    good luck with it bfg.

@ cheshley - 2 hours to do the 21 miles to the coast, then I buy something at a delicatessen to eat (sandwich last time and mozzarella + spinach bake this time) and eat it by the shore for half an hour before heading back.

Now I'd bought the padded lycra and adjusted the seat and everything was so much better on the short 2 hour rides. But these longer rides have been a nightmare and the return leg takes so much longer - purely from the ars* pain and I just cant sit in the seat for more than 30 seconds.

So not a happy chappy at the moment!

Stick at it mate, takes a while for your sit-bones to get used to being sat on for that length of time.

  • yep.
Just did a little - but hilly - seven miler today. Managed to get up a particular hill 2 gears higher than last week so strength is improving considerably.
Weird/frustrating thing is though that despite all the training I've been doing and nearly doubling my weekly mileage from 60 to 110, my weight has just been fluctuating for the last 3 weeks by 3-4lb around the 19stone 12 mark. The previously regular downwards progression has just ceased.
    Vexing to say the least!

  • Its just a stock bontranger thing that came with the trek. Am looking at saddles now.... bit offputting that it seems to be so random if one works for you or not. Pity theres no saddle hire service.

Bit gutting that your ride got rained out. I'm peeling now around the edges of where my sunglasses were!

I weigh 75kg, 6ft 1, and 20% BF. Now most people wouldn't look at me and think I'm large but getting myself down to 10% BF at the moment and going very well.

Basically eating 6 meals per day all based round protein adding in carbs first thing in the morning and each side of a workout. Post workout is a protein shake with simple sugars (easy to swallow) aside from that its lean meat, vegetables, and log GI carbs i.e. brown pasta/ wholemeal bread. Couple that with training 5/6 times per week and I'm in a deficit of about 1000calories per day (I know, I know...). Also throwing in some weights and seeing some big changes after one week. Not just in belly size but energy levels, concentration, and hunger pangs (or lack thereof).

I know the science behind it all but cool to see it in action!

I emailed Steve at Chasing Trails in April about me and a couple of mates doing a skills course at Dalby with him.

Seems a top bloke (he posts on this forum regularly) but nothing came from it for one reason or another. Would still like to do it but I'd do it as a one-day course as I'm within driving distance. Baby due in 3 weeks tho, so whether I get to it this year is another thing....

    Hello to all here.
You have a new member if i become accepted.

My name is Leland and i started cycling (properly) on saturday after a long break and i am loving it. I go to the gym frequently as i like to lift weights, and after every session would always just onto the bikes and spin for an hour. So on Saturday after loosing a couple of stone i decided to jump on my bike and cycle into town (8.5 miles). I managed it (in an hour  ) but i was slightly gutted with the time it took me, as when i was fitter i did the exact same route in 35mins.

Only thing that is bothering me about the cycling is the saddle. I had a competition on Sunday so when i got home (late) i jumped on my exercise bike and did half an hour, and yesterday i jumped on the proper bike and went for a 5 mile ride. Only problem is today i went out for a ride, only got half a mile and had to turn back due to not managing to sit on the saddle. Just wondered what some of you guys may be using?

Hello mate welcome to the club, Sitting on your saddle is one of those things you just have to get used to i'm afraid, it's like the first time you lift weights at the gym, it's great to start but the day after you know about it, just keep trying and you will get used to it, although buying a new seat should be fairly high on your list too hehe.

  • Welcome to the club guys.

@Jojo - good luck in getting down to 10%
Sounds like you have yourself pretty sorted - although beware of how you calculate the deficit. Online calculators for required calories and for calories expended are highly innacurate. Then theres the ususal case of going too low will slow your metabolism. Best bet is to record everything in and expended on a daily basis along with weighing yourself so that you can see exactly what changes occur each week and why. Armed with that knowledge will you then be able to manipulate your diet and exercise sufficiently.

Personally I've recently been wondering why I hadnt been losing when my exercise had nearly doubled. The answer was that my diet had changed and calories had increased too high (despite being far lower than the calculators advised) and out of balance (too much carbs, too little protein). So careful monitoring and knowledge are critical.

    @Drummer - Leland
8.5 miles in an hour is pretty good going mate. My first ride was 18 miles in 3 hours and its taken me 2 months to get that ride down to 2 hours! As for the bum ache - check the fat club faq I've just put together. In fact I'm going to have to make another addition to it shortly for that section. But basically for short distances under 30-40 miles the advice there is fine. Above that - theres the increased possibility of chaffing - and thats alleviated by something like udderly smooth chamois cream.
  • TO ALL FAT CLUB MEMBERS

    Hi guys and gals,

I did that fat club faq as I said and bfg has posted it here...
    http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12636300

I wrote it up based on my own questions and those we've all posted and answered in this thread. So wthout trying to sound cheesy - big thanks to everyones contribution. :D

Now I imagine this will be a work in progress so any additions or alterations, just fire them off to me or bfg.

    Cheers!

Ok folks - hows everyone doing weightwise?

Well its 11:48pm. I've done a 20 mile ride in the peeing rain and despite the mud made a new pb and have eaten a total of 1295Cals today. Not sure how many calories in mud!

Now I'm getting the munchies...I have an apple in my hand or a chip shop, pizza shop and Kebab shop over the road... decisions... decisions.....

I think I know the right answer to this one.... But should i do 50:50 or phone a friend?
  • Cheshley

that depends on your thoughts on what the 'right' answer is...

morally right, or what you actually want to do?

    Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeebab sounds nice tho........

  • I think the last few years have been testament to doing what I want to do.
So I had the apple then made a cup of tea and a 1 slice of bread sandwich with loads of uber hot chillies.
Enough to get my taste buds tingling and a lot healthier than a donner.

Not good to eat so late... but what are you meant to do when starving late at night?
