The speed of the clip seems a little fast to me. Cars like that need a foot sozed dent in the door as a reminder that they share the roads with more vulnerable users.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

That was at least equally your fault. The driver wasn't exactly careful, but you were filtering too fast, and past an entrance that any one of at least 3 cars were able to turn into. Had the guy stayed in line, it was still quite a small gap to squeeze through.

I know that most cycle paths are worse than useless, but it strikes me as a slightly odd decision for you to prefer to squeeze between HGV's rather than use the one on your left.

Came close to being another HGV/Cyclist statistic today. In reality we weren't as close as it looks on the video but as I approached the on-slip where the lorry came from I could see problems forthcoming.

    Edit:
Have pointed DHL to the video and have made a complaint about the driving. TBH doubt if anything will get done or if it is they won't let me know :(

My initial thoughts.. the drivers may not see oncoming traffic because of the way the junction there is maintained.. secondly the HGV cab is MUCH higher so he should be able to see you. That is frankly shocking driving.

Did have it at the time of the incident in my head but forgot it. Should have stopped and put it into my phone etc. Surprise, surprise haven't heard back from the communication I sent DHL.

Dont hold your breath on DHL. Had a driver pull out of a side road on me years back nearly having me into the side of his cab. Brakes screach, I managed to stop and shout out that he was an idiot, he puts it in reverse back at me. I managed to slip into a side road and avoid his vehicle.

Like a toddler he begins having a proper tantrum, and banging his steering wheel and horn, shouting all kinds of abuse which was mostly muffled by his cab. I gave him a few comments about being blind and so on and rode off.

Tried to complain about it to DHL with all kinds of details (time, date, driver description and road) but kept getting the same message back (could I provide them with date, time, etc..) I had a feeling that they couldnt be bothered to read my complaint properly.

So my opinion is now of this - if you're involved in an incident with a DHL driver perhaps the Police should be the first port of call?

My phone rang just after dinnertime with a private number on the display and was a bit reluctant to answer it. Anyhow I did and it was Marie from DHL thanking me for the email etc before she read the coporate apology script.
Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention
We take these situations very seriously
The driver in question has been traced and will be dealt with accordingly

As she was saying her lines I was predicting them in my head.

Its why I often joke that we should bring back the law of satisfaction. Imagine a fat sweaty little driver being forced into a ring with a 14 stone ex-kickboxer who happens to ride in and out of work. yes, you endangered my life, now I shall endager yours.
  • I started a post on this in the MTB section, but figured this was actually the best place to put it. For all you helmet cam aficionados, Vholdr is having a Top 5 contest for Mountain Bikes.

    http://www.vholdr.com/video/top5-mtb-challenge

Giving away a bunch of free stuff, deadline is November 30th.

I'm sure a good amount of your posts would qualify/win.

I know that most cycle paths are worse than useless, but it strikes me as a slightly odd decision for you to prefer to squeeze between HGV's rather than use the one on your left.

    Several reasons:

1 - the surface of that cycle lane is appalling - tree roots, broken glass etc. The surface of the A4 through this section of Hounslow is excellent.

2 - the cycle path crosses a driveway approx every 20 yards with the risk of drivers pulling straight out in front of you.

3 - I generally don't filter that much at the lights, prefering to take primary in the LH lane of traffic, just happened to in this bit....

So I could ride a very stop-start 15 mph on the cycle path and risk being hit by people randomly pulling out of their drive or ride at 20+ mph on the public highway and be seen.

Not suggesting that its practicable to use one for a prolonged period - just to get past that congested multi-lane part.

How is the camera, by the way? What do you attach it to? (Thinking of buying one, y'see.)

Did that this morning in fact...

Camera is good. Mounts OK on helmet. I tried it on the arm strap I use for my iPod but there's far too much wobble on that plus it's at a funny angle. Only downside is that you do look like an alien with one sticking out of your head.

A quick 11 seconds of my SMIDSY last weekend. The driver didn't make eye contact as he sailed across me at the mini-roundabout and I was wearing a Castelli Trasparente too!

Apologies for the camera angle, but getting the bullet cam lined up right is something I am still working on and I got it wrong that time.

HQR2/HQ2 on the handlebar, no suspension.

There's also a clip of me falling and giving a pedestrian some abuse, but, with the benefit of replaying video footage I've seen the err of my ways :)

I've got the AEE version of the MD80 - via Ebay..... same as the Muvi for less than half the cost. Same camera.....

Here are a couple of late evening night shots....

A quick 13 seconds of an appalling overtake in a narrow spot by a taxi driver. I exited a mini roundabout in the Edinburgh Old Town and had to hug the gutter as the taxi squeezed between me and a traffic island on the bend. Fortunately the Armadillos survived all the glass in the gutter from the Friday night revellers. Mister WU51VRZ didn't even manage to get that far ahead of me before I caught up at some lights. He refused to make eye contact as I pulled up alongside, the lights changed and I was away before him as he had to turn across traffic.

Two videos of my new 5 mile commute to Lancaster University:

    To work (morning, daylight): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ojQm-FTV_Q

Home (evening, dark - with hot SMIDSY action at 1:30): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4ITcxkckYU

Both taken using my Muvi, but the daylight one was shot with it mounted to my helmet, so it's quite jerky. The night one was taken with the cam mounted to the headtube, so that's relatively smooth. Both are speeded up 8x (2.5 - 3 minutes), apart from my slow-motion SMIDSY moment. :D
