However, if I bought that frame allready built up I would be looking at a £4000 bike.
On the other hand I could get the frame for £1400 which should last a lifetime and is exactly the right size and buy a Specialized or Gary Fisher 29er in a popular size frame and put all the bits and pieces onto it.
A Gary Fisher or Specialized frame would sell on Ebay.
But this search is wearing me down so much I am looking at giving the whole thing up and joining the gym for £300 for 14 months.

Briarquest wrote:On the other hand I could get the frame for £1400 which should last a lifetime
That doesnt really make sense to me because my frame despite having only been used for about 4-5 months in total and believing I was being careful, has a fair number of scratches and chips through the paint. I've also threaded the frame tring to get a bottle holder in place and there are scratches from the roof rack digging in probably through some harsh cornering. Reading these forums and about everyones crashes and my experience I just see it as a matter of time before all parts including the frame need replacing from regular wear and tear.
And personally, if I were to buy something really nice I'd be too terrified to have fun riding hard or too afraid of leaving it locked up outside a shop whilst I nip in to buy something.
So by all means, definitely get a frame that fits, but with all the use and abuse... is it really worth spending that much money?0 -

I've ridden the TPT from Worsbrough a couple of times, always got as far as Silkstone Common and turned back before it started getting hilly. Would be nice to have a go at making it all the way to Langsett tho
It goes through to Dunford, you have to turn off for Langsett. If your targeting Cut Edge, then this will be nothing as it's vertical and fistsize+ underneath. A true test to clear (I haven't! managed it yet)
Dude, if you fancy that ride up the TPT from Worsborough sometime (and don't mind some company), drop me a PM and I'll see if I can make myself available. Be warned though, I'm slow when it comes to going uphill :oops:1998 Marin Hawk Hill

Just back from another 42mile ride.
this means that for the first time I have broken 100miles in a week.
Currently sitting at 110miles over 3 rides since sunday.
I think my previous best was about 60miles.
These longer rides are really taking their toll on my arse tho'
Its the only part of me thats keeping me back now... well other than the surplus several stone!0 -

good luck with it bfg.
@ cheshley - 2 hours to do the 21 miles to the coast, then I buy something at a delicatessen to eat (sandwich last time and mozzarella + spinach bake this time) and eat it by the shore for half an hour before heading back.
Now I'd bought the padded lycra and adjusted the seat and everything was so much better on the short 2 hour rides. But these longer rides have been a nightmare and the return leg takes so much longer - purely from the arse pain and I just cant sit in the seat for more than 30 seconds.
So not a happy chappy at the moment!0
