Bit of a catch-up from recent days.

Muppet of a bus driver indicates then pulls out when I'm a liitle too close for my liking. Looking at the Garmin telemetry the only thing rotating were the wheels.

Coming home from the pus pass ride in I found an all too common occurance these days, a student who uses his ears and not is eyes to cross the road. The road crossing lecture isn't until next week it would seem.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoPjfuoMlgg

Same stretch of road as the buss pull-out above, I came up behind a slow moving bus and it was just asking to be passed. Telemetry showed my poor legs pumping out 30mph+

I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • No 2 looks more like the common occurrence on Youtube of cyclists blaming pedestrians when they are the ones in the wrong

    Rule 170

Take extra care at junctions. You should

    * watch out for cyclists, motorcyclists, powered wheelchairs/mobility scooters and pedestrians as they are not always easy to see. Be aware that they may not have seen or heard you if you are approaching from behind
    * watch out for pedestrians crossing a road into which you are turning. If they have started to cross they have priority, so give way

Am I getting this rule wrong by thinking that if I were to walk out in front of a car that is turning left at 15 mph and I get knocked down then the car driver is at fault?

Anyhow, tonights footage shows I'm crap in the race to the red light. I lost again

Yep - you should give way to more vulnerable road users. The Highway Code is very clear on that. If you had already started to cross then the car must give way. Especially in the case in your vid when you are approaching from behind. And a car should not be turning right at 15 mph, that in my opinion is too fast.

Think this bus driver was late for his tea?

  • I really hate to ask this but there are WAY too many pages to trawl through....

    Recommended bike cam? (sorrysoryysorrysorry)

It's my next purchase as I am some roads where I need to consider my safety a lot more now... aaaand there's a hill where I intend to beat 50mph and I want to film it.
Chunky Cyclists need your love too! :-)

  • Okay, so not exactly the bike you think, and not exactly the work commute, but some helmet mounted fun, but still a fairly fun commute.... Cape Town's pass between Camps Bay and hout Bay in december.

I know a lot of people (myself included) have been using the Veho Muvi clones from Ebay.

At £12 delivered, they are certainly the right price. Add another £15 or so on top of that for a good class 6 micro SD card and the quality is not helf bad either. If you want to see what the footage is like from them, look at one of my videos (considering they've been compressed by youtube too)

Tested my new camera (same one as CWNT) with the middle section of my commute this morning:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BXnyghCPPo

I think I compressed the video a little too much as the quality is now shocking compared to original file, and since I mounted the camera on the handlebars; it's a little rough going too.

Had a comedy moment today on the way in. Slowing for a set of lights and my cateye fell off and stopped in the middle of the road to pick it up and proceeded to the gutter to sort it out. Then the Garmin fell off too and to make a hattrick I also fell off  Landed on the pavement on my back and got some dirt on my Gore jacket and got a cyclist tattoo on my calf. Chain oil is a bugger to remove unless you use the scouring side of a dish sponge.

The camera position tweaking a little, bring it a littlle more upright so you can see a little further ahead.

Thanks for the input, I have a whole new mount on my helmet (ooh er) for tomorrows commute, hoping it will be a better angle and less shakey :D

Well I tested the helmet mount out this morning and it seemed alot better (except for the terrible visibility due to fog) and I even caught my first SMIDSY on camera :D

A classic case blindly following a traffic light...
  • I got some more today too. Used a new mounting today, seat tube cam.

TBH, would probably give better footage with some skinny road forks rather than my mahoosive suspension forks, but you get the idea.

Loving the driver of the L200 at about 0:25 who decides to force his way through on the wrong side of the road.

Force his way through? How else was he supposed to get round that parked van. C'mon peeps, most of us on here drive so lets be sensible. Good footage btw.
  • Tbh, I'd have expected him to wait behind the parked van rather than moving into the opposite lane into oncoming traffic (even if it is only a fat cyclist). I'd have expected him to do the exact same thing had I been in the car or on the motorbike too.
I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong about that though  .

In fairness to the driver, the van parked up is illegally parked. (should be at least 10m from the junction) It is a narrow road, and even if you were on another form of vehicle he probably would have still done the same thing. Not having a pop, just an opinion.

While we are mentioning adherence to the Highway Code, I should say that I'm loving the cyclist from about 0.50 to 2.00 who decides to ride on the pavement & down stairs etc.

Can I use the fact that it's a closed shopping precinct in my defence?
No, thought not. *hangs head in shame*

I did get this one today though, and only minimal pavement riding too

Smidsy is not the word I'd use for that.

Best bit was, when I swore at her at the top of my voice, she actually took both hands off the wheel and raised them in a sort of "what's the problem" gesture.

    Nutter.
  • To me it seems she just plain ignored you, from a bit of personal experience too.

Loved the way the scooter cuts across in front of you, only to nearly get squashed by the bus.
