Seriously tho' I'm pretty sure we have talked about strong bikes like the kona Hoss being built for bigger chaps as well as bikes that arent supposed to be still taking our weights. We've also talked about seats and clothing for comfort and padding as and when the issues have arisen. So its all here within these pages... all thats been asked so far anyway... its just a matter of finding them without an index.
Maybe at some point down the line a Fat Club FAQ would be in order then!
brill idea chap maybe w can sit and sor one out between us one night and see if we can get it stickyed0 -

You dont have to do it mate. Its too easy to obsess over numbers. Some people have fun with that obsession and others get stressed by it. If you think you are of the latter then dont do it. Its not worth it.
If you want you can ask the nurse for a 1 word answer to - are you 26 stone or less. If yes then you are in with the rest of us and should have no problems and more importantly - NO EXCUSES!!! :P
It would probably be worthwhile contacting the manufacturer via email and asking them what the weight limit for your bike is. Never heard of a manufacturer specifying such - but it would be interesting to find out.0 -
Am glad that my modest input has sewn the seeds for a potential FAQ / Sticky for you guys!
Keep up the good work!
...if it's any consolation, it's arguably more difficult for me to gain a pound than it is for you guys to lose one (a bit like money! )

Just found this thread guys, mind if i join you?
Im Barry, 36 years old and just shy of 22 stone - been posting for a few week mainly in order to choose my new bike i collected a couple of days ago at 6'2 and very wide ive been told i should be 13 stone - yer that aint happening but with the aid of said bike im looking for 16 st then see how it goes.
motivation is my weak point or should i say will power / procrastination / excuses i suppose been in a rut for so long - what did you guys do to kick start things?

What kickstarted things for me? Well being so overwight 10 years off retirement age started to play on my mind. I dabbled with a gym 6 miles away but in truth couldn't be bothered trying to fit it in with my shifts (it wasn't a particularly good gym in any case) So I decided to get a bike again. First it was a Trek folder (because it's easier on the train) and enjoyed it so much (still do) I bought a new Specialized Langster off eBay for a knockdown price - and then a Boardman Comp mtb through the cycle2work scheme. I love all my bikes and I have most bases covered now. Added to that I now use a local gym that suits my needs better, and the weight is coming off. More importantly I feel a lot better in myself. There's so much to be said for having people commenting on how well you look. There is still a fair way to go yet but I haven't set too stiff a target so I don't get too miffed if the scales don't move for a while - they always do eventually. I could have carried on as I was in that I work odd hours and tended to binge drink on my days off and eat unhealthily. I still have the occasional night out but I keep a watch on my calorie intake, taking care to get as much good food inside me and avoiding as much junk as possible. Chocolate is pretty much out as are biscuits and cakes which were a staple for me. It isn't rocket science and I want to enjoy a good few years yet. I am trying to get fit enough now to do some charity rides so that others get the benefit, not just me. It gives me extra motivation if you like.Start Weight: 128 kilos (20.2 st) (April 17th 2009)
Current Weight:119 kilos (18.7 st) (June 18th 2009)
Target Weight: 92 kilos (14.5 st) (sometime mid-2010, hopefully sooner)0 -
Hi Barry, welcome to the club mate - and grats on the bike!
As to why we are doing things... I think everyones been through pretty similar things and had their little epiphanies along the way that have added up enough momentum together to finally get us to change direction to improve that aspect of ourselves.
Take your pick and mix from the likes of...
1 - a health scare or several making you realise you arent immortal any more.
2 - trying to walk/climb stairs and it sinking in what a mess you are.
3 - having been driving for 10-15 years you cant imagine not driving a 3 minute trip to the supermarket for some milk.
4 - trying and failing to keep up with your or a friends kids.
5 - stressing about the thought of not being around to see your kids grow up
6 - realising how bad you've become at sex and wanting to become a studmuffin/minx again.
7 - feelings of humiliation - particularly if the opposite sex are involved.
8 - seeing how bad you've become in a photo
9 - trying just the diet part without exercise or fundamentally changing your lifestyle and just ending up worse than before
10 - unable to keep up with your mates or not doing events with them that you know you wont be able to do and missing out on all the fun
11 - realising that time will pass no matter what you do so may as well make it a better you
So take your inspiration from this thread and realise that people in exactly the same place as you are getting up of their fat arses, ditching the excuses and doing something, and having an absolute blast getting high off the adrenaline rush doing it.
So jump into this thread, onto your bike and just do it.
If you start coming up with excuses, just shut yourself up and just get out on your bike.
Within half an hour you'll be laughing at yourself for being such an idiot in not wanting to go out.
So JUST DO IT!0 -

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Been out for a blast around the local woods this morning and my luck (or is at talent) finally ran out.
There's a nice flat section that's hard packed and well drained that you can run at speed, winding between the trees. Something has distracted me (probably a squirrel or something) and the next time I look up I'm heading straight towards a tree.
I'm ok (I think), sore shoulder at the minute, I'm sure I'll feel a lot worse tomorrow but my bike isn't. The front wheel isn't as round as it was before I went out and it feels like I've stuffed the hub.
SO, assuming the rim is OK, it's a hub and associated rebuild costs, otherwise it's a new front wheel and as I'm a firm believer in paying good money for good gear when I replace bits, it looks like I'll be on the road bike for a while.....
UPDATE: Just spoken to the bike shop, they say that if I've hit the rim hard enough to break the hub, the chances are the weld that joins the rim has been compromised, so it's a new front wheel. I'm off to raid the piggy bank1998 Marin Hawk Hill

that sounds like a heck of a whack if you've done the hub in.
In my youth I had a brake failure on my racer coming down a hill and ran into the back of a mate bending the front wheel by about 30 degrees. All it took was a trip to the bike shop to true the wheel.
Dont make em like they used to?0 -

When you say you think youve done the hub in - what makes you think that?
I'm just saying cause it may not be as bad as you think.
I've just had a problem with mine which is of the cone and cup variety. There was a grinding sound when the wheel tried to be turned and the axle moved laterally. typical symptoms of the ball bearings in the cone and cup socket going pear shaped. You do get sealed throw away units these days so you'd have to see if you've got one of those. Anyway, got the bike shop to have a look at it and it turns out the ball bearings were fine but I'd taken a chunk out the cone. So he replaced it, cleaned and greased it all up and built my bike up. And all for a fiver! Incredible value.
So a trip to your lbs could sort you out pretty quickly without the expensive replacement jobs.0 -
I appreciate your input but I've broken enough hubs over the last 10 years to know when it's time to spank the plastic and replace. It's always the original parts that break tho, I never replace like for like, I always upgrade to the best I can afford and I have never had to replace a second time. The only original part on my Marin HT is the frame and I've done all work myself (except the gears, I never got the hand of setting up the gears...) so I kinda know what's what.1998 Marin Hawk Hill

As challenges go, this is about as big as it gets and it's also on my list of things to do but with a baby due in under 6 weeks I doubt I'll be doing it any time soon.
As a starter, my research showed that the way to do it is from Lands End to John O'Groats as doing it the other way means you're riding into a headwind for most of the way.
Google 'LEJOG', many people who have done it have blogged about it and published their routes. My favourite route missed large chunks of urban Scotland by island hopping up the west coast, which sounds nice.
When I decide I'm fit enough to ride 100 miles a day for 2 weeks I'm going to do it as a sponsored event to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and instead if packing a tent (unless I have a small one in case of emergencies) I intend trying to get sponsorship from someone like Premier Inn (other hotels are available) and ask if they can give me a room in my stopover locations. I like a bed and a hot shower at the end of the day1998 Marin Hawk Hill
