Have you tried taking daily "super high dose" Vitamin C tablets of say 1000mg?

Yes, so taking a mega dose is the right way to go as the amount your body needs spikes up considerably when fighting an infection etc, and anything surplus to requirements just flushes out of your system.

  • Brazil nuts (for the selenium content) are best for keeping the immune system up to speed. A handful a day in winter does the trick

Is there any proper evidence for any of these (double blind trials etc), or they just remedies that "everyone knows work" but for which no-one's been able to generate any clinical evidence (like Arnica for bruising)?
    Pannier, 120rpm.
  • A quick Google of "selenium immune system" will provide you with plenty of academic research.
I picked up on it a number of years ago when talking to folk who rowed at a high level. Apparently the only supplement recommended (to a balanced diet) was a handful of Brazil nuts in the winter as selenium intake tends to be depleted in the winter months.
My own anecdotes are that I rarely come down with office lurgies when I stick to it

I did that; plenty of data supporting the contribution of selenium (and many other elements and compounds) to a working immune system, but not much to suggest that selenium deficiency is a common problem.

As an analogy: We all know that iron is important for the production of red blood cells, but taking iron supplements isn't going to help most healthy people increase their blood's oxygen carrying capacity.

New Scientist fairly regularly has features on this, and its conclusion is that none of the received-wisdom supplements, including Vitamin C, makes any difference at all, except potentially to damage the kidneys. But there is one exception: Zinc, which has been shown to have an effect on certain viruses.

  • Nice quiet ride home which is what I was after. That's it for riding this year for me and I'm happy to be going into hibernation for abit.

Happy Christmas everyone, see you on the flip side!
  • Nice quick ride home which wasn't particularly what I was after, but fun all the same. Picked up a fastish roadie at Lewisham as sometimes happens. Twas all a bit congested on the run down to Catford so I hung back, then thought I'd lost him as he picked up the mother of all tows off an out-of-service bus heading back to Catford Garage. Luckily for me he got caught at the lights by Curry's which allowed me to get back on terms.

He slowed and clipped-in/unclipped a few times on the approach to Peter Pan lights - a ruse? Or a genuine issue? I wasn't hanging around to find out - eased past, the lights went green and I gave it beans all the way up to my turn off by McDonald's, half expecting him to come past again. He wasn't seen again so I'm claiming that as a win to round off the year.

Merry Christmas all, and a happy New Year!

Early commute home for me - half day.

Hate riding home in the afternoon. Leaving aside the sodding headwind which always seems to blight those commutes, the traffic seems to be made up of a lot more HGVs, flat bed trucks etc.

Wfh today, but back in work next week.

Clipped 8k miles for the year. Happy with that.

    Merry Christmas, all!

Last commute in of 2018. Perfect storm of epic tailwind, lightish traffic and some SCR with a guy on a blue & white trek meant that was my quickest trip up CS7 ever, let alone this year. Low 34 mins elapsed, and 31 mins moving time. Gold pots galore, and even a cup (minor placing only) for the full Colliers Wood to North Southwark bridge segment. If only I'd known, I'd have kept the gas at full all the way in.

Edit: oh, a bloke who I eased past on the upslope of Waterloo bridge came huffing and puffing back past me as I was rolling down to the lights, which was quite amusing - but thinking about it, I suppose he technically has my scalp. Balls.

Well, just think that at least that's better than him technically having your balls. Scalp!

  • I recall seeing some nutritional research out there showing that levels of selenium in a natural diet decline during winter months due to seasonal changes in diet and quality of produce.
Personally I quite like Brazil nuts regardless so researching it to the nth degree isn't high on my agenda! It's the only supplement/dietary change iI make and at worst it's a tasty snack and at best it could be of some help, take it or leave it.

Brazil nuts are also quite radioactive...

I mean 100g of brazil nuts is equal to about 100 BED (banana equivalent dose)!

    Motorpacing should be a DNF

Few years ago I was coming in Eastbound on the Embankment - nicely warmed up after my 40km from Woking - and caught a serious looking bloke on an S-Works Venge napping - timed my sprint to perfection - peeled off the wheel of the lithe whippet in front and smashed my fat arse past him with 200m to go to Vauxhall Bridge, only to have my moment of glory snatched from me as a drafting fairy came past me tucked in behind a wagon doing 40mph. Instant DQ IMO

Doesn’t matter if 20kmh or 40kmh, the fairies don’t discriminate as long as they stay sheltered.

Motorpacing totally a DQ event. Outrageous behaviour.

    Absolute red card for motorpacing.
  • I find it very worrying seeing people riding so close behind large vehicles traveling at speed, but that consideration aside, I have to admit it was a very successful bit of bus-drafting. He latched on as the bus was pulling away from lights and rode the draft a good three-quarters of a mile up the road, opening up a several hundred metre gap on me. That was his one chance though, when the red light got me back on terms I could see the effort of keeping up with the bus had taken it out of him even with the draft - and when I made my attack, it was game over. Well, either that or he turned off...

Stayed in the small ring all the way home. Big bag with a weeks clothes plus laptop, a hiplock, and that cross headwind meant a severe case of cba. Left early enough so no fairies.

    Happy Christmas all.

Clear roads this morning, so nice. Very few cyclists, too. Bliss.

Sub-50 minute commute for the first time, I think.
