I'd still be passing on the right on that stretch, especially given the frequency of traffic in the other direction.

It is a 50mph limit and the traffic speed is very changeable. It's not always good to be stranded out in the middle of the road

To be fair, as a learner you're advised not to thank other drivers as it requires you to take your hand from the wheel. Not sure how it is looked upon in the test...

    +1

and she may have been very nervous. At that stage it takes everything just to keep the car pointed in the right direction, and that looked like a nasty junction.

I would give some thought to your road positioning, mate. Firstly, I would take primary when moving at the same speed as traffic. Secondly, much simpler and safer to filter on the right, then you're: 1. not relying on drivers to move over before you can pass and 2. not giving drivers the opportunity to squash you into the kerb, either accidentally or deliberately. 3. In traffic like this, driver's doors are much less likely to come flying open than passenger doors.

I know you're reluctant not to be "stranded" in the middle of the road when traffic speeds up, but in my experience this doesn't happen. A look over your left shoulder is enough to communicate to a following driver that you're tucking back in. Failing that, a strong hand signal will do the job.

Point taken, but I'm rarely at the same speed as the traffic, as it changes quite a lot on that stretch. It can go from 0-15mph (slower than me) to 25-30mph (faster than me) in a few yards. This unpredicatbility (to me) means being inside is safer. There are also 2 busy junctions on the right further back down the hill that preclude overtaking.

I agree but I don't have any hard rules on filtering, generally I would filter on the right and haven't been left stranded but there are times when I feel it is better to be on the left.
...There are also 2 busy junctions on the right further back down the hill that preclude overtaking.

Local knowledge should always advise adherence to hard rules.

  • Interesting opinion on is it legal to post footage & vehicle registration of just poor rather than criminal driving...
... the recording of the footage is fine, because it's generally intended for personal use. Only when one decides to make it public should there be consideration for the law.

Article 8 of the European Court of Human Rights ... gives every individual a right to a private and family life. A breach of this may give rise to a civil action and a claim for damages. Footage of vehicles may also be in breach of the Data Protection Act in certain circumstances.

... uploading footage of particular people, or vehicles which identify people, holding that person up to universal ridicule, could be deemed to be an invasion of their privacy.

... if every cyclist had the capacity to film live data of their surroundings every day, then a challenge on the basis of privacy laws and human rights may not be far off.

  • This lady (yes this happened in the SAME place as Mondeo man, different day) hates me. I don't know why, but if she sees a cyclist she deliberately blocks them. I've met her a few times - always at this stretch and I always have to overtake (and always do)

You're cycling up the inside of moving traffic !
Sorry, but it's pretty rich to complain about cars moving nearer the kerb.

I don't envy your commute one bit, but you should surely be able to get back into the traffic stream if it speeds up when you're overtaking ?
Probably as on my commute, after a while people will appreciate your care and let you back in.

I actually do not understand your post - are you saying I should not cycle up the inside of moving traffic?

As to not liking my commute - it's 10 miles of country lanes, hamlets and villages; then 2 miles of that bit you see there. I would think a lot of people would prefer the commute I do to theirs.

If I can. I'll stick up a speeded up version of the whole trip in so you can see how 'terrible' it is

  • I actually do not understand your post - are you saying I should not cycle up the inside of moving traffic?
    :

    Yep.

I learned my basic roadcraft as a motorcyclist so when I lost the engine, there were certain things I never did.

This included riding in the gutter - whatever the state of the traffic. Never in 23 years of cycling / 40,000 miles.

I also owned a van for a bit and the visibility on the inside was a nightmare. I used to routinely shout at cyclists trying to squeeze down the inside - albeit the particular place in question was between me and a wall.

I only filter on the outside of long queues on a regular basis because I have lights that are useful even during the daytime.

Here I am doing just that. :-

    cyclistontheinside.jpg

And that chap undertaking is perpetuating a bad precedent and means I have to ride even wider to anticipate the cars making room for him.

You can see my light reflected on the wing of that blue car.

It's called filtering (as opposed to undertaking) and is perfectly legal on a bike. Whilst I wouldn't recommend doing it at speed (and would advise caution when passing traffic that is just starting to move) it can be the only way to proceed past stationary/slow moving traffic on some roads.

  • I was a bit harsh in my comments here and on Youtube.

I'm lucky enough not to have to pass queuing cagers on that scale.

What it needs is a campaign to get some signage.. Painting an advisory cycle lane all the way along is probably OTT and certainly a waste of paint ..

That is quite interesting, and is exactly the issue I came up against with the BMW driver flagging my video for a breach of privacy.

Anyway, been a while since I posted here but caught a bus run a red last week:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msQc4AkAqyA

Emailed it to about four different TFL / TransDev / London Mayor addresses plus reported to roadSafe but no reply from any of the operators yet. Pretty poor.

Thats awfull driving from a so called professional driver, mind you equally awfull is the cyclists filtering between the buses esp the one indicating to pull in.
Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals! Except the weasel
  • Then several cyclists decided to compound it by squeezing through. - must be catching.
