it's about the only chance I get to creep up the list! mind you I could just count club and MTB rides and that would do more!

You should do... I think most of the top 20 would plummet if they could only log their (direct) commute. I would be only logging 30-35 miles a week if that was the case.

Don't say that. He'll be on the next flight home.

    Or coming home by pedalo

    do pedalo miles count?
Well as he did come up with this idea in the first place I'd be inclined to look favourably upon pedalo miles, if only to see him on the news halfway across the Tasmanian Sea.

If it was strictly commuting miles only I reckon I'd be in the top 5 easy.

Increasingly coming to the conclusion though that as I enjoy weekend rides more but usually too knackered - that I take two days off Monday to Friday, use public transport, and go for long rides at weekend instead.

In fact it's what I'm doing this week. Bad weather can f*** it up though. As can unexpected commitments.

I go to quite a few gigs.. I end up leaving work early and getting the train back into town, it's a pita just for the sake of a few extra miles... hmm actually 26 realistically.

I've cycled home from quite a few gigs over the years. The last time was a Fall gig in about 2005 - cycled from Kentish Town to Chislehurst at midnight, till about 2 in the morning, pis.sed, and half way home got really hungry, everything was shut, and my hangover started before I got home. And I had work the next day. Never again.

Don't try it.... we all know that's that little side road round the corner from Marble Arch. Always smells of KFC and tramp piss.

    Anyone for "hilly commutes"?

I'd suggest at least 500ft ascent in a day.

I would be quite high, but not at the top on that.

Would that be 500ft ascent total (easy, do that most days) or 500ft between start point and finish point (I'd have to go 20miles just to find a hill that high)?

Got to, really. La Marmotte is only five months away (sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!)

A break tomorrow night and Friday, me thinks, so I'm fresh for a short ride on the weekend. Then going to ramp it up a little more next week.

    According to Bikehike;

My everyday route into work is 8.7 with a measley 185 foot of climb.

My longer route that I'm trying to stick to for the way home according to Bikehike is 16.39 miles (16.25 on my computer) with 698 foot of climbing. Or for when I'm feeling brave the alternative route up Leckwith Hill is 16.35 with 792 foot.

If I do the short route (but take Leckwith Hill) I'll do 7.8 miles with 420 foot.

    Looks like I'm in!

Yeah I think we should have a commuting only mini league. Coz I don;t have much chance to do anything else at the moment

    Hmmm

Inspired by these tales of 'extended commutes' I decide to take a little detour on the way home. Up into the foothills of the Sperrins to be extact. Added an extra 9.5 mile to the journey but 1500 ft of climbing to a max of 820ft

Beautiful route and I'll be doing it again, but I will be waiting a week or 3 until I have about another half hour of daylight. The Bikehut Ultra Bright light wasn't quite as bright as Halfords would suggest and while the climbing was manageable the descending in the pitch black was a bit scary and I'm sure did a couple of miles with the brakes on as I could barely see the road surface.

Also, while it was great to be on relatively traffic free roads, drivers coming towards me with their lights on full beam meant I had to come to a stop as I couldn't see a thing.

This route will be my next stepping stone in March

As a kid doing cycle training at primary school would of hit the 500ft in one hit, at least on the way back as the village school was at the bottom and mouth of the valley my folks place was and is some half way up the side so some 550ft over 2 miles probably on some cheap kids single speed as well. seem to rember it taking a long time...

since I'm now london my commute is flat.
