I flewby ABFG in Raynes Park this evening. I somehow knew it was him even though he was 200 metres ahead of me as i dropped down Pepys Road hill he crossed Worple road ahead of me but then went straight on as I headed under the train bridge and out to Grand Drive

Sorry to harp on about this but it was with a little bit of a chuckle that I realised today that I had recorded this momentous occasion on GoPro and here's the still grabbed from the footage.

Now I know this is a truly terrible pic showing very little. The only reason I am sharing it is to back up my original assertion that it was quite some feat to recognise ABFG from that distance. He is barely recognisable as a cyclist in this pic, just a yellow blur halfway between the bright white/yellow bollard in the centre of the pic and the three signposts outside the Shell garage. If I had any editing skills I would circle him on the pic.

I shall of course preserve this image and the footage it came from in our family history tin placed carefully under the marital bed so that one day I can tell my grandchildren that I was cycle commuting on the same road at almost the same time as the promuter known to all as ABFG.

    We salute you.

  • I am honoured and am impressed that I really am regarded as that illusive. Taking a look at my Strava feed you'd realise you could pretty much find me at the same point, at the same time each day. Maybe it was giving the bike a notional clean last weekend made me stand out.

Priory Lane this morning decended into chaos! the road is closed to deal with the burst pipe that I assume has been flooding the road. So what do the genius WVM and car drivers do???? thats right mount the pavement, drive down the cycle lane, inspite of a few of us cyclists being there and rejoin the road! Just when you think youve seen it all!!

Ended up chatting with a guy I see regulary on what I thought was an SS specialized. Very nice chap, turns out his is a dual speed, front hub brake, something like a rear coater brake self build. Got some speed about him too.

They were doing that on the way home last night. The blokes putting out the barriers had to stand in the path to block them.

I didn't see them doing it last night, but there did seem to be a large element of surprise that the road was closed and they had to turn around, despite the "Road Closed" signs pointing out the diversion that they had driven past.

Back on topic. I had to drop off my car in Kew this morning to get an emergency recall problem sorted out by the dealership, so I put the bike in the car and rode on from Kew.
This put me on my old pre-2012 commute, which was very interesting. It meant that by the time I got to those places where I first feel warm enough to do some work, I was seizing up almost immediately. Very pronounced. Helps explain these historical comments where some then-unknown SCR regulars noticed the effect of a longer commute allowing me to be fully warmed up: (I am the artist formerly known as Storck Guy)
[from 2014] Caught up with Ex-Storck guy around Chelsea Bridge, towing someone on a Specialized in the mid-high 20s. He's ... got a bit quicker since last year ...

  • Sadly if you told me road there was closed I'd fully expect people to try driving down the path.

Lovely ride in, kit choice was good a little competition without feeling the need to do more than stay on a gentle simmer and great to watch a couple with his and hers kit and deep sections show that bling bikes and a bit of pace is useless against common sense and defensive riding when dealing with CS7.

Queens ride is a well contested battle ground in. My experience!

People driving along the pavement again on Priory Lane. I tried to do my bit by putting all the cones and signs back that had been moved to one side. Anyone trying that stunt after I'd passed would have had to have got out of their car 4 times to move cones.....

I think I may have passed you at the time. I remember passing someone in a Wheelers jersey with their bike against the fence and trying to work out if they had a mechanical.

I couldn't believe the number of people ignoring the signs and driving right up to the barriers. I'm not quite sure what they expect to find.

Nice fast run in to Hammersmith behind a Paceline chap that I seem to run into from time to time.

Good work. Was the same when I went through this morning. There was a police car stationed there last night which tells you the scale of the problem. Wouldnt surprise me to find a couple of flattened cones later though!

I've clearly been away from London too long, i'd never have expected people to move the barriers then drive on the path, unless it was a WMV, all bets are off with them.

Yes, saw one car doing it this morning. Last night there was a police car sat there with blue lights flashing just to discourage people from doing it. Seems like a waste of resources really, when people could just not drive on the pavement when there are road closed signs everywhere.

  • Had to head home via the Wharf last night, felt goosed by the time I got home, maybe my pace to try and get there or the following CS3 and ending up in Poplar meaning I needed climb the stairs to the over pass did it for me.

It really is sh1t to get to, tons of lights on CS3, no directions when you need them, now I know Will Norman is inept and Iacobescu hates cyclists but is that really the best London can manage.

I think a much better solution would be to put a bollard (you'd only need one) in the middle of the pavement, on the line between the pedestrian and cycle lanes. Nice sturdy one, about 15" high, and painted black.

I can't abide by that CS3 really. Almost always go through the tunnel at Greenwich and head through New Cross, Peckham up to the Oval. Bit longer but I just prefer the open road to those narrow cycle lanes.

personally I find CS3 okay but i suppose after nine years I'm used to it.

Alternatives are Commercial Road via Aldgate or battling with the juggernauts on the dual carriageway that is ''The Highway'

Maybe it is the lack of familiarity on my part, but it just seems a bit cramped to me. Not much opportunity for overtaking and whatnot. The other options I may yet try. Cheers for that.

I don't mind it, and can always switch down to Wapping High Street to release my inner de Vlaenminck on the cobbles if I have time

It is cramped. It's essentially a bit of pavement that has had a two way cycle lane added on it. One just needs to wind back any thoughts of SCR on the Tower Bridge to Limehouse Link section and go with the flow. Use it as a warm down section in the morning or a warm up section in the evening.
