A coming together of two cyclists, one wearing a helmet cam and one looking the wrong way on the wrong side of the road.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znzDL031Flo

Brake lever sized puncture to the left thigh that seperated the muscle and skin and grazes on right knee and elbow.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Out of curiousity, why did you filter past him?

If I'm going to make it through the lights in the next sequence, I don't bother filtering, I just take primary in the lane.

Because i usually do at those lights... and normally I'm away before the cars move... yes you could argue i should have stayed behind him, but equally he could have turned left behind me.. it would have cost him all of 2 seconds... actually I was already a couple of metres in front of him... Theres a big difference between being squished by a vehicle turning left because you are on its left and havent been seen and, knowing the bike is there in front of you, overtaking it deliberately in a dangerous manner...

You're making a big assumption that the driver gives a toss. I really don't see the need to pull ahead of him if you're going straight. If he was also going straight (which seems to be your assumption) he'd probably end up overtaking at some point. Some drivers are crazy nut jobs. What's the point putting yourself at risk unnecessarily?

I go on the premise that a small percentage of overtakes is going to be dodgy through incompetence or negligence. I try to limit the number of overtakes to lessen the chance of getting a bad one. One of the ways to do this is not to filter forward at lights (and you should never, ever be on the extreme left when you want to go straight).

Yeah, I'm not suggesting the driver was in the right or anything, it was a horrible maneouvre.

However, taking primary behind him wouldn't have cost you any time and it would have prevented the conflict from occurring in the first place. Especially since the driver's previous overtake clearly demonstrated they don't have any qualms about cutting up a cyclist.

At no point was the drivers in the right but to echo the comments above, he probably doesn't care and the best way to minimise the risk would to have sat behind his car in the primary, you never know what the person behind the wheel is like, are they doing their make up, on the phone etc. That way you'll never get left hooked and its one less car over taking you, if you can accelerate at the pace of traffic its a perfect way of taking full control.

& redvee, the guy was an idiot but did you not think to slow or shoulder check and move to the other side of the road. Not trying to place blame in any way what soever as its obvious whos at fault but it looked avoidable?
  • richrock
    richrock Posts: 77
@iPete - just an observation from watching it again - it did look avoidable, but at ~3secs the other guy weaves out into the middle of the road anyway and by the collision both are on the opposite side of the road, so it's just unavoidable. Redvee was starting to move out anyway to pass.

An unfortunate accident, one I've had with kids on BMX's who don't bother checking the road for any traffic.

Open notepad and type the following:

    [date]
    xx/xx/xxxx
    12:19:00

Save as TAG.txt into the root folder of the memory card. Can't remember if the month or day is the first figure, been so long since I played with mine.

and then this one (same day, leaving work... start the playback IN the work car park!)

how the hell did he think he was going to get past in time? or at all?????

Almost got squeezed between a lorry towing a trailer and a parked car at a pinch point (traffic island). I was doing around 27mph (yes it was downhill!) in a 30 limit when this lorry overtook me doing at least 40 - his wing mirror actually passed over my shoulder. And then when he eventually did brake at the bottom of the hill (as he went through amber traffic lights) there were no lights on the trailer (nor did it have a number plate).

I will post the video of the incident once I have worked out how to 'fuzzy' the company name, etc as I agreed to do so in return for the following apology:
Your Reference: Inconsiderate and Dangerous Driving WX1* ***

    Dear Mr *****,

Thank you for your email dated 11th May 2011 with reference to the above.

All potential incidents are taken extremely seriously by our company and as such we are treating your email with the upmost priority.

It is unacceptable that a member of our company has clearly shown no due consideration for the Highway Code and towing a trailer with no valid number plate or working lights.

These issues are in the process of being rectified immediately with our Transport Manager and the driver of the vehicle, both of which will be interviewed at depth as to why the driver showed no consideration to other road users whilst driving our company vehicle, and why our Transport Manager allowed a vehicle to go on the public highway without working lights and a valid number plate.

On completion of the above and following our own internal Disciplinary Proceedings a Written Warning will be issued to both driver and Transport Manager which will be kept on file for a period of six months during which period the driver of the vehicle will be closely monitored, and all our vehicles checked.

Our company would like to make an unconditional apology for any inconvenience this potential incident may have caused you and hope that with the above content your faith has somewhat been restored.

    Yours Sincerely

I just remembered that about a minute before that clip started we had a really considerate lorry driver and then a VERY near miss off another one. That really was one hell of a busy commute.

Oh, and we hit 30mph on the flat further on (Rob told me off)

and that girl? Best arse I've ever seen. Pippa can go swing as far as I'm concerned
