Trains are shite between here and Selby, every couple of hours or so but it's do-able and only 15 minutes each way. Costs a bit tho, 2 singles cheaper than buying a return and £6.60 each way according to www.thetrainline.co.uk.
Every couple of hours is poor, I used to get a 10 min train ride when I first started the commute and it was £5 for a single FOR 10 MINS !!!!!!!!!!

Welcome gb155 and grats on what must be some amazing willpower (is that one word or two ?)
Anyway it seems alot of you are up north and then there is little ol me in the midlands/welsh border.
Whats the riding like up there ive only rode localy on our little hill called the Wrekin and thats becoming less of a challenge. :?0 -

As I said once before. I am as fat as a pig But for some perverse reason I love the burn of going up a hill.
P.S. Remind me not to do 27 miles the day after I do 31 miles. I am absolutely knackered and just did not feel in the groove today.
Ian0 -
Its not so much the burn that affects me on hills but the difficulty in breathing and needing to take a couple of mins to get my breath back. I guess I just need to work more on base fitness and put in the miles on the relative flat to get the breathing working right???

I think I would be a Gloucester Old Spot
I have yet to sample what it is like to hit hil after hill on a MTB.
What I have found is that if I put the distances in like the near 30 mile rides then the short intense ones seem like a doddle and as such I go faster.
I had 4 days off at the end of last week and felt really guilty. I just wanted to get some miles under my belt. I want to try and top the ammount of miles I have done for July. Hopefully I can get 50% more.
I keep thinking back to a couple of weeks ago when I drove the back raods from Easingwold to Helmsley past Rivelaux Abbey. That was one hell of a hilly area. I saw more than one cyclist pushing his bike up the hill.
I am not that familiar with the area and would worry about getting lost. I want a GPS system for my bike then I can push the boundaries on location.

Lots to comment on today chaps....
@Senator, Ladybower is where I base my Peak District riding. Running around the res is a good ride and surprisingly comes out at 15.5 miles. I have done this often as a benchmark route and timed myself. The routes that go off on the West side of the res are the challenging ones and link over towards Hope Valley, Mam Tor and Castleton. I'm not saying I can get up all of these hills but would be more than happy to have a day out. Always remember that a thigh and lung bursting climb is rewardes with a grin inducing downhill ) I also want to try the Cut Gate route from Langsett over to the top end of Derwent Valley.
@Ian, rest days are important mate, your muscles need time to recover and repair themselves, and by not allowing them the time to do this you are actually slowing your improvement. I vaguely know the area around Helmsley and over towards Thirsk and Sutton Bank. If you crave the burn of riding uphill I can think of no better place, however you don't need a GPS, you need a map costing about 8 quid and a sense of direction.
@timeslikethese - flat riding will improve your breathing and base fitness level but the increase in muscle power needed to get up even the slightest gradient needs much more oxygen intake. Slowly introduce into your routes some smaller hills and concentrate on breathing deeply and pedalling evenly, drop the gears so you're spinning at a rate you can maintain and you'll soon be looking for longer and steeper hills.
@glynnd111 - the riding up here is great. Around here (Doncaster/Selby) it's generally a little flat but there are hills if you know where to look. If you're willing to travel, the Peak District is not far and North Yorkshire is do-able. If you're riding MTB, have you considered a trip to Cannock Chase and the trails there? I'm not sure how far that is away from you...?
I think that just about covers it......

Not been on in a while, been busy at home and trying to get out riding- just got back from the Marin trail today actually... Rigid 29er round there is great fun and harder work than my Reign which, one is overkill for the Marin, and two gives me a better work out.
Weight down to 17st 10. Dunno what fat loss is, but I can see my quads are bigger and the same goes for my arms doing 50lb curls and bench press...
Happy with results so far0 -

Nope, not lost... lost cause maybe...
Did a ride in the Peak which included the mad Cavedale descent- managed to clear it, a fair few walked either part or all of it. somewhere in the region of 21 miles for the ride and some 'orrible climbs! Bike carrying at one point on the way up to Hollins cross from the outskirts of Hope.0 -
Cheers Cheshley - I'll give it a shot.
By the way just wanted to say the the advice given in this thread about getting the seat just right to avoid bum agony and numb groin was spot on.
Seat height and position along the horizontal axis sorted and a 1-2 degree upwards tilt fixed it for me.
I believe my problem was that I had been sitting too far forward so those sit bones were not actually on the pads properly. So be sure to play with the position before throwing money on seats.0 -

Not ridden Cavedale but I've heard it's a beast and the climb up to Hollins from that side is bad enough to walk up!!!! I'm hoping to get a day out around there soon but I'll be riding at MY pace....1998 Marin Hawk Hill

Hi,
yes, the price!!!! Beggers cannot be choosers. I am 6'7" and as such look like a drum on a pea.
I need a bike that can take my weight, size and also has a very long top tube so I am not scrunched up when I am on the bike.
Life aint much fun at this height, there is no such thing as a cheap deal.
On the subject of full susser. I was in a bike shop a few weeks ago anf they were telling me that to get the same level of spec in a full susser as you have in a hard tail you need to double the price.
They said it tends to be that nearly 50% of the value of a full susser is made up out of what is takes to get the rear suspension.
So they warned me off them unless I was prepaired to look at their 2k plus bikes to get the same discs, forks, gears etc which were on a hardtail at half the price.

I know mate, I'm only an inch or two shorter than you.
I'm doing the same with my full suss as I did with my original Marin HT, buy a bike that I like with a good strong frame and when bits break I upgrade them. The Marin only cost me £400 ten years ago and the only original part is the frame, it's cost me almost a grand to get it to where it is tho and that's not including the original cost of the bike1998 Marin Hawk Hill

Hi Briarquest, have you considered a GT Avalanche? I was riding one at 21+ stones and at 6'3" I found the 20 inch frame a little too big for me so perhaps the XL frame (22"?) would be worth looking at, it's a good bit cheaper than the Kona too at £549 on CRC http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=33983
Obviously you would be best trying out before buying but I reckon one of those would hold out and be a good option for you.0 -
