U said that you moved so work is now 10 miles away is that just one way or there and back because 20 mile a day would be an impressive commute well for me anyway
i do this most days mate and belive me its alot easyer than ppl think. was hard at first but keep at it and you wll be fine0 -
Update form me.
weight aint realy changed much. to be honest i didnt expect it to as work has been real busy and i have been riding loads so the muscle is building up.
I completed the london to brighton on sunday in 5 hours. That was with a 45 min mechanical stop for a snapped chain and a loose hub. all ifxed in the end tho. I dont think 5 hours is bad for a 22 stone bloke. Cant wait till next year now wanna get to my target weight of about 18stone and do it again but this time faster. I was nto very sore but i did suffer with cramp in the last 4 miles.
realy need to start lookng at my diet now and loose some more wieght the london to brighton has gave me the bug to loose more.
welcome to all new members0 -
Well Done BFG!!!!!

Cycling has turned me into a PAIN SEEKING PERVERT!!!!
I just did a 23.66 mile route in 1hr 49 mins and 34 secs.
The really wierd thing is that I designed my route to take in all the hills I could find in the area. Even doing the same hill twice.
Should I seek counselling?

YES!!! lol, no mate i'm the same with sweat to be honest, it's satisfying the more sweat I lose........ok maybe I should get counselling0 -
hi bfg - glad you made your ride ok. Big Grats!
Well I've just made a posting elsewhere on the site and it looks like I may have destroyed my rear hub from some hard, fast, rough trail riding last night. Was it the weight that tipped it over the edge? Kind of glad I'm wrecking an old bike and saving the purchase of a new bike for a lighter me.
So no riding for me until I can get this fixed. Typical that it would have to happen in weather as sweet as this!!!0 -
Yeah, I saw that thread. Get it down the shop first thing tomorrow and you'll be up and running in no time1998 Marin Hawk Hill

Cheshley wrote:Now (respectfully) I know that I may not be the most unfit person here but picture the scene..... 2 years ago I decided that I needed to do something about my weight and fitness when I took the stairs to a meeting on the 4th floor at work and couldn't speak when I got there. 7 weeks later I completed a 36 mile sponsored off-road event run by the British Heart Foundation. (I would post the link but their website appears to be down )
I will be entering the same event again this year, it is on 1st November and starts at Sherwood Pines in North Nottinghamshire. If anyone wishes to use this event as a goal for this year, feel free to enter and join me. Please bear in mind that November may not be the best time of year to be out on a bike so you need to consider not just if you feel you'll be able to get up on 1st November and ride 36 miles, but if you can do it in (potentially) bad weather. Last time I did it, the weather was kind, not particularly warm but a bright and sunny day. I don't expect to be so lucky a second time.
Give it some thought. If you can't get to Sherwood Pines for this event, the BHF have lots of events through the year all over the country. I'm hoping to coincide a holiday next year with the 70 mile 'around the island' event on the Isle of Wight. There's nothing like knowing you have to get up on a certain date and ride, to get you out on those days when you don't really feel like it...
Totally agree with you mate. Definitely got to have your goals and better to set your sights high than in the gutters!
Unfortunately its my own personal battle I have to fight about how hard to push. I've dislocated both knees about 150 times over the years and I'm tired of the pain now and just dont want to end up in a wheelchair for the rest of my life.
So my goals are set to lose weight, get the screws removed from my legs, be healthy, be fit enough to do whatever I want (including being able to do special training for an event), and do it all without destroying my knees any further in the process. For me its all down to the level of knee pain that determines how much and how hard I can ride.
Its a fine line... too much or not enough and one that everyone will have to answer for themselves.0 -
Hi,
the only thing that gets to me about these charity bike rides is the reccomended ammount of sponsorship money.
So you pay between £25 and £50 to enter these rides and then they tell you that you should raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship.
This is sort of like a thing they run at my kids school where they do a sponsored walk but tell the kids if they do not raise a minimum ammount of sponsorship money they will be barred from going on the schools end of term trip.
I would enter quite a few of these rides if they were happy just to take the entry fee but it seems that unless you are prepaired to go out begging and pestering people for money then they view you as a second class citizen.
It looks like the kielder thing is being run as a business wher you pay your £50 and have done with it. That sort of suits me.
Sorry for moaning but when I give to charity I like to make the decision to do it. Not be forced.

For riders in Yorkshire I just found this link
http://www.mtb-routes.co.uk/northyorkmoors/
It has some really good routes on the right hand margin and can be downloaded to a Garmin.

I take your point mate, IIRC the 36 mile event I did 2 years ago and will be doing again in November didn't have a minimum sponsorship, just a £10 entry fee. Registration for this event hasn't opened on the website yet so I can't confirm if this is still the case1998 Marin Hawk Hill

Yeah, I've cleaned it all down and taking the back wheel in to have that spoke replaced tomorrow. I might even refit the spoke guard before I put it back on!!!

I'm quiet because I feel like I'm going to die in the fashoin of the infamous mr creosote.
Had a chinese tonight instead of going on a ride - since the bikes still buggered - and I just cant eat anywhere near as much as what I used to.
1/2 portion of boiled rice and some shredded chillie beef - peking style.... KABOOOM!!!!
Hopefully getting the bike fixed tomorrow so I can work it off!0 -
I am quiet because I want a Specialized 29er with 23 inch frame and there are none in the country.
Oh and I just ate a ginormous curry.

I'm still waiting to get to a weight where I don't kill my bike the first time I get on it. Got a sinking feeling that it might be next year before this happens.
Had to suffice with a 10 mile walk across country for my exercise. Trying to maintain about 35 miles walking a week.Starting Weight: 25 st 13.44 lbs - On: 20/05/09
Current Weight: 16 st 7 lbs - On: 10/11/12
Weight Loss: 9 st 6.44 lbs
Current BMR: 2095 Calories0 -
@cheshley - good on you mate - should have just done the same myself.
@SilverSenator - walkings a good start. Not sure what weight you are but theres quite a few of us bug giys here that havent destroyed our bikes with just some regular riding so it may be worth giving it a little shot to see how you get on.
@The Force that surrounds us, penetrates us and binds the galaxy together - please let me get some damn sleep for once! :twisted:0 -
Just wanted to say "WELL DONE" to all you guys (and girls?) on this thread!
I'm afraid that I am at the opposite end of the spectrum from you guys (built like a piece of fuse-wire), and so am cycling / eating more to GAIN WEIGHT, but mainly to get fitter after many years working in a office, so 'fraid I won't be allowed in your club.
...but just to say, well done & stick with it!
*thought* You could possibly share tips on strong bikes / components on the thread?Cycling weakly0 -
@skyd0g - cheers mate. Maybe you can join in the future....
Seriously tho' I'm pretty sure we have talked about strong bikes like the kona Hoss being built for bigger chaps as well as bikes that arent supposed to be still taking our weights. We've also talked about seats and clothing for comfort and padding as and when the issues have arisen. So its all here within these pages... all thats been asked so far anyway... its just a matter of finding them without an index.
Maybe at some point down the line a Fat Club FAQ would be in order then! :idea:0 -

Get out on it, you won't break it. I was 22 stone when I got my first bike (GT Avalanche) and 21 when I got the Cube. I've not broken anything due to my weight and not had any weight related issues with wheels.0
